No question, it's late. It will still be highly disruptive, IMHO.

No because I like using my MBA mostly on my lap when seated in an armchair or on the couch. MS just created the first laptop that you can't use on your lap.

I have and am typing on an iPad with an almost identical stand, and I just checked, you can in fact type comfortably with it on your lap, in theory.

Because you inserted an irrelevant argument into a discussion you weren't even a part of in the first place.
Then why respond to me with a response for someone else.

That makes no sense. If my comments are irrelevant why even address them? Must be relevant enough for your attention.

I'm a proud owner of a TF101. I really do love it... in spite of the build quality. Also in spite of all the ICS issues that have only recently been addressed. I love my TF. I love Android. But I am ready for something new.

This is why some people avoid android tablets. Almost every positive review comes with caveats like these...

The pro needed Windows 8. I honestly don't think it is late because Apple hasn't been able to make significant inroads into the Enterprise users yet. Sure they've made dents but there has not been a wide move in offices.

It's a much easier sell to get those offices into Windows 8 with a portable solution that requires no additional legwork from the IT guys and runs the standard OS.

Had Apple taken a huge, appreciable chunk of that business away I'd say they were late, but that just hasn't happened yet. Launching this before they had their operating system would have been suicide.
I agree!

Because consumers are going to want to use all their favorite Windows programs like WinAMP and mIRC.

I wouldnt worry too much about lack of Metro Apps...Its a windows product, its going to pass Apple in sheer amount of apps in a year. Considering Windows 8 Runs WP7 Apps, they already have a base of 100,000 apps to start from (not including W8 Apps)

I think the Pro is going to be a terrific hit with businesses. Road warriors are going to fucking love it.

I think I am revising up the price points.

If they can do the 499/799 like I predicted, they would have announced the price now.

I am now predicting

499/599 for ARM version (it's Tegra3 btw)
899/999 for the intel version.

That sounds reasonable, if you're including accessories.

well, if by something new, you mean RT, then my condolences. however, if you mean 8Pro, then that's awesome!

I think the kickstand is there to alleviate some of that problem. An ultrabook can't run tablet software, the Pro is trying to be the best of both worlds. That has some appeal, but there are some trade-offs (size, weight, heat, battery life). As excited as I am about the idea of a laptop/tablet hybrid, I have some reservations based on the above. Really have to see and use one of these things to see if the tradeoffs are worth it.

How will the kickstand alleviate anything when you're holding it? That's my point -- if you have to rely on the kickstand and set it on a desk, why not just buy an Ultrabook? All the great tablet software will be designed as if you were holding the device. That's the whole point of owning a tablet. If you're not doing that then... why?

Has anyone mentioned yet that by the time these things hit the market, it's likely that the iPad 4 will already be on the market for 6 months?

Shipping > Announcing.

Edit: The iPad would still be preferable to most consumers if these things were coming out today—next year they'll be even further. This feels a lot more like the iPod & the Zune than anything.

This thread is certainly one of the weirdest GAF has had in a while. So many mixed emotions, people truly don't know how to react when MS reveals something it made that is actually not terrible.

Deep breaths GAF, it'll be okay. We'll all get through this.

What is Geoff keigly talking about??? "nice hardware, where is the content?" doesn't it run basically anything that runs on windows?

They can definitely undercut ultrabook prices, they "save" the cost of licensing, make money on software, so they can sell at break-even or just below on hardware if they wanted to.

They're launching the iPad 4 this year? Wait, 6 months? The iPad 4 already launched?

100%. The fucking hoops I had to jump through to get iPad's for the team I work with was a giant chore. That pro? Hey guys, I need 10 new laptop replacement. Sold.

Cannot wait.

That's fantastic. Windows 8 isn't even out yet. There's no indication about what apps will be there at launch.
App selection is guaranteed to be much less than iPad at win8 launch, which will be in its 4th generation by the time these things come out, and you bet it'll be lighter and thinner with more battery life than iPad 3 even if the specs are the same.

Yeah they did well not to get too bogged down in specs but disappointing that there is no date.

I can understand why they didn't show off the Pro. I've been running Windows 8 on a couple machines for a while and while it's very smooth I have a lot of issues with the very basic apps like Mail and Music.

October of 2013? That's pretty pessimistic dude lord.

These won't come out until September of 2013?

I'd expect RT this October/November and Pro in January, both before the next ipad comes out

Im getting a real 'how much can we fuck the consumer' vibe from the no pricing announcement.. ala Kinect's reveal. If they had a good price in mind they would have said so.

the iPad 4 will likely ship with iOS 6 like it normally does so there isn't a great deal of change coming

It's not like they're going to announce some crazy new product that changes everything.... right?

The iPad 4 comes out when, next March? So you;'re saying Surface won't be released until September 2013?

Or do people still think Apple will release two versions of the iPad in 2012.

iPad 4 won't be out till next year. Apple is like clockwork with these things. Windows 8 releases in a few months. I think RT releases before Windows 8 actually.

You're saying these products are more than a year away. Which is bullshit.

lol? Metro is going to pass the Apple App store in a year?

Considering Windows 8 Runs WP7 Apps, they already have a base of 100,000 apps to start from (not including W8 Apps)
what do regular Windows apps have to do with Metro apps, which are wholly different applications?

and you're aware those 100,000 apps don't work on ARM, right?

6 months was a stretch. I should have said up to 6 months. Apologies.

My guess is the RT will hit late next winter (march).

I think the Pro is going to be a heat, battery, and fan disaster and riddled with delays until late next summer.

So now we're already speculating that the iPad 4 will be out before Windows 8, even though the iPad 3 came out 3 months ago?

o....k

Again, why do you keep going on and on about the iPad and its app selection? It's completely irrelevant to what I'm talking about. I was merely commenting on what someone else said, about Windows 8 vs. Windows RT.

If Windows RT is the "tard" version, then what is an iPad?

(answer: the iPad is an immensely capable device, and so will Windows RT be an immensely capable OS, even if it doesn't have backwards compatibility)

I didn't say it was the tard version. I said its not the real showstopper. Nice try though.

Look back through my posts if you want to. I never said that. The cool features are all in the pro though native full windows 8 support and stylus support.
I swear, whenever you post I think you're Kanye. No joke.

I have nothing to complain about with this thing so I am going to completely make shit up! Must go don black turtleneck

the thought of running steam on the pro version is already making me smile. i just got my first tablet computer yesterday (my bro and wife gave me their old ipad 1) and i'm enjoying playing a few tablet games, reading e comics, and checking mail and light browsing, but man full windows desktop os on a tablet get me very excited. won't have to go through my convoluted process of transferring my cbr and cbz files, getting them organized and viewing them on an app, with the surface, just drag and drop from my pc, and open them up with comic rack
