MS's youtube video for this release is kind of interesting to me, it's entirely touch and hybrid devices, if they did market Windows 8 like that do you think people would even think about upgrading their non-touch devices?

Touch is the focus.... its pretty obvious.

I kinda expect this to be even more clear after tomorrow.... with the smartglass announcement will be geared towards tablets. If they are registering domains for it I think it's going to be more than just a airplay killer.... the name almost strikes me as a wiiU tablet controller killer too (my guess for what it will be).

The text in regards to Win 8 doesn't actually point anything out that isn't true, surprisingly. 8's a bold move, and does have the potential to explode in their face. Saying it's in 'Serious Danger' at the top is a bad choice, though.

Acer is unveiling its first Windows 8 collection at Computex and Taipei, and while it’s showing off some other, non-traditional designs, its Aspire S7 ultrabook is quite a looker. The 1080p touchscreen laptop is coming in two sizes — 13.3 and 11.6 inches — and Acer is quoting 12 and 9 hours of battery life, respectively. Other details are light, but Acer is adding a glossy layer of glass to the outside of the 13.3-inch machine’s aluminum lid. It seems like the company is tempting fate a little by putting glass on the outside of its laptop , but the "trendy and elegant appearance" must be worth it.

And the flood of Windows tablets begins! With only four months or so to go before Microsoft finalizes the OS, we had a feeling Computex 2012 would bring lots of Win8 devices, and it looks like we won't be disappointed. Acer just used its press conference here in Taipei to launch its long-awaited first Windows 8 slates, the Iconia W700 and Iconia W510. That first flavor packs a relatively massive 11.6-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) touchscreen, and ships with a cradle that positions the device at 70 degrees for landscape viewing or 20 degrees for touch use. It has more than 8 hours of battery life and also includes a trio of USB 3.0 ports, along with Dolby Home Theater for enhanced audio.

The Iconia W510 includes 10.1-inch IPS display and a detachable keyboard dock that doubles as an extended battery, enabling up to 18 hours of use. You can also rotate the device 295 degrees for presentations -- assuming you're lecturing a small group and not a packed auditorium, of course. There's no pricing and availability to speak of just yet -- we're hoping to see that hit later in the week.

I think 11.6" would be the minimum for me to use Win 9 comfortably.

And here we have our first problem: It doesn't state anywhere whether this is x86 or ARM. Kind of an important distinction to be leaving out.

Hate on me but $799 for the 10.1" Win 8 Tablet seems expensive. I know we don't know much about it, but when you can get the iPad 3 for $500 it seems a little over priced when the screen is arguably better on the iPad 3 anyways. Would have to have some beastly innards + 32 or 64 gigs of storage for that price too.

At anyrate maybe it's just me, but after 24 hours or so of use damn is the release preview a metric fuck ton faster than the consumer preview. It's like night and day across the board. I'm also actually *GASP* using IE10 to type this.

Makes more sense why the W700 is priced the way it is. It's basically a laptop without the keyboard. I figured this might be the case with the $999 price point, and some tech sites saying Acer is positioning the W700 as a desktop like replacement.

It makes the 510 hella over priced though by about $300 bones.

Having the full windows 8 more than makes up for the price of the w700 (but the 510 is very overpriced and don't really expect that one to sell if the arm spec is true). Still the 700 would be like having a ipad and MacBook air which it is a significantly better and cheaper option. That w700 if the cradle has hdmi out will be my leader in terms of which win8 device I'm buying.... its almost exactly the size and type of device I'm looking for.

This is funny. Ultrabooks and Airs can't achieve the battery life that ARM devices can. ARM devices can't achieve the performance that Ultrabooks can. Everything has a tradeoff.

Probably why the 510 costs so much. They are aiming both of these "Tablets" as "Desktop Replacements" verses ARM iPad/Android competitors.

Windows 8 doesn't run on ARM. Windows RT runs on ARM.

If it says it runs Windows 8, it is x86.

Says ~ 400 to 799 for the 510 too. Pretty good prices for x86 machines if you ask me. Anyway you really have to compare these models to the top tier ipads, im sure these machines have a min of something like 64 gb.

No, that's done through the desktop browser (Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs). Can choose to make desktop IE the default from there.

The way default programs are handled was overhauled in Windows 8. Applications can no longer grab and hold default status like they could in Windows 7. In every single case, the user needs to choose the default program.

So Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc. do not have control over default status. When existing applications try to make themselves the default program, it's ineffective.

The Default Programs control panel was overhauled to make it much easier to set defaults, as a result.

If you change the search engine for Desktop IE it'll change it for Metro IE as well.

It really sounds to me like you have a problem with your installation, maybe you're missing drivers?

When I'm browsing on my tablet and simple quick flick of my finger will scroll the page quite a long way. It has inertia.

Its kinda sad because apple isnt the 'luxury' product of the tablet market, because they have their supply lines and costs cut down to a minimum, more so than anyone else can...

Fact is, lost of android tablets have been priced around the same as an ipad, or more, but its kinda like the opposite of the windows desktop world, ios has all the crap on it, all the apps on it, and all the support, meanwhile the other once can come off looking like the luxury items with not much on it >.>

Wonder what their margins are like, im guessing smaller than on iphone.

I also wonder how much $$ the windows license costs, plus how much more than an ARM chip intels are.
