USA GAF.. Explain please

Europe is racist as fuck. America by and large is very progressive on race. The only region holding more progress back is the south.

Even if Europe is racist as fuck, there are no segregated proms, such a concept would be dismissed the moment it is proposed. If that is due to Europe's fair share of history, I don't know, but that's how it is.

there are black comedians in movies and television shows (very popular ones) that put white makeup on their face and pretend to be a white person. fake accent and all.

why do they never get reprimanded?

Same reason a black musician saying the n-word is no big deal, but if a white entertainer says it then they just committed career suicide .

As a blackman from the south I can tell you're not from here. By far I've received more racism from West coast natives than any other region of people in the US.

lol, good one. On a serious note, I do like the refined, insidious racism of the well-to-do South. Instead of "fuckin naggers!", they're more like "I do find the coloreds rather unpleasant; surely you won't bring one to the estate?" That's my kind of racism baby.

Yeah, the South is rife with 18th century gentry these days.

highly doubt that. also, excluding THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD, ny state is pretty much the south. farther up north you go, dumber people seem to be

Aaaaaaaand fuck you, asshole.

the hell? what time period are you from?

this thread is just a cyclone of stereotypes. Sadly quite a few people on the coasts think like this. They immediately associate the south with hicks.

Europe, a continent so civil and advanced, it can't even comprehend historic racism.

Fascism, colonialism, Jewish ghettos, mass genocides--none of them ever happened in glorious, open-minded Europe.

Fuck you, too.

Speaking of MRE's, I just ate one a couple of days ago. Not too shabby honestly. Good work.

this thread is just a cyclone of stereotypes.

True.

Sadly quite a few people on the coasts think like this.

Nice use of a qualifier but still ironic. Also, I found the coasts to be open minded relative to the South. Lived in both. Born and raised in neither.

They immediately associate the south with hicks.

To be fair, I associate the North with hot dogs so...

I grew up in the South and now live in New York City. The people I know and things I hear in New York are far more racially charged than anything I heard in my youth; if anything, the South by and large suffers from kneejerk reactions against racisim. At least since I've been alive, the South has reflexively been gaining a more PC approach towards civil rights--and whoever said Southerners--an entire group of people--are idiots has some self-reflection due.

I love your avatar btw. No one said Sir Laurence was a racist. I'm just pointing out that exaggerated Vaudevillian/comedy blackface and dramatic acting blackface are both known as blackface. And. If you know the origin of both, they are actually both born of racism. Not that those doing the portrayals are racist.

Ah ok I understand now :)

It is a sign of being completely out of touch. You basically dress up as a stereotype and help reinforce it, and the only reason some Europeans don't see it, is that we have never felt the same need to deal with our slavery past, probably because Europeans largely send them to their colonies.

So yeah, Europeans are racist as fuck, how else can you explain the open rise of racist parties across Europe (often hiding under the guise of simply wanting to limit immigration.)

Because we, that is the whites, have a long history of horrific racial acts. It's seen as "fair". Now whether you think that's acceptable or not...

This is NeoGAF dude.

I gave up trying to understand US race relations a long time ago. Its just a big can of worms.

Because USA is a young country, they haven't matured enough yet to get past this issue.

There are younger countries with significantly less race problems. New Zealand, for example seems to be doing very well and has an incredibly multicultural mix.

EDIT: oh wait I forgot there is only North America and Europe.

EDIT: The denial of the extent of racism in European countries by Europeans is pretty humorous.
Nah man, the racism in europe is greatly exaggerated by media. It definitely exists but it's not like some americans believe. Here on GAF a black dude asked if it would be safe for him to visit some european country. haha, wtf man.

Also big difference between countries. Central/Eastern europe has a lot of racism towards Romani people though.

I've spend time with europeans, its not that exagerated. I'd heard absolutly crazy things about blacks and muslims. Its the same stuff. I've seen open racism all over europe. We also in the US don't have the BNP, New Dawn and Front National.

