I think Boyle would be a nice fit. I really, really enjoyed Sunshine. Brilliant soundtrack, good acting, decent plot (well, 2/3 of it - the third act let it down), creepy in the right places and visually beautiful. There's one scene in the film that does a fantastic job in raising the creepy/tension level (where one of the character is checking how many crew members are on board) - the response sent a chill down my spine.

I'd recommend watching it.

Sunshine was fucking awesome, so... maybe. A decent amount of people hate the third acts of the movies he's made with Alex Garland, but they're just being silly.

Cheers, will get round to that sometime as well.

Yeah I'll get round to it eventually, considering it's on Netflix. But I have the Sopranos, Battlestar, Six Feet Under and the majority of Curb to watch... i fucking hate TV.

I'm the same way. TV almost feels like a chore to me, so much time has to be devoted to a TV series that I usually just don't bother. There's a lot of shows I would like to watch, there's just usually other things that I would rather be doing with my time. I just happened to get sucked into Lost after being introduced to it by a friend while the fourth season was airing and we spent a majority of that summer getting me caught up.

Well, I won't get into this discussion here as the thread is not fitting, but the last third of Sunshine had no proper "rational" build-up and seemed too inspired by Event Horizon to be satisfying...I almost considered it as loose attempt to move from an interesting Sci-Fi movie with clever premises to a run-of-the-mill Sci-Fi horror.

He's the very definition, but who knows, maybe the mods think sometime in the next couple centuries he'll contribute one level headed, worth while post.

Popping into a thread for no other reason than because he saw me recommend the show to someone else who god forbid may enjoy it like a lot of people did, as much as that might keep him awake at night biting his fingernails off, is pretty extreme.

It seems pretty bizzare to attack characterization in Prometheus if you are an Alien fan. The first time you see Alien you are not talking about how great Brett, Lambert, Parker, Kane or Dallas are. You talk about Ripley and Ash. It's not until a 2nd or 3rd time that you start really looking a how these characters interact. It took me until my second viewing to even remember all their names, but now I like rewatching the film because I get to spend more time with those characters. Kane's last meal becomes especially interesting on the second view.

To be fair, it sounded like Alien got a lot of mixed reviews too when it came out.

But these all largely seem to be directed towards a weak script, which is worrying.

Well, that didn't sound like such a good advice to me, especially considering the guy apparently values his time... Simple as that.

Just got a weird feeling that this movie is not going to do well at the box office. Also had a horrible nightmare last night that this movie sucked

So tell me, do you prance around everywhere making sure that nobody talks about or recommends things that you don't like? You can argue about it all you want in the OT, but this is some nerve-grating shit right here.

You can act as "innocent" as you would like, but there's no two ways about it -- you are annoying as fuck.

You said the show was "a ride worth taking for sure". I disagree, hence "maybe not".
Awful "nerve-grating shit", indeed.
So you acted like you were simply saying that the guy just might enjoy the show and I was categorically arguing otherwise (let's read that again, shall we?) and basically called me a troll (which is why I've been gloating ever since the first reviews criticized the plot, I guess... oh, wait).

Heh.

So you claimed that I was arguing there was no way the guy could enjoy the show (let's read that again, shall we?) and basically called me a troll (which is why I've been gloating ever since the first reviews criticized the plot, I guess... oh, wait).

No, no. I'm calling you a troll because you've now migrated out of the Lost thread and are actively nudging yourself into what was going to be a very brief exchange about Lost in a different thread just because you have this uncontrollable, seething hatred for it. I'm sorry that you hate it so much but I do not wish to deal with your bullshit at every turn, every time I mention it, wherever I mention it. That's what's grating and that's why I'm saying that you're trolling. It's okay to troll in the OT, but to go out of your way to butt into a conversation I guess to remind to the world that you hate Lost even though we are all very much aware.

If I see someone recommend a movie, or a videogame, to someone else, even if I personally despise said product I'm not going to butt in, especially not by quoting part of the conversation to add nothing but a simple, three word post.

Maybe you two can have make-up sex in PMs and we can back to talking about the fucking movie instead of each other? Yes?

Anyone in objection to this idea?

Can't be worse then Robin Hood!

Ugh, that film was fucking abominable (apart from Mark Strong and Oscar Isaac, because they're awesome in everything).

Is Russell Crowe a good actor, save LA Confidential? Why must Cate Blanchett ruin her hotness by being a boring fuck in that film? Why is the whole film brown? Why is Robin Hood not a fox?

Boggles the mind.

I'll admit that I haven't seen any Ridley Scott film since Gladiator. Not one, even despite owning the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven which I've heard is pretty good, but I don't know that it deserves over 3 hours of my time.

Dunno, none of them have looked interesting to me and Matchstick Men's twist was spoiled for me.

edit: I take that back, I've seen Black Hawk Down, and Hannibal.

I'd recommend watching it.

That scene you love is part of the 3rd act of Sunshine.

Also, I don't recall Alien as this rich character piece. The crew was barely memorable, Ripley notwithstanding. They were there to be monster's chow. Mind you, it was a tense sci-fi horror but not that strong chracterization-wise.

Agree, it's nostalgia talking. Like I keep saying, reviews of Prometheus will mean more to me in 6 months when people rewatch it on its own terms.

Preach Lost.

Resist 3 hours of sexual celluloid.

WHY

Absolutely.

The Insider, A Beautiful Mind, Master & Commander and 3:10 to Yuma are great Crowe performances, to name some. He's particularly excellent in The Insider.

Forgot about the Insider, I'll give you that. Haven't seen A Beautiful Mind but have little issues with the other two. Meh.

Robin Hood sucks though.

Man, I saw Kingdom of Heaven in theaters and it was ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

This would have to be the greatest Theater-to-DC quality jump in history the way GAF hypes it up as one of Scott's best.

Only serious problem I had with it, is the completely non realistic character protagonist.
Absolutely my only gripe with the film.

Better than Blade Runner for me. It's incredible. Bloom isn't great but... makes Ridley a little more respectable. The man's made a lot of shite, but he's got 3/4 astonishingly good movies.

I saw the director's cut without first having experienced the theatrical cut, and I can't imagine how the movie could possibly work without some of the scenes that were gutted. Entire characters and storylines were apparently excised for the theatrical run and only restored for the DC. It probably joins Once Upon a Time in America as the most unexplainable theatrical cut of all time that was made into a masterpiece by subsequent cuts.

Well Gaf, I have a confession to make. Something I've been hiding from MovieGAF for a long time now. But, I think now is as good as time as any to say it out loud.

*deep breath*

I don't like Blade Runner.

In fact, it took 3 separate sittings years apart to even watch it all the way through.

I'm sorry ;_;

edit: oh good, last post, hopefully nobody sees this

For me, Ridley Scott has not been at the top of his games for years now. His recent efforts (American Gangster, Robin Hood, Body of Lies) have been "servicable," but markedly unmemorable.

I don't get it. Is he saying its Terrible? Or disappointing since it was held to high expectations?

I can't tell whether he is saying:

(a) that Prometheus is a disappointment on the level of BB2000; or

(b) as a joke, that Prometheus is actually not a prequel to Alien but a sequel to BB2000.

Gah.
