The new leaked images of the Dell XPS look nice.

Seens like the graphics cards will be the gt630m and gt640m.

thats a bit of a shame. According to notebookcheck, the 640m is basically a rebadged 540m. Would have hoped for at least an option of 650m which is a nice jump

640M is Kepler, 540M is Fermi. 640M is faster than the 555M and almost as fast as the GTX 460M.

By raising the core clock of 640M (625mhz) to 650M (735mhz+), you just turned it into a 650M. Similarly, by raising the core clock of 640M LE (500mhz) to 640M (625mhz), you just turned it into a 640M. Does anybody know if you are allowed to OC Nvidia mobile GPUs? I don't know if this is BIOS-restricted or not by laptop manufacturers, and if so, if you can unlock it. It's also best not to set your laptop on fire, or at least make it overheat until it throttles or shuts down.

Mobile GPU numbering is like alphabet soup. AMD/ATI are just as bad.

Overclocking mobile GPUs is just as easy as doing it with desktops, same programs and everything. I don't recall every coming across a machine with which the manufacturer had purposely hard locked the ability.
I've heard the HP Envy 17's Radiance panel doesn't have this problem.

The 17's screen was not an IPS.

Thanks for the information guys.
I don't really know what an IPS is, but I was hoping something similar to my ASUS monitor which has LED backlight (?). I mainly need a higher resolution than the 1366x768(?).

I guess I meant to say resolution more than a screen, because I don't need high-end screen.

Thanks.

I also ordered a 128GB SSD drive from Newegg (already have in my possession). My body is ready.

R.I.P Sony Vaio. Perfectly good laptop. But doesn't cut it anymore for gaming.

A GeForce 670 should be enough. If it can run Battlefield 3 on high settings with a fluid framerate, I'll live.

It seems like the stupid low framerates are because the game is running on ultra settings. I'm not going to be missing any graphical greatness by going to high settings, am I?

Everyone has different priorities. My priority was a good IPS screen after staring at this terrible screen on my T400 for too many years. I already have a gaming PC which I play while sitting on my comfy couch since it's connected to an HDTV. I wouldn't use a laptop as a primary gaming PC anyways.

Do you have sound set up through your receiver?

Do you have sound set up through your receiver?

Yeah. Many PC games don't properly support multi-channel sound though, even the ones ported from consoles. I'm looking at you, Gears of War for Windows.

Diablo III works in 5.1 though, and the cutscenes are even properly encoded so dialogue is heard through the center channel. This is rare enough that hearing it happen actually surprised me.

Hmm. That's good to know. Even console ports, eh? Will have to look into whether Max Payne 3 has 5.1.

How do you do it? Optical cable via sound card or motherboard?

Sound card? What century is this?

I run HDMI from my GTX 470 to the receiver, and the receiver connects to the TV via HDMI. Both Nvidia and AMD/ATI have built-in HD Audio on their video cards.

Hey... he's excited for his new acquisition, no need to be a downer.

What's GAF's veredict on the ASUS g75vw with a 660m gtx? Can it play most games? High-ish settings?

If I were going to get an Asus G75 I would get a model with a gtx 670M (around $1449). A gtx 660M already plays most games pretty well, but you can get it in cheaper laptops like MSI laptops, or if you want Asus, a G55(around $1299) which is also a very good laptop, but not as big as the G75.

But if you do not care about brand I recommend : for 15"this or for 17.3" this ; that let you choose the graphic card.

Free PS3 or Vita with a Sony VAIO laptop at the moment.

I'm eyeing the VAIO S15 with the i7-3612QM 2.10 ghz, 15.5" IPS 1080p screen and GT 640M LE. It looks like the poor man's Macbook Pro, and the screen has a sane resolution. Sorry, I don't the buy the hype about Retina Display on a laptop that every app won't make any use of except for Apple's own, plus I doubt Windows will benefit from it.

Can this thing run games pretty decently at the native 1920x1080 resolution? Mobile GPUs are a mystery to me, so I have no idea where GT 640M LE fits in the mobile GPU hierarchy of power.

edit: Okay fine, so I'm not COMPLETELY lazy:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-640M-LE.72199.0.html

So it's 20% lower clocked GT 640M. I wonder if you can OC it back to the standard GT 640M's speed and not set the laptop on fire. Too bad nothing there can tell me shit about how well it will run Diablo III. Anybody has a laptop with this GPU and can tell me?

"So, I redid my Diablo III test on my S13 Premium and my low FPS was due to running DxTory(Similar to FRAPS) in the background. I used the built in FPS monitor in D3 and was getting ~40 FPS in combat and 60 idle with everything set to max and 1600X900 resolution with AA on.

Also, I think the speakers sound great. They are not able to get too loud, but the max loudness is still clear unlike many laptop speakers"

I installed Catalyst 12.3 WHQL UnifL for Switchable Graphics (manufacturer's driver supports sucks) and v-sync finally works! No more tearing! :D

Now to read about this D3DOverrider business.

This is some hardcore imagery.

What are you talking about? I can't remember a pc game not having 5.1. You can enable 5.1 in gears through the .ini.

I'm aware of forcing 5.1 in Gears using the .ini, it breaks a lot of things in the audio. Which is why it's disabled by default I'm sure.

Very few PC games actually properly support 5.1 and direct dialogue to the center channel like a movie does. Diablo III is actually the only one I can think of off the top of my head from the past few years. Many console games do it right, why can't PC games?

