The show really has surprised me with the tone at times. You have fanservice characters such as Elena then talk of genocide and seeing people being killed in the next episode. The series feels like it has an identity crisis at times which is a shame as when they focus on a serious and darker story, they can really be good at it. You can definitely feel Aikawa's hand throughout this episode due to how political this show is and even character interactions. The fact that a PR company is running GenBlue reinforces the notion that the politics component of the show is indeed here to stay and will atleast be a running theme or motivation throughout.
Let me get my mini-rant with Truth out of the way. He's really becoming a boring villain on multiple levels. The first is that his dialogue is all cryptic bullshit that he continuously spouts without giving any new insight. He's obviously designed as a character who in hindsight will make more sense but as it stands, he's quickly becoming annoying with his whole cloak-and-dagger routine. He feels like a character that Lindelof would write. Another problem is how ridiculously overpowered he is. He never feels like a credible threat because of how powerful he is. Yes that sounds like an oxymoron but let me explain. When the villain can easily wipe out the entire cast of characters but doesn't do it or even attempt to on a repeated basis then they lose that threat level. How is a man supposed to fight a god? That's a problem with the series is that there isn't anyone who directly challenges Ao like Anemone in the original series did to Eureka/Renton. I also still hate his design although it looks acceptable when they actually put money into it but when they don't, it looks atrocious.
Now for the meat of the episode. Great character development on the part of Ao. We finally see a new reaction from him. Fear. Now before someone states why this hasn't happened earlier, like when he first started fighting, remember that he's defenseless in this situation in a way he's really never been before. He's completely unarmed and also getting a very upclose view of people dying with the very real possibility that he's next. Throughout the series up to this point, we've seen him with bravado even up against seemingly impossible odds but when he's completely helpless, he breaks. I think this was a great reaction as most kids(and adults) would have freaked out as well. Let me state this very clearly, he's a much better protagonist than Renton ever was. His decision to run with the tent is something his father would be proud of, not only on the stupidity level which Renton was prone to do but also the courage component as well. It also showed a relatively decent level of smarts, something the show and characters have been missing for the most part. It's a truly worthy moment of badass compiled with his speech at the end to the civilians and really acting like a leader. I was almost as shocked as Ivica was in regards to how mature Ao really is for a character his age, not to mention a character his age in anime.
Time for Ivica, the star of the episode. He's a much more complicated character and along with Ao, truly are the highlight of the series. It's really amazing how character quality can vary in this show when we have characters like Ivica, Ao, and Rebecca along with shallow characters like Naru, Elena, and Truth for the time being. It really brings up his dynamic with the company in that he's working with the devil in order to make the world a better place. I have no idea how hard it must be to work for the company who helped eliminate your friends and family. The line about him being a father as well highlights his father role in Pied Piper and shows how he's trying to protect his new family as compensation for the one he lost. This episode also shows how conflicted he is about everything especially in regards to children fighting his battles for him. Ivica also seems slightly suicidal(possibly a trait in all commanders as seen by the prior leader of Goldilocks) demonstrated by him pulling out the rocket launcher and going toe to toe with a Secret.
Rebecca is also a much more interesting character now too. We now know who is pulling the string behind GenBlue, some PR company(weirdly enough), and she's working for them. This also adds a layer to her work at GenBlue and her interactions with Ivica in general. Although they weirdly implied that Ivica while knowing she worked for the PR company, doesn't know she was heavily(I guess) responsible for his country being wiped. A great scene with her was she pointed the gun directly at the Governor's genitalia. This worked fairly well as I'm sure other people thought as I did, that she was going to have to seduce/have sex with him in order to make him sign the contract. This was reinforced with the Governor touching her shoulder and I thought they were going to go in that direction but reversing that and putting her back in a position of power really reinforced her character in a way that it took 30+ episodes for Talho to achieve.
There was some excellent visuals and symbolism in this episode as well.
This one reminded me of the Pied Piper story in that Ao was leading the others in a uniform manner and movement. Confirmed at the end with Ivica saying how the children were the Pipers.
