Thanks for the vid.

Not too bad for DS games.

ew, safe to say I won't be playing DS games on that. No way to screen stretch it at all?

the back of the unit looks nice, too. its still disappointing aestheticly but being able to see the actual thing, in real world lighting, is a lotttt more flattering than those eye-searing product shots from the first night.

I think I'll still play DS games stretched, though, I can live with the upscale blur all of the empty space would drive me nuts, though!

Ahh shit, this is the most I've wanted a new handheld in a long time. This thing trumps the original 3DS on all fronts. I don't even wanna play my current 3DS, I just want this thing now. Original DS games will be so much more tolerable on this, and my hand won't cramp after 40 minutes of play.

oops, I was just going by the picture. :P Still would prefer a image fit button or setting. At least the bottom screen fills out.

Distorting the top screen image by stretching it is not a good way to play any game. I think you'll be happy with the amount of screen real estate that DS games take up in both 1:1 and non 1:1 mode.

Gives me a month to go around to used game stores and find great deals on classic DS titles.

Good luck with that. In the UK it's almost impossible to find a decent DS title on the shelves at retail, filled with kids games and shovelware. I've slowly been building my collection over the last year, but it's cost me more than I'd have liked.

I want to hear d-pad impressions! How comfortable is it? On the 3DS it's like putting your hand to a stove (okay not really, but it's uncomfortable). I'll be playing mainly DS games so this is my main concern. If the d-pad is still uncomfortable I'll be buying the DSi XL.

First of all, DS games look like complete shit if you stretch them, so you should be playing in native mode anyway.

Second, the top image can't be stretched to 16:9 because of two reasons: it would look even shittier, and some games would be completely broken, or at least look extremely weird, if one screen is wider than the other.

I'm watching that video and I see that he's one of those who think you need to hold Start AND Select at once to get it in 1:1 mode. You'd think that everyone would know by now that you hold one or the other, not both at once.

I dont know who at Nintendo they asked about the Screen but from various first hands on, and from the OP i got this

- the screen looks good, very good
- while the image looked worse on a DSiXL than on a DSi, it's not the case here. 3DSXL pixels look as defined as on 3DS.
- the screen seems very luminous
- 3D effect is more comfortable and more immediate.

Just from the bigger size we get all this changes???. And besides the "screens materials" arent even the same from launch 3DS to the newest 3DS.
I think this is just speculation from IGN and they didnt ask Nintendo anything about the 3DS LL.

Im going to wait to the Iwata Ask about the 3DS LL, those Q&A allways gives you the best info.

Meh. I personally trust Nintendos bit more than google translation of a euro hands on. But I'll wait until I get a hands on before deciding at the very end lol.

That bad? I hate black bars/borders with a passion. It would have to be unrecognizable for me to play it in native mode.

You can have it full up the screens height-wise with the DS games, if you really want to make DS games look gross. That screenshot is showing the option for running DS games at their proper, original resolution.

Here in the States I've had pretty good luck. Found Princess Peach and Kirby's Canvas Curse for 7 dollars each last week.

I played DS stuff with stretching (cause I didn't know the 1:1 trick), it's a bit blurred but it's ok. The stretching is the default behavior btw, so you don't have to do anything to stretch it.

I got the Game Boy Donkey Kong today off the shop and it's pretty ugly stretched out just cause it has to scale up so much. On the other hand it's super tiny in 1:1 mode, small enough that they filled the rest of the space with a Game Boy shell (which brought back some memories if nothing else).

Is the screen any brighter? Each time I turn on my 3DS I try turning up the brightness only to find that it's already at maximum.

Why hasn't this question been answered yet? Brightness for me is everything. I don't own a 3DS, but I own a PSP and am thinking of selling it because the screen is so dark outdoors.

K guys I got a few questions here....

1)Does the 3DS have a web browser? If so, can I browse web pages in offline mode when I don't have access to a wifi hotspot?

