Who here is a DJ?

Cool thread!

I started messing around djing and doing the occasional party a couple years ago. Did everything on Mixmeister. Last year I picked up a Numark Mixdeck just to try my hand at Mixing live and just love it. I definitely thing the mixdeck is a great dj setup for beginners or if you're just planning on doing it as a hobby like myself.

I love your mix op! I am desperate to learn some basic scratching to add to my mixes. Any advice would great.

I have lived for over 10 years in squats where I was involved in organising parties and concerts and also deejayed a lot. Mainly Breakcore, Tekno, some old Detroit Techno (mostly Underground Resistance-related, Drexciya of course!!!), but also some hiphop. However, also a lot of hardcore punkshows where I deejayed punk and crustcore.

Most equipment I used was rented or provided by friends. If I deejayed breakcore I would use my Yamaha SU-10 as an effect pedal as well as a loop-tool in between tunes.
I have no idea how to deejay "properly" but still, I had a lot of fun. Haven't deejayed for a while now though :(

Who here is DJing NYE? How are you preparing? What tIme do you get on and how long are you playing?

I'm spinning NYE at my bar, first time doing such an event. It's going to be a pretty full house, they're doing a full dinner service with open bar and a champagne toast, the works. Get on at 10, and play until the bar closes (4, at the earliest). There are going to be two singers between 10 and 12, which seems awkward to me... I'd rather just get on at 12 and let the singers have their moments instead of having to start and stop between their sets.

Originally, I was just throwing all of my disco and house shit into one folder until I looked and had something like five days worth of music in it. I'm going to pare it down to probably about 300 tracks, going for a nice mix of disco, funk, classic and contemporary house, and a couple of dubstep/uk funky tracks thrown in here and there. I'm shooting for a very funky, high energy night. Going to start at 115BPM (I usually like to start with some really slinky tracks in the low 100s and build up) and carry it on throughout the night. I really couldn't be any more excited, I've got such a killer list of songs lined up.

I mix house/electro/dance/club and that sort.

I got this in my apartment and its the best thing ever for mixing. Love it.

I also have this sitting next to it, but hasn't got as much play lately.

For christmas a year ago I got a Hercules dj console thing, and I got Virtual DJ with it :D So I was just doing little mashups and stuff for fun, but nothing serious

Then I started doing tinychats with kitchenmotors and some other GAFfers, and we had the dance parties, where he'd just play music on shuffle, so I decided one weekend to try my hand at putting a mix together, and I did decently!

So I guess what I do is mixing :lol I'm never sure of the correct terminology, because I don't want to come off looking like an ass when the title doesn't really matter to me, I just really enjoy playing music in interesting ways for people, and I love finding songs that flow well together.

http://www.mixcloud.com/technicolors/ <- My mixcloud page. Not everything I have up there is good, but I think it's all pretty listenable. I mix mostly pop, electro, and some rock stuff.

I want to get more into mixing though, I'm just not exactly sure what exactly my goals should be or how to get there. I know I love mixing music, and to me, very few things beat the feeling of mixing one song perfectly into the next when you're just mixing on the fly.

I mixed a bunch for dance nights in TinyChat, and I did a weekly internet radio 'show' for a couple weekends over the summer, and I actually DJ'd my niece's birthday party, which was fun as hell. She asked me to DJ a school dance she's having. I'm not getting paid, but it should still be fun :)

DJing has become so much more fun now that it is reactive rather than planned.. I have my party tracks spread out in folders by BPM.. and I have my transition blends sprinkled through them.. This year I should be playing in venue of 1500 to 2000 people.. There are different stages so all the people won't be in one place all at once.. should be fun

But try to break you songs into different folders.. by BPM and maybe type it will make the nights much easier..

When did you start?
I started DJing, well fidgeting with Virtual DJ for quite some time in the summer of 2006. Eventually I got better at DJing and understanding how to beatmatch by hand, eventually playing stuff by ear, mainly because I knew a ton of DJ friends that spun similar music that I did, which leads me to answer the next question....

What sort of music do you spin?
I spin electro house music as well as some disco house from time to time. Stuff like Daft Punk, Justice, Soulwax, etc.

What equipment are you using?
I was once using a Numark Total Control hooked up to a DJ IO interface, but since that bit the dust, I've stuck with a mouse/keyboard combination with Virtual DJ. I manage to make this work because after years of using VDJ, I am familiar with all the shortcuts and stuff. Eventually I plan on buying the SCS.4DJ controller though.

Recently I started a series of 4 mixtapes titled "Chase The Night With You" with alternate song selections, kind of like "re-envisioning" them. From oldest to newest:

Lots of friends are professional DJs in the Ottawa/Montreal/Toronto scenes, I am not, but I do mix as a hobby. Started as a way to trigger my creative side to get back into producing. I made quite a few drum and bass tracks in the late 90s/early 00s.

