WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

Can we take Sentry out back and fucking shoot him already? The amount of faux outrage and buttfuckery is now beyond annoying. It's just stupid.
COME AT ME BRO.
I'm calm, just disappointed. you seem to be more angry than I. :p

And just to ride my point home a bit;

That back looks ugly as hell
I don't like how that looks :(
I'm not feeling the Double-Stuf Oreo look...
Bigger and no curved back?! Wtf?
I don't like the two tone look.
If that's it, it does look a little ...'cheap'.
Not a fan of that look, not very clean
Hmmm, this is giving me flashbacks of the Fat Nano.
It just looks off.
Yeah not a fan of the look.
:/
Oh god. It's like when Motorola decided to stop releasing good phones and released endless crap revisions of the RAZR. :(
Seems like a really lazy redesign IMO
I really hope this is not the final look of the next phone
man i hate that design, the back looks so fucking ugly.....

Pin connector had to change sooner or later. You would've either got upset now or you would've got upset later. It was quite inevitable.
Gogogo 30-pin adapter!

Too many great 3rd party products have been designed around the current adapter for them to simply abandon it entirely. There will be an adapter. I wouldn't be surprised if it came in the box, as I think it's just that important.

One thing I thought we all learned from the iPhone 4 was that replacement parts are a shitty lens to view a design through. There were a lot of people burned by "the breaks on the side casing are asymetric, app would NEVER do that". Even when the completely assembled lost phone was pictured people were reluctant to like it, but I would wager after actual good press shots, and getting the chance to see the device in person or *gasp* holding it in their hand it won over even some of the skeptics.

I may be hesitant on what I see, but I will wait for the actual reveal to pass judgement.

Yep. And if they do it right the adapter and phone will fit appropriately in most (non exact form fitting) docks

Edit: hoping this new connector is magnetic and symmetric.

Apple giving away 30pin adapters seems like a fantasy world.

I get the concept and reasoning, but Apple likes money...and I don't think a new connector is going to slow down sales of new devices enough or at all to warrant including something to bridge the gap.

People are acting as if the device doesn't come with the new connector wire in the first place. It'll be a non-issue in a year or two.

I doubt it'll be magnetic, but man would I kill for that. It's one of the coolest things about the MB line!

A 4" display iPhone *could* be an iPhone without any area around the screen and not impact the size of the device by much at all. A 4" edge to edge screen would add 1/8th of an inch to the size of an iPhone 4.

Theres no way the device ships with those discolored chins on the back. No way.

Wait what the front isn't different like that. At least not on the white 4S.

Sure it is. White band at top, black rectangle in the center, white band at bottom. Now the back of this future iPhone will simply be white band at top, metallic rectangle in the center, and white band at bottom. As long as the band height is the same on the back as they are on the front - and the narrow frame around the screen shrinks (like it looks it has), I don't think it will be weird at all.

Except that giant rectangle in the middle serves no functional purpose, like the screen on the front of a white iPhone does. You're blowing smoke, bro.

...That we know of. Maybe it will be used for better reception, maybe it will allow more components in a smaller space, etc. The aesthetically, asymmetrically placed, unpleasing black bands in the frame of the iPhone 4 served no purpose and were something Apple would never do in a million years - that was until Jobs got up on stage and told everyone that the frame was the antennae.

Regardless, saying "they already sell that way on the front" is purely semantical and doesn't justify a
n ugly
design one way or another, which was my point.

My point is that some might actually see this change as aesthetically pleasing because of the added symmetry by having the front and back match more. I think what people are seeing is more different than ugly, similar reactions were had when the parts of the 4 were being shown around. Maybe 2-tone is on its way back in style - it is actually still pretty popular with automobiles, I don't see why it couldn't work for phones.

...they're ditching the dock connector? The dock connector that unifies the entire iDevice ecosystem and is integral to millions of accessories with audio or video out? That's insane. What are they thinking?

I'm sure I'll grow to like it.

Obviously the bigger screen and new aspect ratio is interesting, but a bugger casig means a bigger battery to deal with mote power. That's a good thing.

Like a few have mentioned, do you think apple will do a vita with a took panel on the back?

Now I can't tell if you're pulling my chain or not. Can't wait to see what that two tone iPad 4 looks like! Or the new MacBooks! :lol

The gods can strike me if Apple ever makes such a mistake..

That the one version is black makes me think they changed to aluminum and the antennas are internal again, hence the windows on the back for reception.

You can't anodize steel right?

What use would a touch panel on the back be?
Not much really, possibly just scrolling. Maybe some new kid of gesture area? Yeah not really worth the effort. Not to mention if the pics are real, the machining on then inside would suggest no room for a touch panel.