I had a thought. I was really close to pulling the trigger on a Sager with the 7970 card. But I was wondering how prevalent "PhysX" enabled games will be in the coming years?

7970 is quite impressive, but if the card has zero physics support and "PhysX" has become the default standard for including physics in your games, doesn't that make the ATI card possibly inferior even with a higher framerate?

How important is PhysX?

Wow these Sager laptops look great for the money....

Good brand? I havn't bought a laptop in about 4 years, and my last one wasn't very top of the line even then.

It's a dead product.

PhysX used to be a dedicated physics card that would use a PCIE slot. The issue is that games had to support the feature in order to actually use the card. You had very few games supporting the card and when they were bought by Nvidia, it was rolled into the main GTX line.

Right now, it's used as a small bonus when you use a Nvidia card. If I remember correctly, Batman Arkham City had some fancy papers flying around if you had an Nvidia card.

So no, a Nvidia card is not worth it just because of PhysX. It's just a gimmick so far.

Yeah they're pretty good. Not paying for a prestigeous name at all, so the fact that they have been successful without you really hearing of them is actually a good thing. It means they do really build quality laptops and have a dedicated consumer following. I've bought a few Sagers and they've all been great quality at a competitive price for the specs.

If the Sager laptop has the option for a 2nd Hard drive, will the bay be there even if I don't order a 2nd one through them? Have a SSD from my current laptop.

Yeah I have a Samsung and love it, looked for another one and I certainly get more bang for the buck if I go through Sager. You have to pay and arm and a leg to get a real graphics chip on brand names ones these days it seems.

It also appears to overclock like a champ.

I received my Envy 17 a few days ago. It handles Wii emulation admirably and it's done well with Shogun 2 Total War, Diablo 3, and Battlefield 3 all on fairly high settings at native resolution. I've had a few rough patches but I'm confident better drivers will smooth out the wrinkles in the near future; I don't think official 7xxx Mobility drivers are even available yet on the AMD website.

With the 33% coupon, now recently expired unfortunately, this laptop was a steal as far as I'm concerned.

Nice, mine is Wed. Can't wait.

What are you doing to get the OS onto the SSD? I've heard about cloning. I should order from NewEgg today.

Few Sager questions.

I have never seen a "30 day pixel warranty". Is it a problem with them? What's their return policy, and couldn't I just return it and order a new one if there are dead pixels?

I'm looking at the NP6165, are there any must have upgrades? I am thinking of upgrading the standard i5 to the i7-3610QM, seems worth it for just 470 more.

Is the upgraded screen worth it?

Installing W7 as we speak.

I ordered a single hard drive as well. On my P170. The second bay is located under the disk drive. It was super easy moving the 750GB hd to make room for my SSD.

I already own a copy of W7. So I'm doing a fresh install of the OS onto the SSD.
I went with the Crucial M4 128GB.

Maybe someone can help me out, but I'm sure you guys are tired from requests. Looking for a gaming/work laptop. I mostly work in Nuke/After Effects but not huge projects, I just want to option to run those effectively and render if needed. I also want to play current/future titles at a decent resolution. I know a desktop would be ideal but I'm more on the go these days.

Always upgrade the screen.

I don't think any Sager/Clevo laptops offer IPS screens, so just upgrade to the best available one. It will still be TN but the viewing angles should be acceptable for a single viewer directly in front of the screen.

So i've had my current laptop since 2008 (Toshiba Qosmio X305), and it is primarily a gaming laptop. It used to be able to run starcraft 2 and other games on low settings, but now 5 minutes into a game, no matter what the settings are, it crashes. Just completely crashes to a black screen. I can't even play minecraft or halo 2 vista for more than 5 minutes.

For reference, here are my stats compared to the minimum you need for halo 2 vista

What could I do to fix this? I've updated all of my drivers and it still hasn't fixed the problem. And as you can see in the picture I posted, I passed every requirement to be able to play the game.

Buy a can of air duster, loot your room for a sturdy box that's about 1 inch high, clean every single hole you can find on your laptop with the air duster, and then instead of laying the laptop flat put the box under the edge at the back, so that there's room under your laptop. I've had similar issues with BF:BC2 and this worked like charm - the issue comes back maybe twice a year, and the air duster always fixes things for me.

Possible OS/registry issue? When was the last time you had a clean install?

Good. I went with the build I posted a few posts ago. Think I will be happy with it. Could have done without the fingerprint reader, but they had no other 15" screen option with the dual hard drive option but that set up.

What did it come with, a oem disk or a re install disk?

OEM

Just a heads up about the 7970M. Very unstable drivers. The drivers that Celvo ships cause black/blue screens, and the beta drivers aren't much better. I can no longer access Catalyst.
I hope this gets resolved soon. Otherwise the card is a beast. I'm able to max out The Witcher 2 (ubersampling and blur off). Also the speakers on the P170 are much better than expected. Doubt I'll use them much though.

Oh boy.

There's a reason why I pay the small premium for Nvidia products, and drivers are a huge part of that reason.

Technically there are no official drivers for it.

I got Catalyst working again by installing the Celvo drivers. However, the Celvo drivers don't perform as well. With their drivers game performance is hit or miss.

Sweet, just got my SSD in the mail from Amazon (love Amazon Prime, bought it on Monday, got it on Tuesday), and the laptop should be here today. I'll just reinstall on the SSD.

W7 is preinstalled, right?

I'm guessing no new drivers for the 7970?
