Saw it finally tonight. I generally approach all stuff I want to see/play/read on a complete media blackout, so I'm glad I can visit the thread now. I have several thoughts, but beforehand know that I've never read comics at all, and I don't really give a shit about them. But I think superheroes kick ass and I want superpowers too. Thoughts:
1. Holy crap this film is absurd, whacky, over-the-top, ridiculous, forget suspension of disbelief, forget anything. This isn't a film, it's a ride. And it's awesome. Mostly.
2. Iron Man - RDJ steals absolutely every scene he's in and I still think he has the most compelling story of any of them.
3. Black Widow/ScarJo -- hot and pointless. I read back a few pages and someone pointed out the shame the her tricking Loki into revealing his plans with the Hulk were ultimately pointless. I share that disappointment. What did she do except get in the way of the Hulk, bring back Hawkeye, and catch a super scooter from outerspace and kill a few alien foot clan?
4. HawkEye -- excuse my suspension of disbelief, but bows and arrows? LOL. I know this makes me probably some caricature of a dumb no-comic average joe to you guys, but what a dumb superpower. On another note, Renner has turned in at least two disappointments in a row (this and MI:GP), unless I missed one. I like him, but...I can't put my finger on it.
5. Thor/Loki -- when this nonsense appeared, I just figured, fuck it, let's have fun. Hawkeye and Spy girl immediately made a lot more sense and I just kinda went with it. But let's pretend I'm going with it, I'm all suspendin' my disbelievin'. Every scene with Thor was utterly defenselessly terrible. Thor was probably a good film on its own. Does he talk like that all the time? And Loki's story is good, and the actor was probably under-utilized. But holy crap neither worked. When both were on screen it felt like a completely different film.
6. Hulk -- Ruffalo did such a fantastic job. I want to see him do a whole film based on his take of the character.
7. Fury -- SLJ wasted, but not his fault. He's entering this weird territory occupied previously by Christopher Walken where the actor is now bigger than any part he could possibly be squeezed into. I don't feel like SHIELD was explained well enough, but I'm pretty sure that's because of the implausibility of a floating mega fortress housing an inexhaustible source of energy/nuclear weapons would've been too hard to explain, gods and bows'n'arrow guys be damned.
8. What's the big deal with one of the characters getting killed I keep seeing everyone mention? Is that the guy with the nuclear gun "oh that's what it does"?
9. CA -- I'm convinced. I want to see that movie now.
10. The Aliens/Foot Clan/Sin from FFX -- fucking sweet. Dangerous but simple enough to kill to make this all plausible.
11. Who was that guy with the red face smiling after the initial credits, the one in space? Assuming he's some sweet new villain.
12. Overall, I had a lot of fun, and I really respect JW for pulling all this nonsense together. Now I want to go back and see Iron Man 2, Captain America, and Ruffalo Hulk needs to be made. I think it's important for non-comic guy to just go in with zero expectations and just have fun with it. I did. Pretty good action and some really sweet, over-the-top, eye-bleeding effects going on.
13. Did they ever explain how the air fortress thing stayed afloat after Iron Man only fixed one engine?
