3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Why not make the XL with a 2nd circle pad?

Anyone?

Because as has been pointed out numerous times already, they would also have to integrate the two triggers. The games which take advantage of the CPP's second stick also utilize the triggers. Without those features working in tandem, there's no software support for a second stick.

I'd be interested in an all black XL but an all white does absolutely nothing for me. I had a white DS Lite and it didn't age well at all. I also dislike the white surrounding the top screen.I prefer a black border to the games/videos blend better. Just a personal preference.

I hate how my dilemma right now is whether to bite on this or save the money for the Wii U. Overall Nintendo wins..damn you Nintendo!
If this undermines getting the Wii U... well, I'd wait to see the Wii U's lineup first, but I'd prioritize that personally. Unless you lacked a 3DS, then it's a different story entirely.
Because only about 5 games use the 2nd circle pad at this point
That turns into a chicken and egg scenario then though: to justify building it in you need more games, but to justify more games supporting it the second nub has to be built in. The latter's more likely to actually get that support though, given current 3DS systems have an out, while the XL is clearly covered.

I can understand that preference, but there are already two units that are have the black insides. I hope the next is white to bring some variety.

I'm an ambassador, so I ultimately can't trade-in my 3DS towards getting the XL due to all my downloaded games. One option is to get the Wii U and buy the true 3DS revision when it comes out in a couple of years, but that requires lots of patience...

Hopefully one of these people getting to see the 3DS XL early brings along a DS cart with them and gives us a bit of feedback on how it all looks full screen and 1:1. I've grown to like the full-screen on the normal 3DS, but am wondering just how bad (if it is bad) it is blown up even bigger. It's by no means perfect currently, but it's also not terrible. I find 1:1 to be unplayable at the moment simply due to size. Visually its very bright and clear though.

Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll transition to an account system by the time the XL is out in the US. It seems if they're going to do it it'll be for NSMB2.

I thought the transfer system takes your ambassador status with you? Their website says so...

Hopefully, it's quite probable. People would complain if they lose their 3DS and have to rebuy their digital games.

Yeah but I would like to trade-in my 3DS in exchange for the 3DS XL. That means I'd lose all my installed games if I choose this path.

I wonder if GameStop will be nice (or at least not stupid) and allow a small grace period there. For DS systems it's a big deal to do this transition stuff properly, so it'd be nice to get full credit on trading in a 3DS so long as you brought that model in the same day you got the 3DS XL. At least refunding a certain amount of what you spent to your credit card.

I don't understand what's being said here. What does a second stick have to do with the L and R buttons? The CPP had to relocate the R button on the old model, but I mean, if they just built it into the XL model, why would any other button be affected?

Unless the CPP added more the original 3DS than a second stick?

CPP added L2/R2 buttons also.

Don't you have your 3DS tied to a Club Nintendo account? Any game you register on the club you can just redownload...

Holy shit. What. How did I not know this?

Everyone's been going on and on about a second stick but I've never heard a word about extra buttons before, lol.

At best, they'd probably let you open up your XL in the store and conduct whatever transfer operations were necessary right there with both systems.

Their POS is perfectly capable of doing a return on your XL with just the receipt and then rebuying it with your original model trade in. But good luck with getting most managers to sign off on that, lol.

Screens look amazing and I want one but my budget won't allow for it until sometime after I get my Wii U. And I'm not biting unless resolution is definitely just as good and screen grease marks/scratching have finally been fixed.

What "installed games"? I don't get this, Ambassador games are the only content that won't transfer?

That's not accurate.

All games and content will transfer if and only if you have the 3DS/DS they were bought on(or transferred to most recently). If he trades in his 3DS to get the XL, he'll no longer have the means to do the transfer, which means bye bye games, and bye bye any credit he had on the e-shop.

Yes, it added extra shoulder buttons

They will absolutely let you open the XL up and transfer your old 3DS info to it before you actually have to hand it in.

Problem is needing an internet connection though. I guess for some places it's not so bad, there's a Starbucks right by my local GameStop so any done there should be easy enough, but when it's more isolated from internet access?

Right, for some reason I misread his post to mean that he thought the transfer utility wouldn't let him move his Ambassador games over.

This looks good and I want it. The sad thing is I can see Nintendo releasing a 3DS pro model later on with the features of pro attachment and front facing 3D camera.

They appear to be on an Apple-esque yearly iteration program, so I wouldn't put it past them to put out something new next year. They've done it 4 years straight now.

Yup, was gonna sell off my 3DS and put the money towards an XL

...then I remember I'm an ambassador so now I gotta wait =(

Which you can happily ignore. DSi was pretty much a waste of time. With Nintendo machines the first sku is the one used, anything else gets spotty support at best. I wish we'd stop obsessing about the CPP. If they add that, it's not a 3DS anymore

I agree. I skipped the DSi and just waited for the new handheld.

I'm not playing any 3DS games either until I get this. I tried but all I thought about was the screen being the size of the vita's and I can wait. Wish it came out next week though lol

Despite the online store and the addition of extra functions in practice the DSi was more like the PSP 3000 than the GBC. Screens were nicer and noticeably larger, sound was much improved, and the D-Pad was no longer crap, if the system had been JUST LIKE the DS lite but with downloadable games and cameras it'd have been a full blown waste. As is, I regret more grabbing it before the DSi XL announcement than grabbing it at all.

fair enough for physical alterations. Although I don't find it that different from my DS lites. I was talking mainly about functionality. When it was announced lots of people were excited about the potential for the camera, and the extra RAM/processing power I think was under that hood. That basically got ignored - even by Nintendo which was surprising.

The 3DS is what the 3DS is, accessories not withstanding.

Yeah, I admittedly had more hope for the store and for that power being used, but I guess it's harder to appreciate extra processing power versus COLOR and thus most didn't see it as worthwhile to alienate customers. Then the shop... I believe there was a decent amount of good stuff actually, but I hadn't looked into it too much beyond Wayforward's stuff, and kind of ignored what I did get beyond that.

Really? Then it's not a problem at all!
About the eShop games transfer, I'm not sure of what is possible and what is not. I am an ambassador. If I trade my 3DS can I transfer everything to the XL?

Once you hand off that old hardware, your games go with it. You'll need both consoles in the same physical location with WiFi access (and some time...like an hour) to do a full system transfer.

Thanks for the answer. Ok so I need to transfer everything first and then trade it. Will I retain my ambassador status? (Doesn't seem to mean much now the free VC games deal is over).

Ugh, I really want this, the big screen looks so nice. But I already have a SE Zelda 3DS, that I definitely won't sell. What will I do with two 3DSs?
I also want the white one but apparently it's only for Japan. Damn you Nintendo.
