Having leads with actual chemistry will be enough to put it on top of all 3

Im actually very excited for this. MJ and Peter in Raimis films just never felt good to me. Theres quite a few cringeworthy scenes between them...very awkward and not in that "lol Peter cant talk to girls!" kinda way.

I hope Andrew and Emma bring it. Im so excited.

Yes, you got it man groupthink. It means that I have been following him as a reviewer for many years, even dating back to his days at AICN and I found that I agreed with a lot of his reviews at the time (and still do). His tastes are usually a "reliable" barometer for how I may feel/react to a movie.

And so far his review of Spider-Man has probably been the most critical of the lot so I don't see how his negative impression of the movie falls in line with some kind of media groupthink.

Right, I get that, and I just don't think why that's a bad thing. If anything, as a fan of his wor, that should give you pause about the movie.

love spiderman 2. best superhero movie ever.

hope i didn't spoil myself too much by watching that 25 minute video of all the footage released. those nightime scenes look amazing, the colors are so pleasing to the eye.

Of course not. Come on, son.

Spider-man 2 is still my favorite superhero movie, but it isn't flawless. I don't like the bank heist scene with Aunt May being flung around on the side of a building and the climax with Doc Ock at the pier is kind of tonally weird and doesn't really compliment the huge action sequence that comes right before it. Kind of like the crumbling building in Casino Royale, how it felt relatively anti-climactic.

But like Casino Royale, I love the hell out of Spider-man 2 despite a couple of nagging shortcomings. While I probably won't put Amazing Spider-man over it, I'm just saying that it wouldn't be an impossible feat. The bar was certainly set very high though.

during a discussion today my wife brought up a point. "will be be looking at actors starting back at square one again in another 10 years?" i really hope not. this kid will now be known as Spider-man. i hope he embraces that shit and makes 7 or 8 more movies in his lifetime(depending on how well he plays the role).

As a huge Spidey fan, it just seems too soon for me. I remember spending countless hours on the SHH! Forums discussing and anticipating all the 2000 films. I absolutely loved all of what Raimi & Company had put out all the way up until the third SM3 trailer (where I started to have some doubt), which led to me basically forcing myself to get any real enjoyment out of the mess that was/is SM3. But even after that, I still greatly loved the first two Spidey films and was cautiously anticipating the fourth Raimi directed Spider-Man. Then, once SM4 was cancelled, and light was shown on how the producers forced Venom onto SM3; I moved on from the Spidey franchise, knowing it most likely wouldn't amount to much again while it was in Sony's hands.

Fast froward too today, and I'm not particularly excited to see ASM. Is a reboot really even needed? I would imagine that if even I am asking that question (as a huge Spidey-fan), then so it the general movie-goer. So no, I don't see a real problem with reviewers complaining about ASM being a reboot that wasn't needed. Considering we are barely ten years removed from the Raimi series that gave us two of the greatest superhero films of all-time, ASM better damn well provide a reason(s) for a new Spider-Man origin story that is more compelling then the "well, Sony had to" argument.

I'll be seeing it on July 4th in 3D. But just like consumers everywhere asking right now "what's the point?", reviewers everywhere sure as hell have the right to judge it on if it is a good enough movie the justify a story we all know being told again; because I sure as hell will be.

Dropped to 75% :(

Damn, lets hope Sony knows better in another 10 years and doesnt reboot it again...

This is better than SM1. Definitely. I just wish Sony had made this the first time around. ASM2 is going to be fucking great (as long as Webb is directing).
With Kurtzman & Orci writing, ASM2 is pretty much guaranteed to be bad unless Webb, or whatever director they get if he's not coming back, and the cast can pull a Star Trek 09 and elevate the film over a shitty script.

It's just a movie. It's going to take up about 2 hours of your life if you choose to watch it. I don't believe in any of this "too soon" nonsense. I swear people make a way bigger deal about this stuff than it needs to be. Spider-man 3 came out half a decade ago and it was terrible. I can't imagine why any self-proclaimed Spider-man fan would want to wait any longer for them to try again. Like, when is it "okay" to make a simple, entertaining action movie? Why shouldn't they be "allowed" to try again five years after the last one came out and was a massive pile of shit?

It's just a movie. Not some sacred cow. Either you want more Spider-man or you don't. It's a couple of hours at a movie theater. Personally I don't think 5 years later is too soon. It feels like an eternity since SM3 killed the last trilogy. I don't believe that there's a certain amount of time that should pass first before I'm allowed to enjoy a new 2 hour superhero movie.

Yeah? Why? Did you watch the movie?

I'd like to see what people have to say when there's a new Batman franchise in a couple of years.

Defensive much?

And did you read my post? Yes, based on the middle-of-the-road reviews, this being in the middle of the Spidey movie pack isn't surprising. It isn't getting rave reviews like Spidey 2, but its not getting the poor marks Spidey 3 did.

Looks like RT is back to mattering again. lol

The tides shift once more!

Not that, but almost every review reads like "Andrew and Emma are great. The movie is.....okay/passable". I feel like its going to be the calibre of the Marvel Studios movies that aren't IM1 or Avengers.

You fail to mention that it's an ORIGIN story, with all reports eluding to a fairly similar SM1 story with Lizard instead of Green Goblin and Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane. If they try and reboot Batman five years after TDKR with a new origin story (that is extremely similar to Batman Begins) you will see the same exact complaints.

I don't take reviews at face value because... opinions and stuff, but I read them, look at the criticisms and decide if they actually apply to my personal expectations. What do I expect? A well made movie with good characters and action. That's... about literally it. The score is covered by James Horner so I'm not worried there, I'm not anal about special effects, and a lot of positive things have been said about the film regardless of review scores or general critic consensus.

If I see the film and feel like the action didn't deliver, or if the storyline bored me, or if I weren't attached to the characters... things like that is what I'd complain about personally.

I do find it unfortunate that they weren't able to just continue it, but I really, really despised Spider-man 3. For me it ruined the other two movies. I pretend that it doesn't even exist and that Raimi's pictures ended with the second one. I would rather them start anew, regardless of what story points they're going to cover again, because on the whole it does look different. I don't think it looks anything like the first Raimi film. It can share story similarities and whatnot but I don't think it's going to be enough like the first Raimi film to feel like it's a waste of time or something.

Clearly, your mileage may vary, but to me it's just another superhero action movie.

ONLY A HERO CAN SAVE US

i'd sing that song all the time.
I bought the official soundtrack ffs, used to listen to that on my cd player all the time. :lol

Based on RT scores, S-M2 > S-M1 > ASM > S-M3

Sounds about right.
It was in the 80s-90s now it's hovering the high 70s, but still only 20 or so reviews. It's tough to say where it'll end up landing, but given that all the 'rotten' reviews pretty much read the same...

Wait, I just realized. Where is harry?
SPOILER:
His dad (Norman Osborn, head of Oscorp) is dying in this movie. We never see Harry but i'm sure he's in some private college somewhere.

I lol'd. Where exactly would you consider Raimi's SM (1/2/3) to fall with the MCU, quality wise? And when did you last watch them?

Gonna call it now: Avengers > ASM > SM2 > SM1 > IM > CA > Thor >>>> SM3

I can say this having seen all of the above (save ASM ofc) within the past month/month and a half time span.

PS. But yes, Andrew and Emma are pretty great. Also, fuck paparazzi.

This really seems like a movie that is just going through the motions.

I'm fine with that and not expecting a Nolan film.

Andrew Garfield is 28. In ten years, they'll definitely be looking for a new actor to play Spider-Man. That math adds up to another reboot.
