Hey, uh, has this ever happened? (McElroy: GAF has actively tried to fool the press)

GAF, as a collective, has never tried to trick the media. Evilore and the mods don't play that shit, and they are very proactive in labeling and calling out fake/BS news threads.

That's been my experience anyway, and I've been on GAF longgggg before McElroy knew it existed, let alone started mining it for news stories.

The recent media trend to badmouth GAF, even though all these badmouthers still actively browse the forum, is pretty hilarious.

Trolling? No, no. I'm simply expediting the process of this thread. Let's be honest, that twitter grab would've been posted eventually.

I'm simply stating that both sides of this argument, Justin and the members here that are getting so riled up (which is not every member, I recognize that fact) over something so trivial.

Some members here took Justin's NeoGAF knock so personally that you might have suspected that they were physically part of the message board.

While Justin doesn't realize that his baseless attacks and previous antics do not represent himself or gaming journalism in a professional manner, and does nothing but to discredit himself.

I find it kind of funny.
Let me make this clear before it goes further: I am not against attacking a monolithic entity such as a forum. It's silly and likely worthy of mocking, but that's not my issue here.

It is when this personal feud with what he considers lesser people due to anonymity allows him the rationalization of whether or not vetting news is a journalist's responsibility is where he loses the plot and I become incensed.

Doubling down on that mentality is sad, but the fundamental problem is not erased simply because crap keeps getting piled on to it.

Can anybody find a link to that thread where McElroy came in practically begging to have Joystiq unbanned from GAF?

Very well said.

Don't use GAF as a source and then complain if the new is not completely legit, if he read two or three posts after the OP he'd see that a lot of people were calling it a fake already. So it is not as if GAF were legitimately trying to fool the media.

Man this guy is still going? He was pretty funny when he was invited to the Giant Bomb podcast but now he's just trying too hard. Saddest/funniest thing is that he was right that GAF has purposefully attempted to fool vidyajournos. :lol But now it has escalated into something else.

I don't know what's more sad, McElroy acting as if GAF was a single entity unworthy of conversation or the mob mentality going on in this thread to attack him.

As if you couldn't hate this little s**tnugget any more.
He's really the posterchild of what's wrong with gaming journalism.

I can't wait till he goes on giant bomb and begins a drunken rant on GAF a la Patcher.

Did Pachter do that? Which bombcast?

I don't think a lot of people are attacking him but just pointing out different prospectives to what is going on. Some others are, of course.

I'd say the latter, as it concerns a greater number of silly brains being silly.

Wow. So rather than coming here and actually engaging with us, he decides to ratchet up the condescension and just makes himself look like even more of a fool in the process. At this point he needs to either engage or shut up, fast, as he's actually damaging the way people view the site he belongs to.

Doesn't he have an active account still? Seriously, it'd take a few posts actually engaging with the audience and this would likely be forgotten

Sheathed insults simply lead to a further 'divide'.

I thought he was all about the love!

I like him enough that I listen to no less than three weekly podcasts which have Justin on, and he's goddamn hilarious in all of them. He comes across as one of the most genuine and thoroughly nice people you'll ever meet. He also made it to Anor Londo in Dark Souls (futher than most games journalists) and wrote a song about it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5yw0wHQx9A

This sort of thing isn't his strong suit though. If you start internet mud-slinging matches though, you are going to get internet all over you.

On a more serious note I feel offended because my credentials don't even stretch to an authenticator.

I do have quite a lot of time logged on Trials Evolution though.

It was the one the night of MS' E3 conference. He showed up in the second half and was downing cans of beer, and randomly bringing up GAF throughout the show. I actually started to feel bad for him, cause you can tell his self-esteem has gotten really low about himself due to comments on GAF. At least under the influence of booze:p

Hey I am a NeoGAF member. Why did nobody let me in on the deception? I want to deceive just like the rest of you. Come on guys.

There are two types of anonymity on the Internet, and this case beautifully exemplifies both: the first one is that which this forum grants its members, the second one is that which a consummate lack of character and dignity provides. It's just as hard to make out a grown-up person behind the second type. I think we're on equal turf here, Mr. McElroy, or should I say: stranger.

I love all the people responding to his Twitter posts with things like "That was suck a SICK burn!", guess what buddy he is insulting people like you just as much as he is insulting GAF.

'@JustinMcElroy Just fucking owned all of the shitty part of the Internet, you all.'
