PS Vita general advice thread, part 3 | Veni, vidi, Vita

I think it's clear at this point that Sony calculated that their wall to wall coverage on playstation.com would be where Vita would shine since they have been parceling out this content over the last few days. It's pretty baffling that this wasn't shown during the conference though.

I think it wasn't shown during the conference since the general consensus (at least on GAF) last year was that everyone hates montages and we only want on-stage demos. Maybe Sony took the criticism to heart. We only got the short montage at the beginning. Or maybe they really didn't have time to show it. Who knows.

They certainly had time. They wasted so much time with extra long showings of Wonderbook, God of War and a few others.

You may be right about wanting to avoid a montage.

But I think Sony's thinking was "The system sells itself when its in people's hands" so their focus is the floor. But what they didn't realize is that any positive news from the floor is buried under the headline "SONY IGNORES VITA AT E3 CONFERENCE."

The vita can have the best floor showing of any system ever at this point and the whole thing will still be deemed a failure.

Sony had a choice here and they made the wrong one. It's as simple as that.

Playing through P3P and I'm liking the sim aspect of it. Are there any other psp/vita games that have more of this?

P3P = Persona 3 for PSP ? I'm playing it now. Only final battle left. What sim aspect are you referring to ? You mean the girl friend sim ?

Yeah Persona 3 for PSP. Pretty much all the stuff you can do out of combat. Picking who I want to spend time with or what I want to do at night. That kinda stuff. Had never played a game that had that in it before like P3P does, seems pretty cool.

That 2:46 montage I just watched of Vita footage looked really, really good. I wonder why it wasn't shown? It sure would have gone a long way to help the Vita's image in the eyes of it's most critical fans.

Because let's face it, the Vita has an image problem at this point. There's not much of an actual software problem from where I'm sitting (YMMV obviously) as I've been very satisfied with what I have up to this point and have plans for many more titles this year. But there's certainly a perception issue with many people and especially here on Neogaf that the Vita is dead, has no games, blah blah. There's some pretty good looking stuff in the sizzle reel there that certainly would have helped with the perception problem.

Messed with some vita games at e3. I tried Jet Set Radio, MGS HD Collection, Lego Batman 2, Ogarythm (don't know spelling), and Hitsune something.

All I have to say is MGS, Jet Set Radio and Lego Batman will get my money. JSR didn't use the touchscreen or back touchpad from what I played even though I thought it would. MGS blew me away. Lego Batman 2 was better than I expected. In the demo, you can switch between 2 characters. These games looked really good, I didn't notice framerate issues during gameplay for what its worth.

As for the rhythm games, I guess I have no rhythm. The Hitsune game I had no clue what to do. After watching a video on youtube I realized the shapes matched what button I was suppose to hit. Boy do I feel dumb. I was hitting the screen as the shapes went over the other. Ogarythym I just needed more time with.

For those that missed my super early morning post...

The Vita is not Doomed (Even though Sony tried their best)

Take a look if you want to read some not-doom and not-gloom. I know there's been so very little of it. There's also some tidbits from the show floor and some other stuff (mostly all stuff i've posted here... but all in one place!)

I noticed in my dashboard that 4chan linked to it... which was really cool. They called me names and stuff, which was expected. But the best is that i'm a viral marketer for Sony. That's really awesome.

Actually, I would love to have that job. Sony?? You guys looking? Hire me.

Also wanted to say im wrapping up Resistance and it's not nearly as bad as the press has made it out to be. Nothing about it is exceptional, but nothing is borked either. I found it pretty enjoyable. I am a fan of the universe though... and im sure that helped.

I enjoyed reading your site update regarding the Vita and it's showing at E3. My contention from almost day 1 has been that the machine is great, the launch games were good, the potential was awesome and the marketing has been atrocious. And it's this atrocious marketing and lack of visibility that has lead to much of the image and sells problem that the Vita currently has. And that sad thing is it looks as if Sony is not really doing anything to fix it and the E3 treatment just backs that up. I mean really, when has making the consumer work to find out how awesome your product is ever been a good idea? Because in the absence of marketing that's exactly the situation that you are putting your product in. The Vita deserves better.

Thanks for the impressions. And it's Miku Hatsune, the vocaloid game that SEGA is thinking about bringing over. And that's good to hear about Lego Batman as I have it pre-ordered. It seems like it would be well suited to pick up and play sessions on the Vita.

I think Sony's real mistake was underestimating the gaming media's desire to sensationalize and blow things out of proportion.

They were silly to think that the gaming press would just go to the show floor, see all the Vita games that weren't at the conference, and say, "Hey guys, there actually WAS a lot of good things on show for Vita!"

Instead, they ran with the usual doom and gloom bullshit, to pad that story count, and in a few weeks, we'll finally start to hear about the games on display.

I was surprised at how many games were on show for Vita, and I just didn't get to try them all, and some were restricted access (like Guacamelee).