I ended up taking to mixing so much that it took over my "creative play time" and now spend 10+ hours a week on it.

I mix drum and bass (mnml, neurofunk, halftime), dubstep (deep, brostep, pop), dub, drumstep, moombahton, grime, uk funky, garage, glitch hop, downtempo/lounge and recently old school reggae.

Apparently the last mix I posted was over a year ago, I'll upload a new one soon, been working on quite a few of them.

I use Traktor and a controller. I've had a couple cheap-o Numark ones and a VCI-100. Looking at upgrading to CDJs in 2012.

lol Milly -- I'm here!

When did you start?
Started in 2004 with BPM Studio Pro, I was like 16 so I didn't have much money for any equipment.

DJ name = DJ EPiK

What Sort of Music do you spin?
I spin mostly Hip Hop, R&B, 90's, Reggae, cruddy top 40 ... getting into the electro house

Also spin bollywood for those indian weddings

What equipment are you using?
2x Technics MK-II, Denon DN-250 2 channel mixer for home, Serato, Macbook

Also Numark NS7 for the mobile gigs

Post some links of your mixes

yeah I feel ya... I started doing stuff for GAF-hop just to fill my ipod up...Mixtape scene is huge in Japan tho..

When did you start?
Around 1996.(16-17 years old)
Not so active nowadays with day-job and shit.
More into "producing" now.

What sort of music do you spin?
Through the years Electro, House, Progressive, break-beats/big-beats, trance, chillout, psy

What equipment are you using?
Do not own any DJ gear at the moment though I'll happily spin whenever I get the chance.
Used to own a pair of Technics 1200s and an American DJ mixer (sold) and later American DJ CD decks. (also sold)
Mostly "spinning" on Pioneer decks/mixers now.

For production:
A PC (i5 760) running ORION PLATINUM (with a bunch of VSTs)
+ a NOVATION supernova II
+ a KORG MS2000
and everything connected on a Yamaha MG10/2 Mixer and a pair of Alesis M1 Active MK II monitors.

You can check some of my tracks on Soundcloud. (no DJ sets though)

Howdy, y'all. :) I'm thinking about making a new thread for this, but I don't know how well it would go over on GAF so I'm asking here!

On another forum I'm on, someone had a great idea of starting up a Mix Series.

What it would be is basically a weekly podcast of sorts, with a different (in this case) GAF-made mix every week, to showcase all the different DJs I'm sure we have here. It would also serve as a cool place to talk about new mixes and talk about shows and DJing in general.

I think it would be fun, and it'd be not too hard to organize. We'd just need a couple ground rules and we'd be all set. What do you guys think?

Also, I just picked up a Maschine a couple days ago. Thing is seriously rad. I am gonna make some wicked stuff over the summer. Hyped!

Doesn't the one and only Tiesto posts on GAF?

I hear he's into JRPGs :P

I'm not the real Tiesto (though you wouldn't believe how many people have PMed me asking me if I was!), just a long-time fan of EDM. But yes, I am big into RPGs, and I also DJ for fun, sharing some mixes online. Here is my latest one, a Detroit/Melodic Techno mix if you are interested. And here is a disco one that has gotten a ton of praise over the years...

I play progressive house, nu-disco, tech house, deep house, and occasionally electro and trance. Got my start since a former best friend of mine was very much into it. This was back in 1999-2000 or so... got my start playing 2-step garage, disco house, progressive and (mainly) trance. Then eventually started moving more towards deeper and funkier house styles... mainly played at friends' house parties or posting mixes to Tranceaddict and other EDM sites.

My biggest influences are Sasha and John Digweed. I do my best to do long, key-mixed blends and program my sets in a style typical of their legendary sets from times past.

Equipment-wise, I use a rather basic Numark MIDI controller and Virtual DJ software. It's nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done. If I ever started doing actual gigs, I'd buy better stuff... money is a bit tight since I bought and am renovating a townhouse now :P

Am looking at possibly doing a residency at a local bar on the island, but here everything is electro house and hard house, I'd be more interested in doing a deep house/disco thing or a 'free-for-all' where I would play various random electronic music like d&b, uk garage, psytrance, etc.

You don't need new equipment for gigging. Clubs should have installs. You're fine as long as you can beatmatch by ear.

That reminds me of the few (well, few too many) times I have gone to a place to play and noticed they don't have turntables or have cd players only goddamn I have been bummed. I guess it's naive to expect that the biggest rock clubs around here should have proper equipment. I only play 7"'s anyway and have learned to check before hand...
