America The Dumbest Nation

So I came across this video on youtube just now (which is admittedly very old)... and I was pretty fucking pissed by the end of it. There are over 300,000,000+ people in this country, so I understand that these dumb fucks do not represent us as a whole... I understand this. I also understand that they edited the footage to show only the extreme cases of idiocy.

But still, even then, it astounds me how fucking ignorant so many people in this country can be. Even in this age of information that we live in, there are so many fucking people who don't know shit outside of their personal lives/circle.

How much work does it take to have a decent understanding of where most major countries in the world are located? Hell, how about just the states inyour own country?

Or knowing the names of the heads of state... again, of major world powers?

Or just not being a sheep and agreeing with every fucking thing that teh president might say or have an opinion about. Even if it blatantly goes against what your position is on a subject.

I understand people have lives and are busy and might not have much time to browse world news everyday... but if these people spent a portion of the time they spent on facebook alone, they'd have a basic understanding of what is going on around the world.

One of the questions in the video went something like: Who should we invade next? And someone answered ITALY. Italy?? Really? Why the fuck why???

Be warned... You might very well rage hard by the end of the video.

Ignorant people who don't know shit outside of their personal lives/circles exist everywhere.

Right, it's not the nation that's dumb, but people that are dumb.

Exactly.

And it's just so easy in America to surround yourself with pointless shit to distract yourself from the outside world. A lot of people succumb to it, and I would even go so far as to say there's a culture of ignorance. Being smart doesn't make you the cool kid.

Hey look it's a video where they selectively choose the biggest morons to make a 'point.'

And videos like this exist for numerous European countries as well.

I have no idea what the name of the prime minister of Australia is or what she looks like. Really have no reason to, it's the worst country in europe.

If a stranger approached me and asked me questions with a cameraman (and assuming I could muster enough courage to actually speak), I would probably have a very hard time answering the most simple of questions too. Being put on the spot makes a person nervous and then they can't think straight. You want to answer quickly, but the longer it takes, the more you think about how long it's taking instead of the answer.

Even without the camera and in a more comfortable setting, I sometimes get my own name wrong.

... but then I might just be dumb.

The Japanese are even more geographically challenged than the Americans, but I'm sure you could assemble clips from every country in the world to suit whatever agenda you wanted.

Ya we already had this thread. It wasn't that long ago. And people are so use to referring to the USA as simply America(the op did it in the title), they don't always think of it as starting with a "U".

Some of these ignorant people may also be some of the happiest people on the planet. Sometimes sheer knowledge of the world and current events can make you the opposite of blissfully ignorant.

The clip is pretty old. And don't discount America too much because I doubt many Australians even entertain the notion that the most populous Islamic nation borders our northern shore.

I've seen this video several times. Still gets me each time.

Also, people can say selectively chosen clips all they want, the fact that they had the time to procure two people who couldn't correctly answer the question "how many sides does of a triangle have?" should speak volumes.

Videos that are selectively edited work towards a sensationalist agenda. This is not new.

A Youtuber, KassemG, has an entire channel dedicated to asking peopleCalifornians things and making them look stupid.

If you've been paying attention to worldwide box office receipts of Hollywood movies the past few years you'll see that America is definitely not the dumbest nation.

Nah, I used to be a huge WWF fan and I called into a radio station to win tickets to an event a long time ago. All I had to do to win was name 5 wrestlers in 30 seconds and damned if I didn't get cut off in the middle of the 5th name when time ran out. The host gave me the tickets any way. A little bit of pressure can easily make people dumber than they really are. How many people here have bombed a test even though they knew the material?

I especially hate how ALL these videos always have the "NAME A COUNTRY THAT STARTS WITH U" question. It's such a fucking trick question, because they know most people never say anything but America.

I am a little bit tired of this kind of comments. So what if Americans are fucking dumb. If there is no initicative to change the education system, what's the point of keep pounding the dead horse.

That's your justification? Really? It's a trick question because people in america never saw their nation spelt out as the United States of America? How did they even learn what U.S.A stands for then? If you're going to classify this as a trick question a better response might be "When people are asked to think a nation with a specific quality, there brain has a proclivity to think of the set of other nations as their brain has grouped them exclusively from their home country." or something to that effect. Also, the question has other answers. Uruguay and Uzbekistan off the top of my head. There's probably more.

Uganda for me.

Think of how smart the average person is, not understand that half of everyone in this country is dumber than that...

I'm not defending that they couldn't even think of another country, but I would never think of America off the bat if someone asked me that question. I would think of Uruguay.

Trick question might not have been the right term to use, but it's a fact that most people think of the country simply as America. When asked on the spot, and obviously flustered, it's not hard to fathom someone momentarily having a brain fart on that.

This question doesn't bother me too much, because I've always hated the demonym "American," although it seems like at this point in our linguistic history we are stuck with that. But that doesn't mean the country should be called that, since America refers to a continent, and our country is the USA. Just one of my pet peeves.

Regarding the "What country would you choose to invade next?" question, I don't think there are any possible answers that would make you look smart. That's an odd question.

then what should we be? state-ians?

we're the most dominant nation in the continent (and the world), so the word America belongs to us.

The uploader is from Pakistan. I'm not saying all people from Pakistan have a negative and/or misinformed view of the US, but it's not exactly a place that likes us to begin with lol.

And I understand that brain fart, but reading as to why you think it's a trick question I couldn't help but be reminded of this:

Q: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?
A: I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh. . . people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over HERE in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

Right, it's not the nation that's dumb, but people that are dumb.

people make up the nation.

anyway, America is a big country. I think sometimes people forget that all of Western Europe can sit inside America's lower 48. One language and a lot of common elements to the national culture make for a little less...experience.
