3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Right now I would say the 3DS has two "Essential Reading" games, those being Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Kid Icarus is probably my personal favourite game on the system. I loved the combat, loved the dialogue/humour and I found the controls easy to adapt to. But objectively speaking it has a handful of issues that make it difficult to make it a default recommendation, really. I would always recommend Kid Icarus, but only with a bunch of caveats. Even though a lot of those would be for stuff I liked, or even loved, the reception to the game shows plenty of people had issues.

Game controls better with a second thumbstick and is the kind of game that would benefit from better graphics (considering the approach). It doesn't really take advantage of a second screen or touch controls..

all im saying is that it's not a particulary good example of the 3DS uniqueness, wich is what I interpreted out of FaceDa's post. I have nothing against the game nor its quality.

Ive had a really similar lengthy discussion in this same thread a bit back and I dont really wanna do it again, so nevermind me

Ah I see, still don't agree, but whatever. I'm usually someone who advocates multiplats for every 3rd party game. But as of now RE:R is exclusive to the 3DS so that's why it is eligible to be among the best on that plattform.

By your rationale, every FPS on consoles shouldn't be counted as it could be better on PC with mouse keyboard.

But enough of that. I am definetly going to test the 3DS XL with Revelations. If the game looks good on the new screen (still concerned about the aliasing) I'll get it. If not, I might just keep my original 3DS.

Isn't the 3DS XL launching day and date with NSMB2? That's probably a game you'll want to pick up. I dunno, may be good. Just a hunch.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback! Great the video was useful :)

Couldn't follow the thread or response - got back from Gamelab (BCN) and then we had some Euro finals weekend ^^

Thing I forgot to mention is this will need some time to get used to, at least for me. I'm so used to the regular size, that I think I'll die many times in every game (just like in that video) - just due to new size of things. Not that this 'Qué Mal' can be forgiven though...

I played the demo for Kingdom Hearts 3D and man the action is a bit too fast paced for the tiny 3DS screen. I think I might sell my 3DS now so I can buy an XL when it's out.

Nintendo sends us one. We play with it. Is it XL-ent?

I stopped there.

:P In all seriousness, I still can't believe everyone's so hung up on the second stick. Besides some lefties with Kid Icarus, has any game been even remotely unplayable without a second stick? I've played RE, Metal Gear, and the demo of KH without the second stick and they've played surprisingly well, in a lot in not most cases better than their console versions even.

It looks so good. *drool*
Not really a big fan of the silver though. Too boring for me :/

Yeah. Gotta say, I'm not envious of silver one bit. I wish black or white was coming to the US at launch, but I'll take blue (and maybe even red) over that silver.

The impressions mention that you see more image seperation around the sides of the screen. I would have thought overall the 3D image would be clearer.

That EG article got me a bit worried. :/

...you're going to notice a touch more image separation than you got with the original 3DS.

...there's been much discussion in the Eurogamer office whether the screen actually looks a little darker because you can see the black lines separating those pixels.

...and leaves you with a sense that the image quality has been quietly compromised. In motion, you're not really going to notice it that much, perhaps, but the jagged edges of, say, a Mario block, look surprisingly pronounced when the action comes to a stop.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for a miracle, I guess. Now I'm not so sure anymore I'll upgrade.

At least the 3D will be better. Size is a very good thing when it comes to 3D. And a 90 percent increase in size more than makes up for exposing Nintendo's stone-agian approach to image quality and AA.

They should just hand this kind of stuff to DF; then we wouldn't have statements like I 'think' it is darker...

am I going crazy or is the SlideStick/pad kinda smaller on the XL?
in the image it probably is; because the camera distance is close and XL is farther away relatively

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for a miracle, I guess. Now I'm not so sure anymore I'll upgrade.
I don't know for people considering 'update', there is any major reason beside wanting the very large screen; there are other very good little improvements, but still they are little...

.. is that it's roughly twice as good as the original 3DS.
lol. I'd like to know how this is measured.

I don't know what you guys are worried about in the article. He seems mostly positive on it, and the worries about pixelated look for games and easier to lose sweet spot were already known.

I thought it was meant to be harder?

I thought it was meant to be harder?

One of the first concerns most people were speculating about is that a larger screen would make it tougher for some to keep their sweet spot. EG article basically confirms it. I wonder how bad it really is. Some people have a tough time with the original 3DS, especially when they're first playing. I'm going to guess that your eyes will be trained for the XL screen after a while and it won't be a reason not to buy it.

Dammit. I figured he was talking about crosstalk. I've never had a problem with the sweet spot.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong. I took this section of the article to mean he was losing the 3D (seeing double) a bit while not focused on the centre of the screen.

