Wada: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Topped

That's probably the biggest reason why it hasn't happened yet. The original apparently cost over 40m to develop, so a remake at that scale would have a monstrous budget.

Wait the original cost 40mil in 1997 money to develop? Holy crap! That must have been the most expensive game ever made during that time!

Yeah we're definitely not gonna see a remake anytime soon. Oh well...

I'm curious to know: How old are those who think FF7 has been topped since its creation, versus those who do not?

25. It was topped by VIII and then IX. Love em all. XII was great, but doesn't quite top VII for me.

I still say you need to go full on next gen expensive take on VII or go with the straight up remake with pre-rendered backgrounds for Vita (or whatever I don't know). Kind of like Mega Man 9, but with PSone era RPG's.

Yeah, FFIX was better. Maybe if they remade some of the good 3D Final Fantasies they'd remember how to make an overworld.

29. Been topped by IX and X

Not to mention other SE RPGS as well titles made by other developers.

FFVII just wasn't that good to begin with.

Basically he's saying that remaking FF7 now would be a clear admission that the glories of the franchise are in its past.

Of course that's what happens when you dilute the shit out of your brand and make it so that the people that gave the most shit about your franchise have long since moved on (i.e. you continue to market to the teenage crowd when the original teenagers that made the franchise as successful as it was have all grown up).

But that's a problem that exists not in a vacuum - but because western and eastern gaming culture varies; people don't stop gaming in the west, but they do in the east - and is naturally seen as a pursuit for the young there.

Are there really people that aren't blinded by first FF nostalgia that DON'T like 9 better than 7? 7 felt like trash at the time, and only looks good because of what garbage Square has put out since (aside from a few gems of course).

And to answer, I'm 29.

This is absolutely fine by me. Honestly, even if they actually went ahead and made a remake with all the shiny bells and whistles I still wouldn't rush out and buy it, let alone play it.

In fact, I believe I never really got the urge to revisit the original back in the day. It was an enjoyable experience for its time, which I do not regret, but I've basically moved on and so has the Final Fantasy series, for better and for worse.

I thought 9's battle system was very slow and the materia system is still my favorite of the series. 9 was good, but I still prefer 7's gameplay.

I usually make the joke "Logic? In my Final Fantasy? Get outta here." when talking about anything that happens in an FF game. I think I can use this joke for some stuff Wada does or says now. :lol (Edit: I realize that this can be taken both ways--I mean that he's being surprisingly logical about this.)

24. I think Final Fantasy IX epitomizes exactly what Final Fantasy is to me. Plus I think FFVII has been topped by other RPGs from other developers in general (and apparently also by XII and X-2 if I reference that old post I linked).

However, that doesn't stop FFVII from being fun at all.

And FFI was my first FF. I can't remember what my first RPG was, though. I want to say Dragon Quest I, but I don't think that's right at all...

Maybe he's thinking a universal acclaim or even based on fan reactions? Final Fantasy VII is probably one of the more recognizable in the series and has a huge fan following.

I'm not saying it's the best, nor the worst. Those terms are all relative to whomever is judging. I personally think they all have their own special places. Except XIII, which should have not been made, but I guess it's place is last then. Hrm, there goes my argument.

29. Final Fantasy VII was surpassed by VIII and then that was surpassed by XII. V is my overall favorite. Still have my boxed sufami copy and the OST. X is the lowpoint, imo.

Between the clunky script and the poor graphics, I do think VII is the one FF game that could really benefit from a remake. Instead, they keep tiptoeing around it with spin offs and animated films :l

Does he mean sales or gameplay...? IX and X were great gameplay wise and they just said XI was the most profitable.

The story was a little weird in VII, too.

Wada is the ultimate troll, there have been several better Final Fantasy titles since.

If they ever got around to fixing up VII, that would lead me to next wish for a IX that doesn't have a broken ass wait battle system that detracts from the rest of the greatness of the game.

At least my expectations for an FFVII remake actually happening are much more reasonable.

Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII. If they were to release a 7 remake right now, the FF franchise would be done with, he said.

Is he implying that Versus XIII will be crap?

Oh and X exceeded in VII overall except sales. But yeah, that's just my opinion.

Ok, i'll be that guy:

So how is FFIX better than FFVII exactly? It doesn't have a better battle system or growth system, it doesn't have better side quests, it doesn't have better villains or a better story, the cast is largely boring/forgettable except for ViVi/Zidane, and it doesn't have a better soundtrack. FFIX has a more beautiful world perhaps( it definitely has some excellent locales) but I feel lke FFVII's is more atmospheric and absorbing. Also, FF7 has some of the most memorable moments in the entire series, not to mention outstanding summon sequences. FFIX has none of that.

Come at me

FF6 was my first FF, yet 7 is still my favorite in the series by a good country mile.

After answering that question did any shareholder ask how fast they could replace Wada and the other execs?

Seriously they have needed a change up there for a long time now, over everything not just this.
