Haha...this thread is great.

Will this tablet really have the beef to play any game you want? And again, do you think the keyboard will be gaming quality? I get the appeal of being able to install Steam, I just question the practicality of actually playing Steam games on it.

I'm sure it can handle a usb controller but I know that's not preferable for some games.

What will be more confusing is that RT comes with MS Office installed. Pro will require what, an extra $150 for MS Office Home edition?

The average version of Office sells for well south of $100. Plus, you can just use the license for the Office you already have. The home and student version (that you get for $60 some odd dollars online) comes with 3 device license.

You should've pointed out that it's just Topolsky TALKING about the Surface rather than a hands on or an exclusive up close view or anything anyone would actually want to watch.

Yeah I'd like to know more about the Pro being a potential laptop replacement, but I don't know if that's really what they're shooting for.

What is the price on the Windows Marketplace?

Probably some but definitely not all. I doubt that thing is packing a i7 w/ 670m in there lol.

It'll play games as well as any underclocked HD4000 gpu will. I'd look into the newest MBA's running windows as a reference and probably subtract 20-30% or so to fit the thermal envelope of the tablet form factor.

Anyone happen to know a proven/well reviewed ultrabook that's actually acceptable for gaming? I'd like to check out specs but I haven't been in the laptop game for years.

If they were serious about gaming on the Pro MS would throw a 360 wireless receiver in that bad boy. Or at least make one no larger than those little USB stubs that come with wireless mice.

I think you owe Ballmer an apology. I think the last time you spoke of him was pretty (hilariously) hateful. He killed it! Plus he gave us Mega Man shops

Ballmer will never get apologies. That is just how it is.

I does look like he lost a bunch of weight though, good for him. He still looks like *your high school football coach.

That would be amazing. Right now I just shuttle the dongle with my laptop. Doable but annoying

is Windows RT ( for ARM based processors) in anyway different from Windows 8 ?

You can only run METRO Apps in Windows RT. You can run both Metro Apps and Regular-ass computer applications on Windows 8.

It's like asking if there's a difference between iOS and MacOS (to put in terms that everybody will understand)

well it's an i5 + HD4000 graphics with 64GB-120GB of SSD storage. unknown amount of memory. It's also running standard windows and has a USB input (that you can attach a USB hub to)

You can do normal computing tasks as you can with any Windows i5 laptop with integrated graphics.

You'll want to hook up a BT keyboard and mouse for serious computing work, I'd think. But yea.

And keep in mind, this will be true of all Windows 8-based tablets. It's redundant, but it's good to mention that this isn't the only Windows 8 tablet coming out. Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and everyone else will be making one too. Some with detachable keyboards like the the Asus Transformer. Some have a screen that swivels around for tablet mode.

Some will be more powerful than this one...or have more battery life than this one. No reason to sell yourself on any of them before seeing all the options...and by the time this device comes out in February or March of 2013, there should be some serious fucking competitors.

Microsoft always sells different versions of Windows, and has trained the public to know this. Like Windows 7 Home Premium edition and Windows 7 Ultimate.
I see what you did there. But really, MS can't fuck up how they explain the differences here or there will be hell to pay.

that would be a nice feature considering their hardware, like the Arc mouse and stuff, uses the same wireless connection technology (i.e not bluetooth)

just put a sync button the thing and let people pair their game pads and peripherals to it.

Because that's where I think most Windows 8/RT tablet users will be going for their apps.

Oh I see, you're just going to play the stupid card now. I thought you were actually going to engage in honest discussion, but you want to try to make sense of your initial post by ignoring the fact that Pro owners have access to their previously bought software and have access to lower priced software by pretending that they won't bother to look, therefore it's a $150 cover charge for Office regardless to make it seem like a terrible thing. Gotcha.

Microsoft did a great job confusing consumers. This thread is case and point. People think the RT version can run all their favorite x86 apps. It can't. Also the RT version seems not to support a stylus either.
I trolling hard ... and to make it more effective when I use BOLD

MAYBE NEXT TIME I'LL USE ALL CAPS. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?!!?!?

The non-pro is not 1080p. MS advertises it as "HD" screen whereas the Pro is "Full HD"
And yes, it's a shit screen compared to the 2048x1536 IPS panel of the iPad.
Shit? lol

I have a Transformer which is similar resolution and size. Is it and iPad 3? No, but's it's hardly shit ... and is certainly better than iPad 1/2.

I agree. My concern about RT is...what is it bringing beyond Office that makes it more attractive for the price than the competition? Starting from scratch with the Microsoft Store means they'll have decidedly less available software for it than the Android/Apple tablets. So why buy it? I'm not sure either.
I think it will catch up much faster than any other platform has.

The genious behind WinRT is that it's in both Windows RT and in Windows 8. That's not just tablets, but in laptops and desktops as well. Once Windows 8 hits, it will be the only packed in OS available for consumer PC. That gives it an instant userbase. And considering the Windows Store is for WinRT, there will be tons of devs releasing apps for it. It's the first time there's been a unified store for Windows. Since that has great advantages for discovery, devs are quite intrigued when you factor in everything.

(not that this is ever going to happen, I don't think MS has any interest in mingling Xbox and Windows in that fashion.. quite the opposite really)
You might want to read up on the plans for Windows 8 along with the overall Windows ecosystem.

If all XBLA games came out for Windows 8, and they worked on the base tablet with an Xbox controller I'd buy one.
