GAF @ E3: Impressions from the E3 showfloor by GAFfers!

chubigans

y'all should be ashamed
So I was wondering if any GAF peeps have some impressions they'd like to share after day 1. I've seen some impressions in some random threads, so I'll ask that they repost in here as well.

Let's get the impression train going!

Yeah there has to be at least ONE Gaffer that is interested in the Wii U from playing it. Has to.

Oh and how is Watch Dogs?

Played Scribblenauts Unlimited and Batman AC AE on Wii U today. Scribblenauts worked really well, and utilized the touch screen much like Remix does on iPad. You can type fast if you're used to it, and it was extremely fluid. I almost preferred playing on the smaller screen. I asked when this was launching, and the guy said "shooting for launch".

Batman played just like the 360 version, but the inventory is much better and more manageable with the touch screen. I am curious as to how this works when playing on just the smaller screen, but forgot to ask. Still, it's a port so I can only expect small incremental changes to the interface. The Wii U controller feels great after only a few minute of use, but would take some time to learn where all the buttons are at. Also, the tilt aiming (of the batarang for instance) will take some major getting used to. I'm sold on the system though.

Will post more on other games in a bit. Ask me questions if you want.

this is a repost of stuff in the nintendo conference thread. non-nintendo stuff to come in a bit.

so i didn't see the conference.

walked in this morning, went straight to the booth. saw the nintendo land stuff. messed around with panorama view. yeah it's what you'd expect. the gamepad itself i think isn't that bad, but the grips on the side are too small. the analog sticks are a great improvement over last year's model at least.

zelda: battle quest - pretty boring. it's like the swordfight thing in wii sports resort with some crappy archery stuff if you're the loser with the gamepad.

luigi's mansion: ghost thing - it's basically pac-man vs. so that might be fun for a little while.

donkey kong: puzzle game - actually fun. easily the best part of nintendoland. probably because there's a bunch of puzzles and it requires that you pay attention to things and stuff.

animal crossing: whatever - it's kinda the phantom hourglass multiplayer? i didn't ever seem to get anything done. so yeah.

ninja stars: subtitle - another proof of concept thing like the zelda thing that i can't believe they turned into an actual minigame.

unlike the initial wii sports stuff i can't see myself to returning to any one of these aside from donkey kong. and i would be pretty cool with donkey kong if these were included in the system or available separately on the e-shop. i did get pins for playing them though. that was neat.

new super mario bros. u was next. that was fun. the level design is more nsmbw and less nsmb1/nsmbds so yeah. it looks good too, for what it is. one of the guys we were playing with boasted that we needed to step up our game since he got all the 3 big coins.

my friend: who's that guy?
me: mario.
my friend: it will be done.

and then my friend with the gamepad proceeded to place blocks around him to kill him. it was pretty great.

after that we played tank! tank! tank! and i think that's gotta be an eshop game because otherwise: uh-oh. i also saw trine 2: director's cut so maybe it is.

i don't fucking get the point of having game & wario AND nintendoland. it's pretty much the same shit.

after that we went kinda looking around the nintendo booth. played with the ccpro. the sticks at the top feel weird (just their position), but the face buttons feel good. saw pikmin 3 but didn't play it. i'll make sure to do that tomorrow, along with project p-100 which i didn't know what it was.

as far as other wii u or 3ds stuff goes, we only played rayman legends after that. it was the same demo from the ubisoft conference but PLAYING IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME. i came away with a huge smile after playing it, and even my friend was reasonably impressed with the gamepad implementation. as i put the controller back, i turned around to see my best friend, michel ancel, had been watching us play (and me fail like an idiot at certain parts).

at this rate, i think rayman legends will probably be the best launch game. nsmbu was fun though, and again, i haven't played pikmin 3. pikmin 3 did look like it used to be a wii game though. there wasn't anything special about how it looked, and the wii remote + nunchuck stuff kinda made that obvious. however, i would prefer it with wii remote + nunchuck controls anyway so that's nice.

and then of course nothing really looked great on the system in general. it was probably apparent at the conference, but there weren't any trailers or teases of upcoming 3d marios, zeldas, or metroids. the whole show floor looked like they were heavily continuing off the wii's initial vibe, and the lack of retail stuff that could've or should've been there (call of duty, or darksiders ii), really made a huge difference in the general feel between the other two booths.

i won't talk much about the sony booth because this isn't the place for that, but i think they had at least the most varied lineup at the show. i mean they didn't support the vita at the conference, but it was there in full force at the booth, even so far as each one was a separate controller for playstation all-stars. microsoft also had a nice vibe going for it, with lots of fun fanstuff going on for halo 4 and forza (like todd mcfarlane signing autographs and the big ol' warthog you could take a picture with using a real camera). that's nothing to say of all the third party stuff that was there.

probably the most telling thing was that this morning, there was a section to the nintendo booth that had been cordoned off to keep people away from the nintendoland stuff throughout the day (because it was busy and people were trying to get in). at the end of the day, the ropes that had separated it from the rest of the booth had been removed and you could just walk in.

was there too much looking down on the controller and up at the screen for batman

is it going to be a problem?