2)Can you play video files on a 3DS? If so, which type....AVI? Mpeg? Mpeg 2? MP4? What type if card are they stored on? Sand disk?

3)Can you play DS or 3DS games from any sort of media card? SD, etc?

4)Does the unit have any homebrew emulators yet? Snes, Genesis, etc?

1) It has a web browser. I just tried using the browser offline and it doesn't work. The browser immediately refreshes upon starting, so if you're looking at a webpage, close the browser, leave a wi-fi hotspot, and then reopen the browser, you'll just get a message that the connection has been lost.

2) The 3DS doesn't have any built in video playback functionality.

3) No. With the exception of eShop games, they're only playable off cartridges.

4) Unless you have a flash card, no.

1) Yes. When not connected to Wifi, no you cannot.

2) Not sure.

3) Eventually retail 3DS will be available on the eShop, so I assume yes.

4) Not sure.

Nintendo claims its the very same screen tech, only larger. All the 3DS XL's have been tethered to hot women indoors, so we haven't gotten any feedback on whether or not the XL is playable outdoors. If I had to guess, I'd say the ability to do so is just as low as with the 3DS.

1) There's a browser. No browsing offline mode like on PSP

2) You can play video files but they must be AVI and have to be specifically converted for it. here's the thread on how to do that.

3) Dsiware games can be played from the sd card, and full games later this year.

4) No.

Whoa, I just looked this up and didn't know it existed. Going to the trouble of satisfying all the requirements doesn't seem worth it, but I suppose it's nice to have the functionality.

Yea, I don't think it's worth it for anything that's not a 3d video tbh. I mean, videos can't exceed 10 minutes and will only run at 24fps tops if the quality is too decent.

They can't exceed ten minutes no matter the size of your SD card? I've never had the urge to watch a video on my 3DS, but man, that's stupid.

Yup. in the end it's really just for messing around with 3d clips and junk. no more, no less.

'preciate the replies guys, thanks :)

Kind of a bummer about these but I guess you can't have everything. I'll probably get one anyway, because the idea of playing RE The Mercenaries on the road is too good to pass up :)

I just noticed that the stylus is finally stored on the side of the system again, just the way it is suppose to be. I will no doubt be buying the XL on day 1!

The guys that posted the latest video from Germany posted impressions on their website. Their english is better than my German, but not perfect so you'll need to extrapolate some info:

in summary: The better 3DS For our english-speaking friends: - 90% bigger screen - longer battery service life - dull surface - better pressure points for the shoulder and face buttons - Circle pad feels more catchy - thanks to the new size, the 3DSXL is more comfortable - Touch Pen is now on the right side - overall better obstructed - DS and VC games are looking way better on a XL, rather than on the original 3DS - great 3D-effect - minor pixel density? We have not mentioned that - Overall: The better 3DS

Dull surface to me means 'matte'. Better pressure points for the buttons to me means they're bigger. Circle pad feeling more "catchy" to me means it's got ridges or grooves on it now or it's possibly bigger. Better obstructed I assume they mean better constructed. Minor pixel density means that the games aren't visually worsened by the move to the larger screens. The XL, to them, is the better 3DS.

Guess that's it for me, I'm getting this baby, the big screens look amazing! Can't wait to play some OoT on that.

I'm not feeling the NA colors, but I guess it'll end up as with the DS Lite, blue for me, red for my bro.

Yep, I think I have to get this. Those screens are so sexy.

I also have an interested buyer for my current 3DS, so it's easier to ignore how badly whipped Nintendo has me.

Just found a new preview video. Shows off how the 1:1 mapping looks for old DS games.

youtube

Is it just the terrible lighting or does that blue XL look like it has a dark blue on top, and teal color sandwiched in the middle and on the bottom?

It almost looks like Aqua Blue.

In that video ^ yes it does look aqua

It HAS to be the lighting. The lighting is REALLY yellow. Even the black color looks like it has a green/yellow tint to it.

I'm still expecting the blue to look more like this

for easy viewing/marvelling