It's not about being "oversensitive". It's about the people that don't understand WHY it's offensive just being plain ole ignorant to the history of people that were stereotyped and mocked in that way.

http://black-face.com/

Next someone will ponder why they can't walk around in white sheets and white hoods without it being considered offensive and will call anyone offended by it "oversensitive"....

so what's the answer?
serious question

why is one race allowed to be as racist as they want, yet another cannot even speak one racist word?

it was part of the reparations act of 1983. Look it up and you can see all the terms and conditions that the whites in America have agreed to. restraint from blackface within comedic enterprises was one of the earlier terms agreed to since most people were tired of it by then. the most pressing issue was the ownership to the stereotype of who loves fried chicken and waffles, because fuck, who doesnt love fried chicken and waffles?

to be fair this particular thread was primed by the OP to be exactly that.

Well, not really, though it does seem to be US-gaf's defense mechanism. The OP never stated where he was from, so I don't know why there was this huge pile dive on specifically Europe. I'm not from Europe and I didn't know what black face was either until some thread about it a while ago. There are racists all over the world, everywhere. It seems odd to jump on one part of the world and say "at least we aren't as bad as them!". I would say everywhere is about as racist as anywhere else, its just expressed in different ways.

Because the world is only US and Europe right?

...

OP said:
These sort of opinions keep showing up, and i (euro) just don´t get it tbh. Why is this still such a hot and touchy subject there? We are all the same we start and live our lives, we do good, we do bad, color has nothing to do with it.... weird americano´s..

It's a troll thread.

So that just makes me wonder how big the black-white gap in the USA still is.

It was primed from the beginning.

Edit: welp beaten. Too slow on my phone.

There is no far right party here in Ireland and the BNP has been virtually wiped out at recent elections in the UK.

I realise that you've "spent time with Europeans", but you really shouldn't generalise. Same goes for the Europeans portraying Americans as backwards rednecks.

This. At the VERY least they have just as many racial tensions as the US.

Its just an annoying thing. Every time health care, racism or whatever is brought up its always "the USA needs to catch up to europe" its annoying and ignores the very real problems Europe has.

Europe is not the moral leader of the world as many of their citizens want to believe.

You guys are missing my point.

1. Europe is not the only other place in the world. Please, please stop saying this.
2. Everywhere in the world has racial issues. People tend to see them as worse than their own because they are expressed differently to the way people are racist back home. No. I would say no where is perfect. US has a very different history to a lot of other places, so I find it strange that comparisons are being made.
3. Other places having issues does not excuse your own.

There is no magical utopia. Especially when it comes to racism. Sure, it's easy to not have any racial issues if a nation is 99.999999% [Insert any ethnicity/race here]. But I think the US has definitely made substantial progress since the civil rights movement.

But taking offense to blackface isn't proof of our lack of progress on the issue. It's just a reality due to it REALLY terrible history.

Ok ireland is the bastion of enlightenment. Didn't know.

And everybody should just ignore the problems, we can't talk about countries having problems, we can't generalize, it offends people.

My point was to show europe isn't a place where people have "gotten over racism" it was to show that this USA=racism europe=progress is silly and just not true. I'm not trying to have a contest and I don't think the other americans are either. Its just to say "hey europeans, look at yourselves as well"

Nobody is saying any of this. The OP is clearly presenting this as a Europe v US issue. And nobody is excusing anything.

I was pre-law for three semestersin community college, and I've never heard of that act. I'm calling shenanigans.

1. No shit.
2. No shit.
3. No shit.

But people in the US generally being opposed to blackface portrayals is NOT a problem or an issue. But I mean, if people want to have a dialogue about it, I definitely welcome it. But I can't stand people that get pissy that certain people are being offended by blackface are just a bunch of mamby pamby whiners and then they have NO idea about the history of blackface in the US that made it offensive in the first place. Then back-peddle and say "Uh....so....so what?"

I don't disagree. I just hate it when euro-gaf decides to go on its little crusades about how progressive they are.

Weird thread. OP's post seems to imply his country is so far past racism that they don't even conceive of it, which I find hard to believe.

Semesterin isn't a real term of length within an educational institution, I'm calling bullocks on your calling of bullocks.
