Wada: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Topped

FFVIII was the biggest mess, but it still had more charm and quality points than FFXIII by far. And outside of the core mechanics of the battle system, I can't see where it was relevantly worse. FFIX had a really-slow paced battle system, but it was overall a very complete game.

After FFX, FFX-2 offered cool gameplay at the expense of everything else. FFXIII-2 was more or less the same. FFXII was more or less the same, but its gameplay was quite dividing. And FFXIII scrapped its own gameplay at the expense of an even worse story.

And FFXIV started as a huge failure.

Yes, Wada is right, and this is probably one of the best things he could have said as SE's President. It shows he's aware that the quality of recent titles hasn't been as high as what we'd expect from the creators of FFVII.

So you're agreeing with me then.

22 here. Has FF7 been topped? My opinion is yes, by 12.

However, I'm also of the opinion that there should not be a remake; it's possible to play the old game and reminisce, without needing HD graphics and whatnot, because any remake with come with inevitable changes that result in the fanbase castigating the product anyway.

If there is ever an SE game to come out that is universally lauded as above and beyond FF7, then by default there is already no reason to remake 7—the new product would deserve more attention and resources.

Wada is smart. His statement basically means the more you defend FFVII, the less likely a remake will be made...lol

Wada: "Please don't look forward to it."

Way to go, Wada. Not only do you dismiss the three main FF's under your watch (FFXI, XII, & XIII), but also the three fantastic games released before your crazy ass showed up (FFVIII, IX, and X), as being 'not as good'.

Assclown.
I'm upset the shareholders didn't throw cabbages and tomatoes at him.

...

Also, the FFIX fans are getting out of hand around here. Go watch The Dark Crystal, Muppets in Space, or something. :D

I'm curious to know: How old are those who think FF7 has been topped since its creation, versus those who do not?

25. XIII was my first FF (I know I know) then played the rest backwards (currently on III). So without having that nostalgia most people have towards VII (Xenosaga was my first rpg and has a fond place in my heart) I couldn't help wishing for at least a moderately updated VII during my playthrough. I really enjoyed the story and characters of VII but starting rpgs in the ps2 era I find I have been spoiled and can't immerse myself into ps1 games as much for some reason. So weird Wada statement aside, come on square enix and remake it already! You can do it before I'm 40. I know you can. Think of all your newer ff fans who need it.

What makes me sad is that a Chrono Sequel is now proven to be more far-fetched than a Final Fantasy VII remake.

Makes me a very sad panda.

If you look at it from a managing POV, FFVII is their Trump Card, Square Enix fans basically subconciously hate them for their terrible iterations so far, yet the only thing holding them together as a fanbase is that nostalgia of older FFs. The moment a remake is made, that nostalgic glue loses it's pull.

Nothing has surpassed FFVII, only graphical improvements, and possibly the combat, but the Materia System has great potential for improvement overall.

FFXIII-3 is just a deathwish for a franchise as far as I am concerned. I recommend they cancel and work on FFXV.

The longer they wait, the lower the anticipation will be.

The opportunity cost will be seen in the sales. The older I get, the less i care about a remake. Older gamers, are at the verge of not caring.

The sooner Squares does it the more money they will make. The longer they wait, the more likely the remake will flop.

People have been clamoring for a remake for two generations now. I don't think this is true at all.

I think Wada makes perfect sense here. SE isn't making RPGs as good as they have in the past. I wouldn't want this current SE to remake FF7 either. They need to make sure their next few releases are amazing in order to inspire confidence again. If SE were to announce an FF7 remake were underway right now, I would think it'd come out shitty as FF13. That's not what I want to think if/when it is announced.

I liked FFVII a lot when I first played it, and wouldn't mind seeing a remake, but I have to admit that it's been surpassed several times before and since: FFVI, VIII, IX, XII.

I'm 36 this year BTW.

I'm 24 and FFVII has it's own special place in my heart, like the other entries.

