The fact you loved the film is a sizeable black mark against it as far as I'm concerned.
Ummm well even without his opinions, the consensus seems pretty unanimous based on all the gaffers' impressions who've seen it early;

Saw it last night at a sneak preview in Japan. I liked it a lot, especially the fight scenes and the webswinging scenes. The reviews are pretty much right in that it gets a little heavy with the teen romance stuff, but in my opinion they didn't overdo it.
I saw this tonight, it's good fun.
Just came out of the theatre here in Barcelona. Pretty good movie, much better than the Raimi ones. The story is more similar to the one in the comic books, they change some minor things to make it 'fresh', nothing important. Good action scenes, good dialogue, Andrew Garfield is much better than Tobey, Emma Stone is perfect in her role, a bit of comedy here, a bit of drama there...overall, pretty good and solid. Came in expecting nothing, came out pretty satisfied.

[Garfield] does a really good job. You believe that he's Peter Parker, unlike Tobey Maguire, who to me was the opposite of what the character really is. So, anyone who thinks 'bah, I saw the other 3, I won't bother because it's the same story', you are wrong. If you enjoyed the other ones, you'll enjoy this one more. In fact, the best thing you can do is to forget that the preovious one exist.
Saw it today, very good movie, and I'm not a Spidey fan. Far, far better than the old one. Good performance from Garfield and Emma. Stan Lee's cameo is awesome lol
Just back from seeing this. Aside from the Coldplay song during a montage sequence the movie was really good. Probably the best Spider-man movie. Martin Sheen in particular is incredible in the movie. Him and Sally Fields Aunt May have some incredible married couple banter aswell.

The hell? I really like Iron Man.

But the article is saying that it's 'the best origin story this side of Iron Man', where Iron Man is not nearly the pinnacle of origin stories when you consider Batman Begins and Superman.

"This side of Iron Man" means since Iron Man right?

iron man is the most vanilla superhero film out there; it's nothing more than a random collection of scenes revolving around some guy wearing this suit he built. not even downey jr.'s so-called charisma could salvage that mess.

Right, just got back from seeing this.

First a quick preamble. I love Spider-Man. I hated Spider-Man 3 by Raimi, I don't blame Raimi, I blame Sony and their meddling, nevertheless it was poor and needed rebooting, IMO.

Onto the movie. Fuck yeah, Spidey is here. Garfield is fucking great as Spider-Man, he is everything that I wanted Raimi-Man to be, quippy, confident (almost to a level of being cocky), and his relationship with Gwen is so much better than Raimi-Man with MJ. The dynamic is 100x better with Garfield and Stone.

Onto the story, it is decent, but it never really scales the heights of TDK. It feels more like Batman Begins to me, a very, very good reboot. The difference is that Batman had a much longer gap between BB and Batman and Robin, eight years vs five years for SM3 to TASM so it feels like it hasn't been that long. Even then, it's great. For the current debate over TASM vs Iron Man, TASM is better, at least IMO.

Action scenes are great, and webslinging in 3D is brilliant, Spidey himself is much better in action scenes and fights with the Lizard are very well done. The CGI is well beyond any Imageworks title so far and I can see why the budget was so big now, with the Red 5K 3D filming and super high quality CGI is makes more sense.

Onto direction, Webb has got the tone so right, I was worried going in that he would concentrate too much on the Peter/Gwen relationship, and in a sense he does, but he does it right so that we genuinely care about them. I mean in SM3 I just wanted both PP and MJ to die so we could call an end to it all, that is never the case here, Webb makes me care about them all. Which is great.

All in all, I give this 4/5, it's a great start to a whole new SM saga.

My hype levels are through the roof.

Just came back from NYC and got to see the entire cast in person at The Today Show. Can't wait!!

This. I never understood what was so great about Iron Man.

It is, I was just surprised by the jump in quality. It is the best Imageworks CGI I have seen.

it still has the weird stiff animations (judging from the trailers, clips), like all the stuff from imageworks. i dont know what they do wrong, maybe they should fire their animation team.

Other stuff I would like to add, I really, really hope the rumours that Webb and Sony had a falling out are just rumours. Webb has struck up the perfect balance between action, story and the PP/GS relationship as well as the dynamic between them. As for future characters I would like to see introduced, I would like to see Felicia Hardy and the Kingpin brought into the second movie and given main roles in the third. I would not like to see Mary-Jane make any kind of comeback.

Why's that?

Because she is not an interesting character, and any story line which involves her would just be damsel in distress. Boring.
Why would you even assume that? If the
green goblin hint in the post-credit scene
is accurate we know almost for certain that by ASM 3,
Gwen won't be alive anymore
. And at that point it's a no brainer to introduce MJ. It would be a great way to deal with the modern notions of 'one true love', in a contemporary way.. It's bound to happen. If they're smart they'd introduce her in ASM2 in some capacity.

Either way, you can't just ignore her if this movie is going to last longer than a trilogy. She's an integral part in the Spider-Man story line no matter how you look at it.

As for Kingpin though, that's probably something Fox has the rights to (Daredevil reboot).

I don't want to ruin it for anyone, so I won't talk about the story of future movies, but the reason I would like to introduce Felicia is so that we can avoid having Mary-Jane. That's mostly why I want to introduce the Kingpin as well, the Black Cat character doesn't work without the Kingpin. As for rights, I'm sure Sony and Fox could come to some kind of agreement, it might be different actors, but Kingpin is a major character in both universes.