All in all, the Vita's future is looking impressive, but you won't get that kind of optimism (based on people that have actually seen and played a lot of the upcoming games), from the gaming media. It's actually really annoying, and part of the reason I ignore the current mainstream gaming press. Their shtick is as oily and annoying as a used car salemans.

I left the Sony section very, very impressed with what I played for Vita, and what I glimpsed (but didn't get to play).

The doom and gloom hardly ever pans out in these cases. People expected the Wii, PS3, PSP, and 3DS to fail. They turned that shit around real nice. I don't expect the Vita to be any different. Especially with the software library it's building, and has been building since day one.

Most of the gloom is coming from people that don't even have any hands on experience with the thing.

I bought Persona 2 but haven't played it yet. Not sure if it follows similar format but people told me it's different from P3P.

Persona 4 is landing in US in October 2012.

Other Vita users may know more...

Ah yes, I apologize for the misspellings. The lego batman game also had some fun puzzles in the demo. I think I got stuck on the last puzzle.

Sony had a dedicated section for the Vita demos where Nintendo didn't have one for the 3DS (disappointing as I was more curious about portable games from Sony and Nintendo). Nintendo just had some booth babes walking around with 3DS demos. Overall I think I saw more playable Vita games than 3DS games. I don't see people mentioning that.

You'll be in for a treat when Persona 4 Golden hits then. It's basically an improved P3P (minus a girl side).

O_o

So on IGN's website they have a schedule of their live stream and it shows that tomorrow (June 7th) they are showing Forsaken Souls at 4:20 PDT. They have yet to show Soul Sacrifice so I am pretty sure it is Soul Sacrifice. But it's intriguing that they would use that title after knowing the real title. They are probably just trolling people.

I think Sony's real mistake was underestimating the gaming media's desire to sensationalize and blow things out of proportion.

Yes and no. I think Sony should review itself first. The reason why this is happening is:

(1) Sony is not in the good book for some/many gamers (In fact it is blacklisted by some). They are presumed to be guilty before proven innocent. Brand marketing is supposed to solve this problem, but Sony is not into it. They never really spend $$$ and deep thoughts in tackling this problem. Even with "Michael", it's a one off exposure. Fixing this problem requires deep engagement with the gamers.

(2) Sony does not understand the symbolism of appearing in E3 presentations from the gamers' point of view. They only see from their $$$ and cents perspective. It's not wrong per se, but it's a HUGE missed opportunity in helping to tackle (1). They have been looking at it from a pure numbers, and bottom up perspective; while Internet media is more a shallow, top-down tool. If it's not there, people believe it doesn't exists *especially* when Sony is not in the good book. ^_^

EDIT: They make good/great products, but they are marred by the noises that Sony keeps ignoring.

Wait... it's a brand new game right ? (as in new story, enemies, similar format). Which girl is missing ?

It's an upgraded port of an existing game (Persona 4). He means that it is a better port than the psp persona 3 port except that it does not have the choice of making the main character a girl which was a big thing added to the psp version of 3.

Gentlemen, check your download history.

I've been able to download several ( not all ) games from the PSP Go promotion on my Vita.

Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, LBP, Avatar, Modnation Racers.

I couldn't download them before, but now it's possible.

Excellent news for me with GT and Motorstorm !
GT still requires me to download via PS3 here in NA. Picked it up yesterday and it looks fantastic on Vita.

Mod nation previously didn't work at all on Vita. I'll give it a shot through my PS3 again.

Seems that Gravity Rush is available for sale at the Playstation Lounge in NYC and through the Sony online store.

Now, do I try for it and pay the $15 for express shipping for Friday delivery.

Cool thanks ! I look forward to that game. <3 P3P.

So I downloaded the UMvC3 character Alt pack off the PSN for 20 bucks. Then I went to turn on the game and it installed it....but then my Vita took forever to load up UMvC3 so I decided to close the game's livearea screen real quick and boot it back up but then the main screen was all shaking so I decided to turn it off via the power button and now it's frozen on a sort of loading screen and it won't do anything.

Any ideas guys? Think i'll just let the battery run out and see if that works.

Edit: nvm it works now.

I can confirm that Little Big Planet PSP from my PSP Go bundle shows up in my download list as available to download on my Vita. The other games show up but can't be downloaded on the Vita.

Crazy Sony thought this wasn't worth showing. They really thought setting aside 3 minutes for this wasn't worth it? Just showing this alone would had blunted a lot of criticism they are now facing.
It was more important for Andrew "The Momentum Killer" House to talk for 25 minutes about Wonderbook and PS Suite.

Really don't want to see him at E3 ever again.

That Wonderbook did kill the momentum of that conference.
Never really thought of it that way. I just found it to be a weird fit in between Beyond, which had large amounts of swearing, and God of War/Last of Us' gore. Talk about not targetting an audience.

Not sure if that tweet was a joke or not, because that 3ds presentation was horrid. What was new and exciting (that everyone didn't already know)? Threediots?? Between nothing and that garbage, well, nobody wins...