Powering through Rhythm Thief or Super Mario, the 3D effect still looks lovely most of the time - and the bigger screen arguably makes it more of a feature, since it's really filling your entire view now - but if you're hacking away at a game that encourages you to spend a lot of time looking away from the centre of the playing area - at the UI, for example - you're going to notice a touch more image separation than you got with the original 3DS.

It is worded weirdly. Smaller sweetspot would be lame though. I simply assumed a bigger screen would mean it would be eaier to see the 3D. But then, I know nothing about these things.

Well if its even slightly harder to keep the 3D sweet spot, wouldnt that make the upgrade mostly pointless?

Most reports have stated a better sweet spot range, no? Eurogamers impressions are the first I've read saying it's worse, if they are even saying that. Very confusing how they wrote it

Both Christian Donlan and Rob Purchese from Eurogamer wear glasses. Could be an issue with that (although that is complete guess work on my part).

I hope not as wearing glasses with the 3DS is what put me off the original version.

I just want to know how DS games look on this. If noticeably better than the OG 3DS, then it's a must buy (even though I'm sure I'm buying it day one already) and I might even sell my DS XL for one. Still keeping my 3DS though. Need a portable one :lol

Also, is the inside of each colored 3DS XL black? I remember noticing that they were of the same colors inside as they were outside, but I'm now seeing that they are black in some of those Eurogamer shots.

1:1 DS games will be the same size as a DSi screen (almost). Stretched will likely be similar to DSi XL size.

All insides are black for the colors revealed so far, aside from an all white model, exclusive to Japan.

I wear specs, and I've never had an issue. Why did it put you off?

Eurogamer is the only site reporting that the sweet spot is smaller. I'm less inclined to believe him when there's 5 other people saying the opposite.
Yeah. That's what I thought.

Those engraved interior buttons/text remind me of cheap toys. I hope a revision comes around that looks as snazzy as the Lite did back when it launched.

There was a video showing someone playing a DS game on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDhWnQ6qNKQ

So, any updates on UK pricing? I've cancelled my Amazon pre-order, as right now it'll be cheaper (after shipping) and more convenient to buy it from Tesco - and it'll give me enough extra clubcard points to bring my total to the amount needed for an awesome free night at pizza express for me and my girlfriend.

From the Cheap Arse Gaffer thread:
3DS XL pre-order for £161.99 for first time customers at Sainsburys.co.uk. Enter the code SETENJ12

Apparently you can just create a new account if you've shopped with them before.

I'm starting to get really hopeful that we may indeed see somebody break the £149.99 mark.
Still not quite cheap enoughh for me.

Sounds good actually. Nice.

£20 cheaper is good enough for me - I was expecting £159.99, and that price is close enough. Thanks!

edit: ordered! yeaaah. I am kinda curious about how long delivery will take though....I'm off on holiday a few days after the 28th. hm

Jeremy Parish said that he had some headache issues with the [early] 3D being troublesome whilst wearing glasses. By all accounts from friends, Nintendo has sorted out how to use the 3D effect in their most recent games so it's no issue at all if it ever was but better to be safe, etc.

It wasn't the only reason I haven't picked up a 3DS yet but it was another thing to make me wait it out. I'm only waiting until the end of this month though.

Really? I'd heard a lot of mixed things.. You'd put that in your top 5 or so?

In my opinion, Kid Icarus is among the best 3DS games available currently, if not the best. The game seems to be somewhat polarizing, however. If you're willing to accept the somewhat steep learning curve, I promise you that it will grab you for hours on end. It is evident that Sakurai put a lot of love into KI:U.

Revelations is a must-have.

I also agree. If you like the series, there's a good chance you'll love the game. This particular entry is perfectly suited for handhelds to boot. And, despite the lack of twin-stick controls, it plays like any other RE game. Gyroscope controls are neat in their implementation, and can make a good substitute for the second stick in most cases.

Haven't we heard reports of the 3D being more natural and easier on the eyes?

Yep. Four separate, independent French outlets have said as such - Eurogamer is the odd one out here. To be honest, it depends entirely on the person using the console and what their eyes are comfortable with. My girlfriend's opinion and preference on the 3DS' 3D effect is TOTALLY different to mine, even in description.

This thing is getting some great previews. Sadly I day one'd the 3DS and don't have the money to upgrade. Quite honestly I'm not entirely satisfied with it and the XL looks like quite the upgrade. I'm tempted to trade my 3DS in and buy one of these once the price drops a bit in a year or so...
