Are the criticisms really about it not being an Alien movie? specially after Scott repeating over an over this is not an Alien movie? We've known this since the movie was announced.

No, it seems the complaints aren't that its not the greatest thing in the world, just "pretty good".

But hey, Michael Fassbender is awesome I hear! And it looks wonderful, as a Ridley Scott film should.

I think it's the combination of a) Scott (who in my opinion is vastly overrated in media circles on the strengths of a few great films, b) him returning to the genre of his two best films, and c) one of said best films having links with this one.

I don't want to sound like a fanboy with hyperbolic expectations of a film I haven't seen yet, but I'll be very interested to see the revisionist reaction when it's released on DVD and in a few years.

He has outright said he wants to do Prometheus 2.

Just Got back from it as well.

I'd lean on a 7/10.

Major gripes : characters, mostly hollow corpses and that's very sad, because the few characters they paid attention on (David & Shaw mostly) are truely fascinating, the rest is just...ugh, Vickers and the captain are barely average and the rest is just sad and dry.

Minor gripes : pretty poor quality balance in the scenario...awesome ideas that bring a lot more in the Alien universe but a lot of inconsistency in the turns of events and motivations of the characters

The production is stellar though, the photography and the SFX's are top-class, the score is really spot-on.

The action does not disapoint.

Acting is quite good when they take the time to use it (specifically Fassbender, I'm not really a fan of the guy, but he fits his role extremely well).

The background information they provide for the Alien universe is very promising for future potential (certain?) sequels.

Entertaining? YES

Well-realised? YES

Fitting for Alien Fans? YES (but I would understand a few disapointments)

Becoming a new Sci-Fi Action/Horror reference? NO (the first Alien is still way ahead)

Feeling "complete"? NO (damn, I don't want to spoil anything, but they have left a lot of holes to fill here).

And I still don't understand the first scene... :(

If you knew that Scott wanted to do a sequel from the get go, would you still feel that unfulfilled feeling? Or would you instead just be excited for what is to come?

So what I'm gathering from these reviews is that Damon Lindelof is a horrible writer and should never be allowed to touch anything resembling an established property again.

If Ridley doesn't return, Duncan Jones to write and direct the next one please.

Seems like the movie asks a lot of questions, but doesn't necessarily give you the answers on first viewing. I'm fine with that, but I can see how it can be frustrating to those just coming out from the theatre.

Looks like this movie may need a specific spoiler thread where everyone can discuss their ideas/theories.

Yeah I'm also waiting for it to sink in, way too soon to know the impact of the film and if it's really a "landmark achievement". Actually, accolades of positive reviews while reassuring would have raised some suspicion, specially because Alien was not the kind of film that was received with open arms by audiences, if you want to redefine genres and make masterpieces is necessary to shake things up a little, and many people don't like that. If anything I'm actually happy is receiving mixed reviews, it means is not "Alien/Aliens on steroids" at least, is its own thing.

Now this I no like, what is with movies not being self-contained anymore? I know studios are greedy as hell but this sequel pushing is annoying.

Ok let's be fair. Spaihts wrote the script, as he said it on his Twitter, the shooting script is mostly his, Scott then asked Lindelof to come in and change some stuff to make it less of an Alien prequel. Stop blaming Lindelof for everything, it's annoying.

Well, it's a mixed bag. I'm excited for what could come with the Sequel, but this film feels incomplete, like, they missed a few opportunities to add some scenes and explanations to make it better, and that's independant from the fact that a sequel might come...

I don' t know if I'm making myself clear, but it's litteraly a mixed bag.

The impression I'm getting from these reviews is that the movie is very "safe".
I have the opposite impression from reading impressions... Apparently it touches upon stuff other studios wouldn't dear go near with a 10foot pole.

Ew, why? Moon was okay but highly overrated and Source Code was awful.

There are GOOD screenwriters out there, even good ones Ridley Scott has already worked with. They just get passed over by guys who have shown they can write something that makes money.

Moon was fantastic and its pace was very reminiscent of Alien. Source Code was good fun as well.

Don't think Lindelof is right for something that people want to be the next Alien. If it's a really good fun and entertaining film then fair play.

Ridley wanted from the beginning to do two movies, nothing to do with money.....

How's Noomi Rapace (Shaw) ? This is her second english speaking role, Sherlock Holms 2 didn't give her much material.

I think Scott should direct any sequel if his heart's still in it (assuming he does due to the fact it sounds like sequel bait) but Lindelof seems to be a stickler for questions > answers.

Whedon is sarcasm right? He wrote Alien Resurrection. He has done enough damage.

Also, really like the reviews. Sounds like an awesome film.

I do not want wise cracking aliens monsters.

Whedon is -perfect- for Marvel films, let him stay there.

It would be fairer to look at his potential for the series in light of his work on the Serenity film than a superhero film like Avengers. And he did a good job on Serenity.

Anyway, I would quite like to see how Neill Blomkamp or Duncan Jones would approach the series.

She's good, really, a few range of emotions that I did not expect and that she presented well.

An "ok" performance with a few shine. But as said previously they left very few space for actors to give everything they have (Even Rapace, which has one of the main characters here, but Theron is far worse, her character is flat, boring even).

Question, wasn't this at one point a two part movie? I remember some chatter some time ago or dud I imagine it?

Maybe that explains the various unresolved/unanswered questions.

Not sure. There was talk of doing another film, a sequel and apparently that will be (more) tangential from the Alien franchise.

Just saw it, and I liked it a lot. I really hope this is the start of a new franchise!

is it a movie that you think general, summer-going audiences would respond well to, or is it something only for people who actually kind of care about it and what the movie represents, i.e. being for sci-fi fans, thriller fans, Alien fans... you know what I mean.

I don't think District 9 was necessarily indicative of how an Alien film should progress - it was a lighthearted romp more than anything for me, especially its first half -, but it was a very good film. Jones would be a better choice for me.

I'm interested in where it looks like the film's going, if it is indeed sequel bait.

I haven't seen Sunshine yet, would Boyle be a good choice? I've only seen Slumdog of his and I fucking hate it, but I can tell he's quite a varied director.

Never watched it, heard too much shit about it.

It was fantastic watching it week to week, 2004-10. But even up to the last episodes, new things were being brought up that needed answering. ofc, many people could ignore this as it often looked like pedantry - see, Erigu.

thats lost for u

if I ignored stuff because of shit I've heard I probably wouldn't watch anything.

really sucks how opinions can be so influential. I say at least give something a shot if you were ever interested in it.

It's not a rule I apply to anything else really; it's always my opinion is my opinion and that's it. But I just don't really feel like allowing however many hours it takes to watch Lost when all I really hear about it is 'what the fuck is going on?'

Maybe one day. I've got too many things I'm interested in more I suppose.

heh, fair enough. I say that even if you don't like where the story goes or you're disappointed in this or that, it's a ride worth taking for sure.

Yeah I'll get round to it eventually, considering it's on Netflix. But I have the Sopranos, Battlestar, Six Feet Under and the majority of Curb to watch... i fucking hate TV.

I think Boyle would be a nice fit. I really, really enjoyed Sunshine. Brilliant soundtrack, good acting, decent plot (well, 2/3 of it - the third act let it down), creepy in the right places and visually beautiful. There's one scene in the film that does a fantastic job in raising the creepy/tension level (where one of the character is checking how many crew members are on board) - the response sent a chill down my spine.

I'd recommend watching it.

Sunshine was fucking awesome, so... maybe. A decent amount of people hate the third acts of the movies he's made with Alex Garland, but they're just being silly.