Not at all. She's been more than that in the comics, no reason she couldn't be more than that in the movies.

Not all renditions of Mary Jane are Kirsten Dunst.

Raimi had said(or at least I thought he had) that he wanted to see the Kingpin in some capacity in one of his Spiderman films but the studio decided against it since it was so close to the release of Daredevil, so I doubt it would have anything to do with Fox having the Rights to Daredevil

One last thing, box office performance. Having seen it, I think around $320-340m US would be good, $300m would be a solid performance given that it is a reboot just 10 years after the first one. Rest of world performance I would say anywhere between $600-750m. Sony should have fixed a later release for TDKR with WB as a third week for this would push this over $1bn for sure, without that third clear week it will be tough, but not impossible.

Well considering they're going to be rebooting Daredevil soon (and I have no clue how they wouldn't incorporate Kingpin in some capacity) it's probably off the table as well.

Not to mention, why go dipping into other villains at all. It's only the second/third movie and there's still plenty of famous spider-man baddies to conceive for the big screen.

The character is fine when written correctly. Don't dismiss her because she is written as a damsel in distress in the Raimi films. I get the impression she will be in the sequel and it makes sense.

Wow. The reviews from Gaffers and others is getting me hyped for this. Glad to see the pre-release GAF pessimism didn't come to pass.

I agree completely, I was just making a point.

Sorry, I got your post mixed up with zomgbbqftw's. :p Speaking of which, I know it's been discussed but I still have no clue who they could go with for a main villain to sustain a full film going forward. Mysterio/Electro/Kraven/Shocker or even Vulture seem like weaker villains who couldn't hold a full movie on their own, imo. Maybe Vulture if done right. Apart from the obvious pro to/green goblin, who could be a viable villain for a sequel? Or will they go with two 'smaller' villains (despite SM3's cautionary tale)?

Yeah, that's very encouraging. Have no doubt that haters will amass come release, though.

I expect a glorious amount of crow to be eaten.

Should be, but what I don't get is that guy from Marvel saying that it reminded him of Green Lantern as that is where a lot of the major negative vibes came from. This is a great comic book movie, and while I can't say for sure that it is in my top three without a couple more viewings, it is in contention which is more than can be said for Iron Man and Avengers Assemble.

Haven't read any Lizard stories lately? They revealed the reason that Connors could never cure himself is because he secretly liked being the Lizard. He decides to say fuck it and free himself from human attachments and be the Lizard full time. Shit was nasty what he did.
The last Lizard story I read was the one where a Lizard teamed up with Dark Beast and turned some of the X-Men into lizard-people.

I can't keep up with every story arc. :P

I imagine he was just stirring up a bit of shit for the fun of it. It's not like he can get in trouble for telling people he didn't like it on twitter.

And for those wanting to relive the fun, you can find the entirety of Spider-Man 3 on youtube. Even Sony doesn't give a shit about it. Watch it like you would watch Army of Darkness, and everything will be fine.

Dude, I would remove that if I were you. GAF policy and all.

I have Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray, thank you very much. Look - it came with the others and it was cheaper with it than without it. Honest.

For ASM2, I would open the movie with an epic battle with Rhino or Scorpion. Then have Kraven as the main villain. I would love to see Spidey go against Shocker on the big screen someday. Spider-Man has a great rouges gallery of villains. I just hope Sony doesn't make this into a trilogy; just keep making Amazing Spider-Man movies until Garfield gets old. Chameleon could be fun as well.

I really think Kraven, Vulture, Mysterio, Morphius, Carnage, Chameleon and even that old strange lady (forgot her name, Madam ???) can carry a whole movie. Those are enemies with a HUGE potential, and I mean HUGE that could fit with a 2 hour long sequel.

Just don't bring back Green Goblin, he has been done, for better or for worse in the original trilogy. No more Green Goblin, Green Goblin Jr., Sandman or Dr. Octopus. I'm not fond of Venom either honestly.

I would love the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy to develop further in Amazing Spider-Man 2, so that the loss of her will have a bigger impact in a third movie. Maybe introduce Mary Jane by the fourth film.

I think they are eventually going to have to do Green Goblin, if just to wrap up the Gwen Stacy arc. I see that as a third movie at minimum though. Maybe by then, (if it gets that far) people will start to see ASM more as its own series and they can do something new with goblin. Maybe organic goblin?

In the meantime I'd love to see other villains though. I really like the idea of Mysterio or Kraven.

I take it you mean Morbius. I would love to see Morbius make it into a future ASM movie, he is one of my favourite villains, they could even give him an origin story based at Oscorp, a gifted biochemist trying to cure his disease by working on vampire bats, makes a serum and turns him into a vampire. Would be a nice mirror to Peter Parker.

Yeah, Morbius.

What do people think of Jackal? Wasn't he hated as a character back in the day?

I really hope this is good.

Opens in Japan this week and I'm checking it out with friends on Sunday. PLEASE BE GOOD.

Don't worry, all the GAF impressions have been pretty spot on. But for some strange reason the Japan version changes the ending credits song to some Japanese rock song. Felt really out of place, but the movie itself was great.

I'm sure that the haters will come out once the movie opens wide, but it's going to be very difficult for them to find valid complaints about the fight scenes, web swinging, and CGI. They will most likely attack the story, which could have been stronger, or the romance between Pete and Gwen.

Madame Web isn't a villain, an ass sometimes but not a villain.