Not really, because if there was action to be concerned about, the touch screen switches to show you the action instead of the inventory screen automatically. You can also set quick inventory slots to the d-pad, so that helps if you're concerned.

How's the screen look compared to, say, an iPad or Vita? I'm curious as to the somewhat low resolution and if that's apparent at all.

that's ingenius !!!

Here's my impressions that I posted in the Vita General Advice Thread:

I had a great time at E3 today, and I paid particular attention to the Vita.

I played:

MGS HD Collection: It looked awesome, and well, it was MGS3 on my Vita. I couldn't ask for more, really.

LBP Vita: Amazing visuals. Same fun LBP game play. I can't wait.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time: Visuals disappointed me a bit during cutscenes (no cel-shading it looked like), but the visuals when actually playing the level were sharp as hell. Game was fun too. I love Sly.

Gravity Rush: They had the full game there, so I got to play a mission that was longer and more involved than the painfully short demo. Visuals were great, controls were great, fun, fun ,fun game. I cannot WAIT until next Tuesday.

PS One Classics: I played Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, and Final Fantasy VII. They had more, but those were running. I was impressed with how they looked on the Vita. TR is horribly slow and clunky. The genre has evolved too much to make that a title I want to revisit.

FFVII looked surprisingly good on the screen, even though it was only running at 4:3, and it is, in my opinion, the "least attractive" of the PS1 Final Fantasies. The Sony guy there assured me that there would be options to make it full screen, and map the controls. It was set to Japanese style controls. I'm really looking forward to playing SOTN, Alundra, FFIX, Chrono Cross, and Vagrant Story on my Vita. They will look amazing.

PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale Vita: Visuals were super impressive and sharp. I played against PS3 and other Vita players (2 Vita, 2 PS3). Controls were nice and smooth. The combat was fun and hectic, and the KO with supers only wasn't bad, and was actually kind of fun, as you need to have an opening to pull of the super, but you can be interrupted by people. It was hilarious yelling at the other people to gang up on the Kratos that had a full Level 3 super, and was trying to unleash it on all of us.

First round, I played as Kratos on Vita, and got served. Second round, I played as Sly Cooper on PS3 and got even more served (Sly feels like an advanced player character; he's super quick and agile, and his various skills seem like they have some strategy to using them). Third round, I played as Kratos again on PS3, and that time I came in first!

I'm a huge Smash Bros fan, and this feels similar, and yet, different. I really enjoyed it, and they mentioned that they are looking to do a two pack deal like with MLB The Show, where you pay $80(USD) or something, and get the PS3 and Vita versions.

If so, then sign me up. I'd probably get the Vita version, if I only had to choose one, because it looked amazing on that screen.

The colors are a lot more vibrant on both PS3 and Vita.

It was actually kind of funny, because I was playing on the Vita, but I could also just look up at the screen, and play it on the TV, without having to play on the Vita. But, dat screen.

I think a lot of the negative reactions to this game are blown out of proportion. After spending some time with it, I think it's awesome. I'll be there day one for this one.

It's a shame, because there were some other games on Vita that looked awesome that I didn't have time to play(and I wasn't allowed to play Guacamelee), but it's disappointing that Sony didn't mention any of those games at E3, or showed them during their conference. It gives the impression that the Vita doesn't have anything, but I think there was significant floor space dedicated to it. There were rows of Vita's, all playing various games.

Also, Sound Shapes looked AWESOME, but I didn't have time to play it (and there were quite a few people waiting in line too).

so after checking out the nintendo booth we scouted out the rest of the west hall, just to get a feel for what we would like to check tomorrow. like i said, microsoft had some fun halo 4 stuff going on and that looked cool. at the sony booth a lot of people were walking around with last of us t-shirts, but the game wasn't playable for us normies on the show floor unfortunately so i will have to keep directing my irrational hatred towards naughty dog for the time being.

played playstation all-stars twice. first it was on the vita against my friend on the ps3. the vita controlled pretty well, but the images were too small on the screen. i can't imagine how a smash bros. will look if it's already so tiny on the vita. i eventually started looking at the tv screen for reference and somehow won despite not knowing what to do.

