Bonus Round: E3 2012 Preview [Up: Part 5: Thrid Parties Again]

Does SS really seem like a game Pac would be 'smiling' about? 'gamers' would be smiling, but dudes in suits would be more 'errr... this ain't mass market appeal'.

Are they saying anything interesting per chance?

Shane says we'll be pleasantly surprised by the launch line-up, both on the first-party and third-party side.

Pachter actually thinks the Wii U will do fine.

But he also says Nintendo is dead on the handheld side.

Are they saying anything interesting per chance?

Only 5 minutes in. They are arguing that the core audience should be important to Nintendo and that the name coupled with the fact that they had their focus on the controller could confuse the casual audience who was into the Wii. Also will the console get late ports from third party's or original content with new consoles from Sony/Microsoft coming up.

Not sure what he's saying about the 3DS? Why? The Wii U is a big questionmark, the 3DS a certified success, pretty much guaranteed to at least be buoyed by crazy Japanese sales, hardware and software-wise, with even less hardcore competition than the DS had. If it dies away in the west it's still competitive. What is he on here?

"Dead" is putting it strongly, but it's hard to argue against his reasoning. The casual market opened up with price-points Nintendo can't and doesn't want to compete in. It's going to be interesting to see how long the 3DS can keep outpacing the sales of the regular DS, both in terms of hardware and software.

Pachter, what on Earth made you think the five minute gamers bought the DS anyway? My parents play games on their iPads, but they never had a DS. My sister owned a DS before, she does play games on her iPad, but guess what, she bought a 3DS as well.

If Nintendo can deliver appealing software, there's no reason to believe that the people who owned DS's in the past wont get a 3DS in the future unless they have just exited the average age range.

You know it just needs pokemon.

Did I hear that right? 3DS is partially doomed because Sony's chipping away the hardcore in the handheld space?

I can vaguely see where he's coming from with the casual bit, even if I disagree, but claiming the Vita is helping kill the 3DS at the moment is unequivocal, bug-eyed lunacy.

Oh please...
People talk about the xperia play more often then the Vita. xD

Sure the 3DS won't hit NDS levels, but it is already doing better than the NDS was out of the gates and it hasn't had a revision yet. I think many people aren't falling for the bait and switch that Nintendo pulled last generation with the Lite, they are waiting for the revision and whatever enhancements that brings rather than being stuck with the original.

A revision + 2D Mario + Pokemon probably puts the 3DS at 75% of what the NDS did lifetime, assuming it has a similar lifespan. I'm sure Nintendo would be fine with that.

Pachter pretty much nails the 3DS situation, really. He's right saying they've essentially lost half the market to iOS etc.

Ha but sure but atleast 80 million, isnt that bad considering the DS is over 150. I think 80 million is around GBA levels.

They won't even hit 80 million at this rate. They're essentially selling handhelds in one market. One is indifferent and the other doesn't care.

I dont know but the amount 3DS seems to sell in each region seems to be quite balanced, It seems to be selling similar in each region. 3DS sold about 18 million.

Very odd views they've got on the 3DS.... it's making a lot of money, at least on the software side, why the hell would they not talk about it? For that matter, why would you ever not talk about a major product that you're supporting with a bunch of games?

Because that would mean admitting that they were wrong, and that would mean they would have to admit that the Vita is not effecting the 3DS at all. To much pride to swallow.

Nice argument.

My sister had a DS, now she uses iOS.

Pretty good episode.

However...there were two things Sess said that make zero sense to me:

1. He was confused if Wii U was a new console last year

2. Nintendo should downplay the 3DS in the conference because...it is confusing and will keep people from being interested/buying the WiiU

What? Who works in this industry and can't understand offerings on both a handheld and console? Or who in general?

The 3DS lost Nintendo money. It´s not a success until it earns Nintendo money.

Wut? Wrong. The 3DS sold in 2 weeks in Japan more than the whole month of NDP last month. It´s not even at all. Nintendo itself said that the 3DS is under-preforming in the west.

I really don't know what Pachter's thinking about when he talks about handhelds. He's not totally unreasonable when talking about the home console space, but he plainly has zero idea about handhelds; everything from his assertion that the 3DS was underpriced, to his assertion that Vita's stealing the 3DS's marketshare.

I'm going to be charitable and say it's not his speciality.

Yes its underperforming considering america has like 250 million people.

Did someone really suggest Wii U for $399?

Second half felt like it could have been a tad bit longer. But I think it would make sense if they did deemphasize their E3 showing on both handhelds + Wii U and only majorly focused on Wii U since that is coming. Speaking of which, Nintendo will have four different platforms to discuss.

That's not really what he is saying tho. He is saying that the dedicated gaming handheld market is shrinking, and will continue to shrink for the foreseeable future. It used to be a sizable market that they pretty much owned, but now its getting smaller and they are sharing it with Sony. It's not necessarily that Sony is going to beat them cold in the market, but they do shrink the space for Nintendo a bit. I don't see how anyone can think this is a wild claim from someone who knows nothing.

They addressed none of the topics that I wanted and asked the wrong questions. Obviously Nintendo has a lot to prove, but these predictions are nearly baseless. What we do know is that the 3DS has a great software lineup and is selling better than the DS while the WiiU is mostly an unknown.

I really hope the 3DS is a gigantic success now. XD

Oh please who is the handheld specialist then? You?

They shared with Sony last generation as well and did wonderfully. The "shrinking handheld market" could be attributed to a normal change in hardware. The market shrank when the DS came out. The market shrank when the GBA came out. The market was almost nonexistent when the GB came out. There are ways to create and grow a market, hardware just has to change. We still do not know how successful the 3DS will be, or the Vita for that matter.

We'll see almost nothing for Wii.
Very little for DS (Pokemon is about it).
In fact, they might not spend any more than a minute or two on the DS.
The rest of the time will be for 3DS and Wii U.
