Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

Another thing I like about this controller is that the DPad is symmetrical with the buttons, which for me makes playing classic and arcade titles better.

Face button placement seems wonky, 360 controller is asymmetrical for a reason.

Also what kind of batteries? Hopefully not the same as the 360 controller because of the huge ass uncomfortable battery pack.

I'd like someone to explain why also. People always seem to say that the asymmetrical layout is better for shooters, but I've never seen a reason why this is. And why is the left stick on top good but right on top isn't? Genuinely interested in the reasoning behind this.

People are actually surprised that some prefer the GC controller to all others? I thought that was a pretty common opinion. I certainly hold it. Most comfortable controller, and best face button layout.

I know, right? Games that are centered on stick+face buttons as opposed to dual analog are few and far between these days.

Oh God. I just realized how badly I want to play a new Souls game with this.

Orayn, you just always want a new Souls game :P

It's a non-entity if it's not out-of-the-box, though. No guarantee of 3rd party support if it doesn't come with the platform.

It's the exact same configuration as the Gamepad, only minus the screen. It'll get support by default.

If anything, it just means that games with a heavy emphasis on local multiplayer (like fighters, for example) won't make extensive use of the screen. But most of those types of games wouldn't have made extensive use of the screen anyway.

Because the face buttons should be in a primary position. It'll be weird reaching down to hit the four face buttons.

Not for most 3D games. It really depends on what type of game it is though.

I'd love a first party to attempt a controller with customizable stick locations.

Added the official Iwata quote from the vid to the OP.

Ah so that was the full quote, gives everyone an option at least. I know there were gaffers who weren't particularly interested in using the pad, at least not for everything. Plus this will mean we have good controllers for multiplayer instead of some bootleg shit with old Wii motes and old Classic Controllers.

It's just the same damn controller but without the screen in the middle. The only thing you need to "support" is the ability to not play with the screen there, and they'll have to do that for streaming gameplay to the screen instead of the TV anyway.

What? This is literally just the GamePad without a screen. They can do nothing with the screen of the GamePad and have games play just like on the other consoles without this. And when that's the case, you'll even be able to use the screen to play without the TV.

Um, that was exactly my point
It allows third parties to put their stuff on the Wii U without investing any extra effort to using the Wii U screen, which would probably otherwise turn some developers off

I'm gonna take it you are left-handed. The first thing I thought when looking at it was "this symmetrical layout is perfect for lefties".

Yep. No contest.

How is it a copy if you are wanting to change it to be the xbox 360 controller? ALso it is the evolution o fthe controller and there are only three possible stick layouts for that kind of controller.

The gamecube layout (same as xbox 360 layout)
The PS2 layout (Classic Controller Pro Layout)
The Wii U layout

and guess what nintendo has not tried yet? that's right the new one....

I don't understand if people are actually makiung this a real issue because of fanboyism or what.

They already have the

Wii Motion+ Nunchuck
WiiU Gamepad
Wii COntroller Pro

These pretty muich cover all the modern controller designs bar the mouse and keyboard (not talking about proprietry controllers) so people should be happy about this. What I would be happy about if the controller has gyro's and rumble and compass.

3rd parties don't need to do anything to "support" it, other than not use the touchscreen for any essential purpose. Which they will be happy not to have to do, if they are working on a multiplatform game.

So they question remains, what makes Nintendo think people will buy multiplatform games on WiiU if they offers no meaningful control features or graphical enhancements?

So are N fans upset that Nintendo blatantly ripped off the 360 controller. Have they lost their honor?

Nah. They just reclaimed what was originally theirs in the first place. Except for the clickable sticks - those are Sony's doing, IIRC.

The right stick on top is interesting. At first it looks kinda dumb. But think about it. The D pad and face buttons are lined up, which is really nice for 2D games. And since face buttons are only used occasionally in dual analog games, maybe the the right stick on top will end up being really comfortable. I doubt you would be switching between the right analog stick and face buttons all the time.

We've come full circle. Nintendo gets a pass or two if they rip off someone else's controller. =P

Wii-U better launch at a cheap price...really uninterested in buying underpowered hardware for 200+ in 2012. The charm of motion with the Wii made it worth it but the tablet idea is underwhelming imo...

Nintendo would have to rip off a whole lot more for other companies to be able to call it even. Nintendo have been stolen off for years.

the only problem I have with the facebutton position is that I use southpaw / the claw style for FPS games and I don't know how I will adjust for this controller

Remember the Microsoft 'tablet app' that was rumoured a few days ago? It now makes more sense.

It lets them replicate all the Wii U's tablet features when played with the 'hardcore' controller. (Xbox controller + ipad + app). Then the only real benefit you get from the Wii U is having the buttons on the tablets, which very few games will probably use, because there is now a better controller available (outside of 1st party).

Nintendo's offering could still be slick enough to win the day, but Microsoft are clearly positioning to compete. It also makes it less likely we will see the next xbox any time soon (looks like an interim measure).

The best post-Saturn dpad is actually on the Vita. I want more people to copy that.

No idea about Vita's dpad, never used it, but at least Nintendo's CCPro's dpad is a million times better than that 360 dpad. And this new one Wii U Pro looks to be using the same one, so it's gonna be good.

Shit just got real! I love this. Bundle this and the screen Wii U controller with the console and I will actually buy it. It's weird how I had no interest in the Wii U until this controller.

They put the analog sticks in the best possible place. I don't see how people think that's less comfortable for games that only use face buttons for secondary actions.

Just use a different controller for games where you need a D-Pad & face buttons for the majority of the tasks.

Im yet to really try one. Foolishly enough both times I used a Vita I barely paid attention to it. Super glad to keep hearing this though since the launch PSP one was awful.

This Nintendo d-pad already looks good from the screenshots. Im guessing DSi XL style clicky goodness.