the four player session i played later was much more successful. i couldn't do anything as parappa or fat princess, but i was a fucking beast as kratos. sweet tooth was also okay, but the rankings were 4th place with -2, 3rd place with -1, 2nd place with 0, and then me with 9. his supers were great. the levels were mostly good, but the jak and daxter level kinda sucked if you wanted to do a downward attack (and wind up going through four floors straight to the water below). it got annoying. however, the god of war/ratchet & clank level that you see in the trailer, and the hades level were both pretty neat. lots of different obstacles to add to the craziness.

that was the only game i played at the sony booth, since atlus was giving out t-shirts and we moseyed on over to their booth for that. however, i noticed ni no kuni was playable, so that one will be one of those i play tomorrow, definitely.

we went over to the south hall after atlus. it was about 3:00. we got a feel for the games there too, checked out some stuff that we normally don't look at (like third party hardware stuff, just for fun- probably because i'm turning into an old man). i don't think i played anything for a while.

we went over to the sega booth. my friend played sega racing all-stars transformed and it looked pretty cool. flying around in general was pretty neat, and more interesting than the gliding in mario kart 7. sonic team head guy iizuka was there too, and i was the only guy who recognized him, i think. there was a game called hell's something. it was 2d and looked kinda like drill dozer in a way, except fun. we went over to super monkey ball for the vita. my friend didn't like the vita, particularly the sticks. the producer of the monkey ball games talked to him and showed him some different features. you can take pictures of things in the real world and turn them into super monkey ball levels. if you shake the vita, it'll make the level more difficult. so my friend made the level really difficult against the producer's advisement and wound up beating the level.

we went over to konami's booth after that, but we kept on running into people we knew. i saw a couple people from work. my friend saw someone from his old job (somehow). i recognized rubyeclipse and he was at the sega booth. so we chatted a little bit.

we didn't do anything at konami's booth but just look around a bit. we did check out all the major players aside from ea for some inexplicable reason (we hadn't realized we'd skipped them until the drive home). we sat in for a little demo of the quantum conundrum from square enix, which looks to be a neat little portal-like thing. and i can get tf2 stuff if i preorder it on steam apparently! i'll look into it in a bit.

next up was a return to the west hall. nothing major happened for the rest of the day, aside from running into charles martinet in the men's room at the very end of the day. i plan on hitting pikmin 3, project p-100, ni no kuni, ac3, alien: colonial marines, persona 4: the arena, and several others tomorrow. i think we went through the longest lines today, thankfully.

Oh nice, I'd totally go for that.

Did you ever feel lost in the chaos with the Battle Royale game? That is, did you ever lose sight of your character?

Thanks for the impressions everyone!

quick question. How does the touchscreen feel with the finger? do i need to stab at it hard with my fingernail for it to respond?

works pretty nicely, actually. i didn't play much of the touch screen stuff aside from the ninja star throwing, but it was pretty responsive. it reacted well to how quickly i slid my finger across as well (faster sliding meant faster and further traveling of the ninja star).

;_; Did you ask him about Beyond Good and Evil 2?

nah, i already bothered him last year on a couple different occasions. he's usually with someone so i feel weird interrupting him so i can be a fanboy and ask questions he's unable to answer.

last year when i saw him, i did wish him luck on bge2, and he kinda cringed and said, 'yeah, it'll be a while...' so i'm assuming nothing has changed.

Thanks for the impressions Ani.

How were the graphics? Any apparently jaggies or noticeable AA?

i'm the wrong person to ask. i think that it was reasonably up to current-gen standards, but there was no graphical showcase for the machine at all. pikmin 3 is obviously a wii up-port. nsmbu was never going to be a graphical beast. rayman legends is beautiful, but not in the system-pushing sort of way. zombi u is ugly and reminds me of left 4 dead and left 4 dead came out years ago.

jaggies and aa? i mean i have a hard time picking those out unless they're super-noticeable. i can't even tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps.

Did you test "Post 217" and "GAF"? Please do. :D

Edit:

;_; Did you ask him about Beyond Good and Evil 2?

I forgot that you can just use the Vita as a controller like that if you're doing local play. Hah, that's pretty neat.

To those who played PSABR, was there any depth to the gameplay that you felt?

I'm watching the videos and yea they look kind of fun but I fail to see the depth. It looks very limited in depth as in combos and moves look very simple.

it's kinda like smash bros.? it's more of a party fighter so if you think that game has depth, you might think psabr does too. i didn't throw any combos together, at least not intentionally.

i did enjoy it though, for what it's worth. i've never been a big fan of the traditional fighters like tekken, virtua fighter, or street fighter.

silly question, but is there a slot for the stylus on the wii U controller?

yes, it's on top.

