Apple refuses to sell Ipads to American-Iranian citizens

I get that, but the decision was made by the store manager, not Apple as an entity.
You worded it in a way like it was Apple policy not to sell to Ir.-Americans and therefore your title sucks.

As the manager of the Apple Store guess who he represents?

I do know that a lot of Iranians would come into electronics stores here in Canada, specifically to resell them on the Iranian black market.

I think that has a lot more to do with it, rather than just "oh we don't like Iranians".

Obviously when you put it in blunt racial terms like that.. shit's gonna go sour. It's a lot like the Ikea/Gypsy thing.
Yes, but like the IKEA/Traveler thing, it's still racist discrimination. There isn't justification for it.

This really does suck, however doesn't Apple have the right to refuse service to anyone for whatever reason? Just playing Devil's advocate here, and agree that Apple could have handled this better.

I believe the Civil Rights Act makes it illegal for things such as this.

wail, thts guuuuuddddd danit it 2 hell. we dunt need no fuckin muslim islam-communist un godchristian fuck tryin to buy our computurs to kill us wit.

FUCK THEM!

The video itself says it's Apple policy.

Stop trying to pretend to be oblivious. The policy is about the exportation of goods. Which is the policy of every American retailer. The employee was an idiot and didn't follow the policy.

A manager showed Channel 2 Action News Apple's policy. It said the exportation, sale or supply from the U.S. to Iran of any Apple goods is strictly prohibited without authorization by the U.S. government. The manager also says they have to rely on customers to be honest.
Valid policy that is very standard for all retailers. what the manager did had nothing to do with this policy, the manager was being an idiot.

Yeah he is a fanboy, I've noticed over the past few months he just looks for excuses to post anti-Apple nonsense. This issue in the topic is valid though.

Lol, ok. So a racist policy of not selling to American citizens who happen to be of Iranian descent is nonsense? What world are you from?

Nice edit.

Apple is not travelling to Iran with laptops or satellite cellphones, and it is not part of the gov't policy to refuse sale of said devices based on a suspicion that this may happen.

When I bought a laptop a few weeks ago I was asked if I planned to take it out of the country or ship it overseas. When I asked why I was told by Best Buy that it is against the law to sell certain types of computer equipment if it will be taken out of the country.

I am pretty sure Iran is not the only Middle East country that speaks Farsi

I don't even know what the point of this line of thinking is, and maybe there are small pockets in Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, or Iraq, but the vast majority of those who speak Farsi in the Middle East are from Iran.

So a manager does something stupid, and it's company policy?

Also, my home state looking good again.

The irony here with the lead in the WSB2 story is that WSB is super conservative.

Thanks they stopped Iran getting that iPad. With that plan foiled, there's simply no other way they can obtain them.

Why is there an issue with taking electronics back to Iran?

It's new sanctions that our government have placed against Iran and Syria back in April.
NY Times Article

WASHINGTON — President Obama moved to tighten sanctions on Syria and Iran on Monday by taking aim at those who provide their authoritarian governments with technology to track down dissidents for abuse, torture or death.

The measures underscored the role that computers, social media and cellphones have played in the recent political upheavals in the Middle East, not just in organizing resistance to entrenched leaders, but also in helping security services crack down on protesters. The president’s action is meant to put on notice individuals and companies that provide the technology that enables human rights abuses.

Smh Apple.

Tell me what did APPLE do. Their policy is standard and set for basically every American retailer. A idiot employee misread it and stupidly turned away a customer.

If a dumb Wal-Mart manager shot a customer would you call it "WAL-MART SHOOTS A CUSTOMER"? Of course not.

Topic isn't nonsense but he will post anything anti-Apple. Nonsense or otherwise. Usually made up garbage.
Dude your coming off as more of a fanboy for remembering that he posted it. If you haven't notice he pretty much posts anything he thinks is news worthy. He makes tons of threads.

Yes, but like the IKEA/Traveler thing, it's still racist discrimination. There isn't justification for it.

Of course.

It's perfectly fair for Apple not to want to sell to black market resellers, and it's perfectly fair for Ikea not to want parking lot squatters.

But, it's imprecise and racist to make it about "Iranians" and "Gypsys".. Even if those ethnic groups often fit the profile of those who participate in such things, you've got to go about things in a way that doesn't make presumptions. That's a no brainer.

Besides, even if we weren't afraid of making racial judgements (and we should be), there are so many Iranians living in the west, that to presume they are all resellers is not even close to a smart profiling.

If those silly browns would just whiten up they'd be free to enjoy Steve's plentiful bounty!

Interesting sidenote - Steve Jobs' father was Syrian. I guess he would be banned from buying his own company's products?

I don't get asked any of these questions when ordering Apple stuff from their online store. Sounds like a Best Buy policy, not a government one. Or maybe it was another under-informed employee, natch.

I've also posted how I'm torn between the iphone 5 and Galaxy S3, and also commented on how good that iphone 5 mockup (while fake) looked. But feel free to ignore those.

That doesn't mean your topic isn't sensationalist (and not taken from the link) and plain factually incorrect. This isn't Apple policy. This is a dumb apple employee misreading policy followed by all American retailers following the new Iran exportation restrictions.

The fact people are referring to some sort of "racist policy" proves that pretty much no one reads links in topics. If they did they'd realize quickly the OP got it wrong about this being Apple policy.

"A representative for the U.S. State Department says it is illegal to travel to Iran with laptops or satellite cellphones without U.S. authorization."

They're just following the rules, I guess.

hearing someone speak a foreign language is not definitive proof someone is from or planning on returning to any specific country.

As much as I do enjoy seeing Apple get knocked down a peg every now and then, this is really about a dumb store manager misunderstanding an Apple policy.

Thanks they stopped Iran getting that iPad. With that plan foiled, there's simply no other way they can obtain them.

It's actually hilarious because the main electronics chain in Canada, Future Shop, was started by an Iranian-Canadian, and still has a very large Iranian workforce. I think Iranians have an in to get iPads if they want, lol.

Iranians often aren't that brown... They're not Arabian. But I digress.

People jump at everything to attack Apple.

Idiot employee misunderstands standard retail policy? APPLE AS A CORPORATIONS HATES IRANIAN AMERICANS.

This isn't just some random sales drone. It's the manager of their retail store in a major city. And per the story it happened at two separate locations - Perimeter Center and North Point.

Shit, I didn't even see that this happened at the Perimeter location as well.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised about my home state in certain instances......

Yeah, seems like shinobi is getting the reactions he was looking for.

What are you implying?

Some kind of company wide conspiracy against Iranian Americans?

Yeah, seems like shinobi is getting the reactions he was looking for.

Most people aren't aware of the prohibition of sales between Iran/US.

I was surprised when Schmidt had to ask his lawyer how to answer a question about expanding google services to Iran during a conference earlier in the year.

There is a non "full-fledged" Farsi and Apple store employees are trained to figure that out?

Lol. major city retail manager people. Major. City. It's basically like Obama spoke

I'm not implying anything. People keep saying "herp derp it's just some employee derpa lerp" and I'm pointing out that's wrong on two levels. It's not just a rank and file employee and it's not the only time it's happened.

But it IS just some employee. There is no Apple policy prohibiting the sale of goods to Iranian Americans or even Iranians. There IS a federal policy against any company knowingly selling to someone who will export goods to Iran.

Dont know what youre point is. Theres managers, and then theres retail managers.. which are just regular employees with maybe a $2 raise in pay.