P.S. That's my second post in Gaf, so thanks for having me :D

Your avatar indicates that another game has a special place in your heart too -- a very well-deserved place. Forget a FFVII remake; I want Matsuno Masterpiece IV (I, II, and III being FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, and FFXII, respectively).

Some will be hitting there 40's soon and others more.

That audience is lost. They don't care anymore. We are just starting to see the oldest generation of gamers, giving up gaming. This is part of the audience. The younger generation doesn't care, they want more FPS and American games.

Do not understand the IX love. The agonizingly slow ATB (menu option doesn't do much) and the long pause between selection and action make battles an exercise in tedium.

I used to love IX, but in recent years it's become much clearer that VII was the superior game by a mile.

I don't understand this. Can anyone explain why the franchise would be done for?

Because its not coming until they have run the series into the ground and depleted the fanbase to next to nothing.

Then they will pull a huge swan song cashgrab with a FF7 remake that will sell on nostalgia alone just so they can line their pockets before shelving the irreparably damaged franchise.

The remake will flop regardless of when its released. It would never be able to live up with everybody's crazy expectations of it nor their memories and clouded nostalgia for what was actually a flawed game thick in outdated Japanese game design and storywriting that people hate nowadays.

That's the reason why SE isn't going to be making it until they find a formula that actually works with the modern audience.

So what Wada says make a ton of sense.

Having just read the first page before replying...

I take the term 'at present' to mean recently, like since FFXIII (aka first FF of this gen/the PS360 gen) in which case, as much as I have enjoyed those games, I do agree, it'd be hard to argue that they are better than VII unless you flat out hated VII I suppose.

XII wasn't included in my comment and I haven't started XI yet.

Well you said:

Do you really want to remember some of the ones past X? Let's be honest now.

It's pretty much only 13 that is bad, and by extention 13-2.

11 is pretty awesome as an MMO, though I can understand people wanting it to be FFOnline or not part of the main series.

Note I said "some", so there were games that were not included in that comment like XII. You forgot 14, I don't know how it is now but at launch it was supposed to be terrible, and yeah I haven't played XI and I think many others haven't because of the whole MMO thing that was repeated with XIV. As for XIII this game has a sequel with a rumored third and another that is vaporware. So When comparing, the bad outnumber the good.

X is a great game, I just don't like the story or characters from it that much but the gameplay was awesome.

Fuck FF7 remake. A next gen remake of 6 in 3d would be sex.

Yes. First thing's first. Get FFV out of the way for the 17 people that actually want that remade and get on that fully Amano-glorified steampunk Victorian FFVI remake! ;)

Just stylistically there'd be nothing on the market out there like it. Still one of the most amazing overall design aesthetics for the series. A shame it was ahead of it's time and contained in 256-colors, 16-bit sprites.

I'd be excited for a big budget FFVII remake. I'd go apeshit for a similar treatment for FFVI. Fantastic world there.

People still want a FFVII remake? That stuff is old news. Kingdom Hearts 1 remake is what we should be demanding. After the mess that series turned into its time to go back to basics and remake 1.

That said I've wanted them to remake FFVII but make it 2D so it looks like the PSP remakes of FF1 and 2 (but even better). I think it would be interesting to remake 7 as if the Final Fantasy series never went 3D

I'd love this.

I hate seeing the words FFVII Remake and Detox (dre's album). I don't give a flup if they come out and I'm sick of seeing them mentioned for nearly a decade. They are vaporware.

I actually agree with this sentiment.
They need to focus on being relevant and making good games again, and not rely solely on their past successes.

I couldn't stand IX just because of the main character. Don't ever make me play a midget, child, monkey creature that uses puny daggers. zzzzZZZZzzzZZzzzzz. That character should be the companion character that I leave on the ship the whole time and only bring along when I'm forced to for story reasons.

Anyway, Im 28 and VII has not been topped!
