WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

How credible is the longer rumor still? Any new news out? My and my friend have a bet going (longer screen vs diagonally bigger) and I'm not so sure the longer screen thing is still true
What you're asking is if it's 4" with a 3:2 ratio (like current) or 4" with a 16:9 ration (aka 'longer'). Things are pointing towards the latter
, unfortunately.
But nothing necessarily definitive yet.

Yes, exactly. I'm guessing the model part is still the most "credible" news?

Yeah, the iPod front frame is what sort of sealed it. We already knew it would be 'at least' 4", from all the credible sources, but not the ratio. Some detailed info 'leaked' so that's what the written basis is off of.

"hmmmm pic.twitter.com/RQANCEu4" This guy is teasing hard, lol. But yeah, the guy agrees with me. "I don't like it either, but 1136x640 is the screen size of the next iPhone".

He doesn't like any size increase for the iPhone since his response to "don't you think the screen should be a little wider too though?" is "no, that'd be worse. and it 100% will remain the same width."

how does the note do their stylus? Just a capacitive tip, or do they have something else that gives them more accuracy and less friction on the screen?

whatever happened to that WWDC keynote they had a few years ago where they talked about opening up the bluetooth/dock port for tons of accessories, and bought on healthcare professionals etc? Why isn't that method being used to support game controllers or styluseseses?

Why chronic knows as much as he does is far more interesting to me than these silly stylus rumors which are probably true but not in any way connected to this announcement.

I wasn't saying your suggestion was silly because it was infeasible, I just didn't see the benefit of substantially increasing PPI beyond iPhone 4/4S

Diminishing returns and all that

With that said I was just giving you a hard time

So that iLounge mockup was more or less accurate.

I think i'm going to be sick.

That shot is what I thought they'd do. Just eat up as much black frame as possible while slightly increasing overall size.

From what we can see, the part does follow a lot of the rumors and speculation. For instance, you can see the smaller dock connector at the bottom and it appears thinner overall. We’re told that the extra space on the bottom is used by Apple to enhance the speakers which will be louder and of a higher quality than the current iPhone. The supplier says the back plate is one piece anchored by an aluminium alloy (not liquidmetal).

Interestingly, the supplier also told iFixyouri that black and white wouldn’t be the only two colors this year. There were at least two other colors of back plate seen which obviously might not make it into production if these parts are indeed real.

Better Speaker? Good
New Dock Connector? Tell me why it's better than 30-pin
New colors? Seems like a bad idea operationally...way too many SKUs and at launch they are too rare

The big ass display touching the edges of the device looks bad, plus I'd imagine that I may register inputs from the sides of my hands holding the thing if they literally push to the edge like that.

I'm more nervous about this redesign than excited, I think.

That's the back of the phone, not the screen.

wow i want that.

Same. Though I'm wanting some slightly rounded edges.

I think the new dock connector is because they can only make it so thin with the existing one. They had to go to a smaller one eventually, now is the best time. As far as why it's better, it's reducing the overall size, probably creating more room in the internals for either more battery or other things.

I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of notification light in the next one. Done in an Apple way of course. Maybe just a small white light that fades in and out like the existing Macbooks.

I really doubt that's what it will end up looking but I would the idea of being more solid to grip. don't see any reason for it to not be one solid color though

.

magsafe power supply allowing for faster charging (especially when they add it to the next ipad), and safety release. Plus the mag means easier to locate for charging, and supports a nice drop in dock with no pressure needed to seat it.

Do people really like the Oreo look? I'd rather they make the back a solid piece of metal.

The problem with an all metal back is that it would cause problems with the cellular and Wi-Fi antennas. That's the reason for the black strip on the 3G/LTE versions of the iPad.

Oh, I forgot about that. I forgot the OG iPhone had a plastic strip too. I really don't like that, though. I thought the antenna going on the sides would solve that, but I guess not.

Maybe it's the GPS. I know the Transformer Prime went with an all unibody design and they shit the bed on the original design because the GPS is pretty much nonexistent without the dongle they introduced afterwards.

If that's it, it does look a little ...'cheap'.

That said, I thought the iPhone 4 in leaks looked a little prototype-y as well, but that thing is beautiful in person. SO industrial.

So if that IS it, the photos may not do it justice. I think the killer feature of the design will be thinness in that case.

I just want to remind you guys that when the iPhone 4 was revealed, GAF and the Internet at large considered it initially to be ugly, and a huge downgrade.

We were fools.

Edit: Ivedoneyourmom beat me.

Everyone hated the way the 4 looked too, "No way would apple ever..." I bet it will look better as a completed product when they show it off, so I am going to withhold judgement until then.
What? I don't remember "everyone" hating the iPhone 4 look. This is legitimately ugly.
