Well Gaf, I have a confession to make. Something I've been hiding from MovieGAF for a long time now. But, I think now is as good as time as any to say it out loud.

*deep breath*

I don't like Blade Runner.

In fact, it took 3 separate sittings years apart to even watch it all the way through.

I'm sorry ;_;

edit: oh good, last post, hopefully nobody sees this

Too late.

HEY BROTHER

It has great atmosphere and amazing special effects, but it's a really boring and dull movie otherwise. I can see why people think it's a masterpiece, but I can just never get into it.

I think it's very good but for me,

Alien>(x10)Kingdom Of Heaven DC>(x3)Blade Runner>(x10)a bunch of stuff>(x5)a bunch of other stuff

Blade Runner didn't do a lot for me, but I probably need to give it another chance as it has been so long since I've seen it. I think I would probably love it now.

I'd probably go

1. Alien
2. Kingdom of Heaven DC
3. Gladiator
4. Blade Runner (the amazing craftsmanship makes it a top 5er for me)
5. Black Hawk Down

I really enjoyed American Gangster and Body of Lies as well.

It looks INCREDIBLE. It's one of the best-looking films I've ever seen. The Blu-Ray release makes it look absolutely peerless.

But it just leaves me so cold every time I tried to watch it. Sooooo boring.

That "tears in rain" speech is pretty awesome, though.

Gladiator, BHD, American Gangster and BoL are all in the first batch of stuff. Solid movies for sure, just nowhere near greats.

It's really odd how much acclaim Ridley Scott gets over such a long career for not even a handful of genuinely great movies though in my eyes. The ones that are are incredible but there really is a lot of average-to-dross.

You are so DEAD. DEAD, you hear me?

tbh though, I fell asleep on my 1st and 2nd viewing of Blade Runner. It's only after I played the Westwood game that I managed to see the 3rd viewing in its entirety. After that it's the subsequent viewings that made me appreciate the film.

i really like matchstick men

but yeah for the most part outside of alien and blade runner i could give a shit about most of his films

gladiator is ok

Blade Runner is meant to be boring, soothing, almost with the intent to put you into a trance like state where you absorb the world more than even the storyline. And I would argue that it's soothing atmosphere is a major part of why some people love it so dearly.
That's why Blade Runner is a good film. The quotes you can get out of the film are so great, and so astonishingly well timed with the atmosphere and music.

One thing however, that does bug me, is that I cannot stand Harrison Ford. At all.
I feel as though every presence of his somehow brings everything around it down. And indeed, his most tolerable moments are where he doesn't have any dialogue. Yet, despite all of this, Blade Runner is still great in terms of characters introduced. Mainly because literally everyone else was cast so perfectly for the film.

Favourite character was Dr.Tyrell himself. Absolutely amazing introduction and an amazing end for that character in Blade Runner.

Blade Runner is still his greatest work. Followed closely by Kingdom of Heaven, and third is comes Alien.

I am really happy Scott is going for a female protagonist in the next one. A female detective is a character type in short supply. And I would argue that job role(as portrayed in films at least) actually fits the fairer gender more so than the male gender.

I wouldn't use the term "boring". For one, it definitely didn't bore me. Totally different movie than what I expected, the first time I saw it. But that's what made it so interesting. If I had to use one word to describe Blade Runner, it would be "mesmerizing". I seriously love that movie

Damn, I feel like watching Blade Runner now.

Man, I saw Kingdom of Heaven in theaters and it was ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

This would have to be the greatest Theater-to-DC quality jump in history the way GAF hypes it up as one of Scott's best.

Kingdom of Heaven is widely known as one of the best Theatrical to Director's Cuts ever. This isn't just GAF hyperbole, it's a damn good movie. Just check it out.

It really did seem to me with American Gangster, Body of Lies, and Robin Hood, he was going through the motions. There is absolutely nothing technically wrong with them, nothing at all -- they just left my mind within 10 minutes of departing the theater.

I don't think we'll get it in the UK just yet.
I don't recall of a single instance where we received a trailer before the US.

Maybe the James Bond films, but I've never watched them in theatres.

Yeah, it's a loooong shot especially since it's a different distributor there and you get the film later then we do.

Hopefully TWC releases it online next week.

Just got done re-watching Alien on BluRay. Been a really long time since the last time I had seen it. My god, that film has not aged one bit. The BluRay transfer is out of this world good. It looks like it came out yesterday, and that is not hyperbole at all, it looks and sounds that good.