So I had $40 in my PSN wallet i was saving for Gravity Rush but I have played that demo several times now and even though it looks pretty cool I have a hard time spending full price for a 10-12 hour game from what I have read. I will pick it up later when it eventually goes on sale. I picked up Disgaea 3 Absence of Detention instead because of my love of SRPG's and I really enjoyed Disgaea 4. So far not disappointed at all. Was kind of worried it would feel like a retread already having Disgaea 1 PSP on my Vita but it definitely looks better and i'm liking the extras. Those colors just pop on that OLED screen, looks really good. I love me some SRPG's on this thing.

in all reality its a decent lineup due by holidays....problem is its old news. Now compare that showing against what Sony showed at their vita presser, and well whos the joke?

Finally hopped on the Vita bandwagon! Was waiting for $199 (or at least current price with game/memory card) and finally got it for $199 brand new. That deal was gone in about 15 seconds! <3 Amazon Marketplace

$50 Barnes and Noble gift card covered most of the 32GB memory stick and I got this nice case months ago, so in total that's ~$250 for Vita, 32GB memory card, and a cheap case. Not a bad deal at all, I'd say
grin.gif

Can't wait to finally play Marvel and Rayman, along with PSP games I missed like Tactics Ogre and Persona 3:P. I've also been eyeing VT4 and HSG but I'm worried that they don't have much single-player content. And when Soul Sacrifice and PSO2 come out...EXCITE

Yes, the 3DS-Show didn't reveal anything new, but it at least showed that some games are coming and how they look like.

The press conference of Sony was like:

"You can get an assassins creed game this year and cod, but that isn't ready to be shown, so you should hope it'll be a good game."

People with Vitas know that there are cool games coming and already avaiable, but many do not, since everyone tells you "vita has no games".

And this press conference didn't help at all to show that isn't the case.

played a lot of vita today. not a lot of huge impressions, but they're something i guess.

i played gravity rush first, and i think the concept is cool, but i didn't actually do much except fly around and get a free shirt afterwards. i played munch's odyssey hd, twisted metal 2 on psone classics (apparently if the psone game didn't have analog support, then neither will these). i also played new little king's story, and it looks and acts just like the wii game. so if you're a vita owner and don't know about this one, i suggest you look it up.

i also played sly cooper: thieves in time. the segment i played was in a circus where sly was robin hood-themed. i could fire an arrow, and using the vita's motion control, guide it to the bullseye if i had initially shot it somewhat off-target. i assume the same works using the motion controls in the dual shock 3 on the ps3 version. the rest of it was platforming up this giant circus, firing arrows with ropes on them to tightrope through the place, and eventually reach a cutscene. i had fun with it, and hope the rest of the game turns out good. it was the only 3d platformer i played at the show, and i'll be keeping an eye on it when it comes out this year.

and then there's sound shapes. this is my game of the show. rayman legends had this great segment where you platform along to music, every jump coming at a beat, and the ropes correlating to guitar parts. sound shapes is like if they took that concept and just made a full game out of it. the game is more about the platforming that the music, and the game doesn't make the music based on the syncing of your platforming. however the more stuff you collect, the fuller the song becomes. the levels i played were very well designed, and the extremely simple look of the game works well in its favor. afterwards, i was shown how to use the editor, and the game actually has a small interactive tutorial anyway. a lot of it used the rear touch pads on the vita, and i thought it worked great, and probably a lot better than a ps3 controller would. this information is probably known, but you'll be able to get the ps3 and vita version together when the game launches, and it's going to go on sale for $14.99. i don't want to sound like i'm shilling for the game, but it's a pretty good price if there are a lot of challenging levels and the game lasts a while. it was one of the few games at the show i came back to later to try again.

And we know what Vita games are coming as well. But sometimes it's nice to *see* things.

I don't think the 3DS conference was some sort of magical event. But it was some old guys showing off games. Exactly what Sony didn't do.

Also, 4chan, interesting place that is.

That Wonderbook did kill the momentum of that conference.

I went from: "Hmm... kids might gobble this up" to "oh shit... J. K. Rowlings... kids and an embarrassing number of adults are going to eat this up" to "ugh... Move... :picardwtfisthisshit.png:"

Thanks for the impressions. Sly 4 for Vita looks really sharp graphics-wise in the hands-on videos I've seen. What were your thoughts on the graphics?

i thought it looked nice stylistically. graphics themselves were all right too.

i'm not really a graphics guy so asking me won't get you the best answer. sorry.

Anyone know if MGS: Portable Ops (NTSC) is compatible yet? I know it isn't directly on the Vita, but I'm hoping it will transfer through the PS3 with this latest batch of compatible games. I have no clue why it doesn't work when the Euro versions work perfectly.

Reposting from the other thread:

I'm looking forward to Retro City Rampage and Jet Set Radio... Although do you get both versions (PS3 and Vita) in just one price (say 9.99) for these games?

I do know Sound Shapes provides you both copies in one price.

Wow I didn't remember I ordered this before it was announced for Euroland (now I will get two).

Gravity Rush is available in some Canadian/US stores.
