So uh, how do you expand your disc space on an old school PS3 anyways?
- Buy a new 2.5" laptop hard drive. Up to 500GB definitely works, may be higher now.
- Back up your current hard drive to a USB hard drive using the backup utility (has to be FAT32, I think).
- Make sure all your important saves are on the cloud just in case.
- Pull the old one out, switch the mounting bracket over to the new drive (single screw on all models, I think, google for a guide if you need one), slide the new drive into the PS3 and boot up.
- Some models will ask for a firmware file, just download the latest from PlayStation.com and have it handy on a thumb drive in case.
- All models will detect the new drive and format it.
- After that restore your old files using the same backup utility and USB hard drive and you'll be good to go.