Anyway, I think somethin that won't come across well in leaked photos is the quality of materials used. If this phone is ultra thin and rock solid in the hand, it could be really nice.

I didn't think that bare metal back looks good at all. When I first saw the pics, i just assumed there has to be another finishing process for that zone that hasn't been done yet.

It looks pretty bad with those colored stripes on top and bottom and the metal that extends all the way to the sides. Looks unfinished. Maybe if there was a border around it it might not look so bad. eh. I still think the final phone will have a better finish to this back plane.

It likely has integrated antennae like the 4 and 4S, you can see that they still have the 4 bands on the sides.

Yeah. I see the bands , but the black frame on one of them was trowing me off, looks like you can anodize steel but it is a different process and may not be as effective.

Edit: the middle back plate is the inductive charging surface
/troll not really :p

Looking at the 9to5 image showing the inside- anyone think they could have some sort of notification LEDs showing though the white section in the upper left? Not sure how that would be useful. But whatever. Speculation.

Nah, as much as I'd love that, it's probably just the usual proximity and light sensors.

Apparently that little slit is a secondary mic for noise cancelation, nothing more. And an oddly large flash? Who knows, maybe that flash has a dual purpose now, or actually functions as a flashlight (w/o JB).

Still find it weird that the flash would be further away from the camera, that can only do bad things to shadows in photos.

Thanks for letting me know you were just joking.

My thoughts on the leaked pics:

- Better quality/louder speaker is a very welcome change.
- Front facing camera being moved to the center (rather than being on the left) seems like a smart change as well.
- A smaller dock connector had to happen sometime, will be better in the long run.
- Headphone jack on the bottom is terrible, I absolutely hated that about the iPod touch. It's really unnatural.
- The back of the device looks hideous. Sure hope they're not going with the two-tone color idea.

Overall I'm not really thrilled with this design. Not going to skip it or anything but it's not getting me hyped just yet.

Since my phone will be in a case on day 1, I can't pretend I give a shit about how it looks on the back.

I'm fine with everything. Just give me a cheap 30-pin dock adapter.

Really kind of surprised at these leaks so early.

Huh? Flashes placed closer to the lens are worse than flashes placed further from the lens.

To a point, obviously. Just seems weird for them to put the mic right in between the two rather than to the right of the flash hole.
Flashes too close to the lens produce red eye. Lighting away from the lens is typically way more flattering, at least on large cameras. Not sure how the phenomenon scales to a mobile phone. Also are the little gashes even powerful enough to produce the kind of harsh shadowing seen in strobes?

On xmonkey's point, leaks are reasonably early. Will they be in the production chain now for October? Maybe it's going to he announce in June for release in July? Wiishful thinking since I'm still on my 3G. On that note, I'm not that find of the 3G design either. It was neat for a change but hardly what I call amazing.

they are pretty good though:

Yeah, for all their over exaggerating, I find myself agreeing with practically everything they criticize. When you read their critique of Siri, you can't help but wish that everything they listed as "why can't it do this?" can be done using it. Spot on about everything they said about Game Center as well. I hated that design with passion the moment I saw it. The very principle of associating games with some kind of casino gambling style look was repulsive to me.

It's worth remembering how much money Apple is asking for their new phones - it's not unreasonable to nitpick and expect things to be as close to perfect as possible when you pay so much for it.

While I don't think game center looks that bad, I have to admit that their skeuomorphic design choices is getting ridiculous and are going overboard.

In terms of leaks being early, Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac points out on Twitter that the antenna bands that showed up on the iPhone 4S were leaked 10 months before release.

I think leaks will keep coming earlier and earlier. The iPad 2 cases were leaked maybe a week or 2 before, and the new iPad case maybe a month or so before. And that's for a product that still sells about half as much as the iPhone.

I think the increasing volumes that Apple deals with each year means they need to start earlier, and make more, and the potential for leaks increases. Add to that that Apple's suppliers are now sharply limited in how much overtime the workers can work (fewer manhours available), and they'll probably need to start even earlier.

it doesnt look too bad. it's just sucks, that there probably wont be any design surprises by that time they will announce it. i know, i know.. "its just a prototype yadda yadda" but i'm sure there wont be any big changes. and if yes, i dont have a problem to eat a crow :D

Overtime restrictions aren't a production constraint. Foxconn will just hire even more people and add them to other shifts.

Production constraints for Apple are likely going to be supplier based, or just overall factory capacity.

Ok I take it back. Looking at hi-red images at 9to5, the device looks pretty gorgeous. Where I said cheap before, on cloe inspection you can tell it's going to feel premium again. Just the finish and materials make it great. If it's thinner then bonus!