Man, what a film.

I adore the cinematography and vision in Kingdom of Heaven but I definitely don't put it above Blade Runner and Alien. But I put it above the rest of his efforts.

Eh I like Gladiator more than Kingdom of Heaven. The latter has better cinematography and actors but I think Gladiator is an awesome sports movie and Joaquin Phoenix hams it up great.

I agree with bj tho. Can't really care too much about Scott aside from Alien and Blade Runner.

Just got my IMAX tickets. I forgot how goddamn expensive they are. TWENTY THREE DOLLARS. Ugh. At least I only go to the movies 1-2 times per year anyway but still. At least it's for an R rated sci-fi film, if it's successful maybe Hollywood won't be such pussies in the future about similar movies.

Don't pay attention to those who.don't like the movie, the majority of reactions are positive.

I know I liked John Carter (is that really a problem?!), but Prometheus is a gem.

Not following your logic.

Well, it certainly seems like people here are starting to say "Oh, it's not as great as I thought it would be, according to reactions", which is pretty retarded. Critics have way too much importance today, when it really shouldn't matter. You're the judge, not someone else.

I just watched JC and while I didn't love it, nor would I call it very good, I did find it colorful and enjoyable. I liked some of the plot points, some of the action was very cool, and the score was amazing.

So I guess that my opinion about Prometheus won't matter unless I hate it.

And yet you argued that "the majority of reactions are positive"... So that matters?

I'd agree that people shouldn't judge the movie entirely based on strangers' reviews and impressions, but I see no reason for them to "not pay attention to those who don't like the movie" ("the majority disagrees" isn't that great an argument).

If anything, people should be encouraged to lower their expectations. That way if it's not orgasmic like they are hoping, they might still enjoy themselves.

Lowering expectations when they've been high as hell, how do you do that?! It is pretending then, you know your expectations were super high but then. you force your brain to think "ok tone down the excitement, this might not be as good as I thought it was going to be", curious as to how that works ^^

One more critic :
- It's beautiful. Avatar levels of beautiful (I saw avatar in 3D though, this one in 2D)
- Actors are great.
- Love Giger art.
- Also love the fact that they tried to make something "different".

but
- The "philosophical" part is poorly handled. The protagonists sound stupid. Reflexion has zero depth.
- The "Alien" part is anecdotal. You know most of it as long as you've watched the trailer.
- Rhythm is terrible. Exposition scenes are great. It gets really messy when it comes to the actual threat. It's like a puzzle no one will ever want to assemble.
- Left me unsatisfied. Few good moments.

I find it interesting that when everyone was under the impression that this would be the greatest thing since slice bread, many were reluctant to give Lindelof any of the writing credits, but now that the reviews are really mixed, with the main detraction points being what everyone was hoping would be awesome, the entire blame rests on Lindelof's shoulders.

I'm not a huge fan of the guy myself, but some of you are being a bit tough on him.

Going through the Rottentomatoes reviews, everything is pointing towards that Rapace did a good job in this. Proud that she's Swedish, hopefully she'll get more roles.

so basically all the faults can be blamed on the lost writer?
That main criticisms certainly seem to concern the script/plot.
But even if Lindelof wrote the shooting script, even if the flaws that are pointed out sound very reminiscent of his previous output, he wasn't working from scratch (it would be interesting to see Spaiht's take) and I would imagine Scott was really the one running the show, not him.
Blaming it all on Lindelof seems a bit easy (at this point, anyway).

Why is this movie being released in Europe before US? Just curious

I feel like it's a strategy being used these days on the premise that positive international buzz leads to increased US anticipation and much stronger domestic earnings, whereas strong US numbers don't really carry much weight in other countries. I've noticed this trend in a few summer blockbusters.

Movie is reviewing pretty well it seems. 82% on RottenTomatoes. Seems like Cameron and Scott is rebound for another duel to sort this out.
Getting 5 out of 6 across the board here in Norway.

Not any more than his contemporaries. I'd argue that the latter halves of the careers of director's like Scorsese, Spielberg and Cameron have been just as average as some people claiming Scott's has been. Yet most people don't question the greatness of those director's (well, maybe save for Cameron).

Cameron seems intent on clutching on to the Avatar franchise till death do them part. And unfortunately, the franchise will likely outlive him.