Could someone please take a picture of the text on the back of the Wii U or the controllers? I'm curious to find out the 3-letter hardware code.

Hawken is hot to death. It's tucked away in the Alienware booth, where random PC demos usually pop up. Hard to believe that it's DX9 UE 3.0 while watching it run. They did a really good job with the motion blur and pixel shader effects.

Gameplay-wise, it sort of feels like a cross between a western and eastern mech game. The mechs have some weight to the controls but not excessively so. It seems to have that quality of being accessible without being shallow, which means that it will have some longevity for me. There are lots of tactical nuances, like the ability to repair yourself in battle and deploy items like shields and turrets. Strategy is just as important as aiming ability here, which is refreshing.

In short, stomping around in a big, graceful, heavily armed mech is all kinds fun.

Did you ever feel lost in the chaos with the Battle Royale game? That is, did you ever lose sight of your character?

Thanks for the impressions everyone!

Yeah, I actually got lost a few times, mostly when another player was playing as the same character (ie, two Sly's and two Kratos').

To be fair, I often got lost playing Smash Bros as well.

At first, I wasn't paying any attention to what number player I was, and that was troublesome, but then, in the second and third match, despite getting owned as Sly, I was able to pay more attention. By the third match, I was fine.

It was really, really fun. It was actually a lot more fun than I was expecting. I sort of lowered my expectations, because of all of the negativity in the thread making me second guess the game.

Now that I've had hands on, I have to say, man, it's going to be a great party game. I think, even for non-PS fans. I didn't know all of the characters in Smash, despite my long history with Nintendo, but it was still a very fun game.

I think the biggest surprise for me was the vibrant colors. I just think earlier videos were captured with some crazy color issues, because the game is very colorful, and does, indeed, pop.

I also got to see the AC3 closed doors demo, and that was awesome. So pumped for that one.

I didn't play too much. Pikman 3 was pretty fun. I had never played a Pikman game before, and the Wii U controller seemed to have some neat features.

I was really disappointed in the Microsoft section. Outside of Halo 4, they just had a bunch of Kinect stuff, some XBLA stuff (the saving grace of the 360 for me), and a bunch of third party titles.

Even though Sony didn't show much at their conference, I thought they had a lot more games on hand.

Sound Shapes looked awesome. Sports Champions 2 was actually really fun (first Move game I ever played), and Sorcery was also really, surprisingly fun. I'm getting pushed further and further towards "buying a Move" at some point in the future.

Dust 514 looked really awesome, but I didn't get to play it. GoW Ascension also looked awesome, as did LBP Karting. I just wish I had more times.

Sleeping Dogs and Hitman surprised me with how fun they looked, and they've moved up my list. Borderlands 2 looked really, really cool, as did Guardians of Middle Earth.

MG Revengeance looked great in trailer form, but sadly, they stopped having demonstrations by the time me and my coworker could check it out.

Man, so much I'm missing, I'll update again when I remember more. Lol.

Goddamn, you really are in troll mode today huh?

How is giving someone info about the screen trolling? Drop your shield, there's no need for defense here. So shut the hell up about "trolling". If you can't handle someone's opinions like an adult, stop reading their posts.

A question that has already been answered, and I don't believe he asked anything about how it looked. Just look at literally ANY Nintendo topic today and you're blabbering away in all of them. Kind of hard to ignore. I know it's a little easier to get away with trolling at E3 since it bring all the trolls out, but just give up. We get it, Nintendo's conference sucked, and you don't like the WiiU. I'm just tired of seeing you say the same crap in every thread.

I also have to give out an honorary award to Nintendo for having absolutely stunningly beautiful women demoing the Wii U games. Holy shit. I didn't see many booth babes, but I'm thinking it's because Nintendo had them all.

They weren't even dressed trashy, but 90% of them were just amazing.

I didn't get much extensive time with the Wii U, but I did find the screen to be slightly unresponsive, but it's probably because I'm spoiled by the Vita's touch screen, and I work on smart phones all day, and I think the iPhone/Pad screens are more responsive than the Wii U's. But I found the screen size to be really good, and the device was waaay more comfortable to hold than I was anticipating. Photos always make it seem so big and unwieldy, but it was rather comfortable. I'm not sure how long play sessions will hold out, but I was holding it for a good 10 minutes while my co-worker played with the Pikman demo (the Wii U portion of the demo just used the screen as a map I was toying around with while he played), and it felt good.

Overall, I was more impressed with the Wii U than I've been with a Nintendo device in a long time. At least it was HD. It was nice seeing them step into the HD fold.
