The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Yeah, so as well as killing iPod music, it doesn't rotate... pretty shoddy port really. The fact that it's multiple hundred megs for a pixel art game is a hint to this.

it's a shame since there is a half-decent game under all the laziness.

But as I've been saying, if you're after a retro Dragon Quest style game get Dragon Fantasy, it's really good.
It's a few hundred meg? Isn't the PC release around 10mb or so? That's crazy.
Fake edit: No, but 178mb. Nowhere near "multiple" :/

Is Guardian Saga as meta/funny as DF? That's why I'm enjoying the most. GS looks almost a little TOO 8-Bit for my liking.

GS is very basic and straight forward. Start at castle, go to each of the 4 element towers, then defeat the final boss. It's very pure like Dragon Warrior (1). No funny jokes, not many secrets (theres a few side caves you can explore near the end for some powerful equipment).

It's a good buy if you want a retro RPG to play. But I prefer Dragon Fantasy like yourself. I just beat the Volcano in Dragon Fantasy. No idea where to go now.

I didn't realise that Dragon Fantasy was based on lampshading comedy. That really kills games like this for me. :( This seems to really haunt retro inspired indie games.

Why? It would only be really silly to be all serious. I like the battle quotes since they're very Earthbound silly.

"Mr. Rock Monster started complaining about his marital troubles!" (attack)

"The Wolfman turns into a cold, scared naked guy!" (on defeat)

Yeah, I love that too. It's subtle enough that you can miss it, but every enemy has amusing attack dialogue like that, and the stuff that is said in conversations is all gently amusing too. It's a nice layer on top of a nice game. I'm just about to leave Wester again to start the quest proper. I've been grinding to get some good weapons and armour. Off we go!

Anyone having problems with Magic 2013 crashing? I've got a new iPad and I've been playing it just fine for the last couple of weeks without any problems. Today it won't load past the screen with Nicol Bolas. I've tried everything short of deleting and reinstalling (can't now because I don't have access to wifi at the moment).

Yes.

I had to delete and reinstall.
You'll lose everything but Achievements.

Were you mid-match, by chance?
I know that's where mine seemed to crap out ... I quit in the middle of a Planechase match and when I came back it looks as if the app just can't load the saved game, crashes and refused to start.

It is not at all an isolated incident and they are supposedly working on a fix.

Dammit. That really sucks. I had already unlocked about 60 cards. I was indeed mid-match. Does closing the game mid-match seem to be the culprit?

Is Infiltrator good enough to pad my backlog further with? Playing on an iPhone 4.

It is very good, but if you already have a backlog why bother? Buy the games you want when you want to play them. TBH I think it does the games (and the authors) a disservice to see games as a backlog and a chore to be gotten through. Finish what's on your plate, then we can see about dessert!

Hi there,

I would like to share with you my wife's last game. She did it alone.

PLanetDefenseForce.jpg

VIDEO HERE -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-mNS23bdTo

This game is like a mix of Missile Command and Space Invaders, with upgrades and so. The objetive is to survive 25 waves of enemies and has online ranking. Any constructive review will be welcome. Thanks!

Holy mother of god. With the jailbreak tweak Quasar, you can run multiple emulators on the iPad at the SAME TIME. The best part? Each emulator can connect to a different Wiimote, so two people could play two different games at the same time on one iPad.

Here's Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X running simultaneously, with two Wiimotes connected, at full speed:

I gotta tell you guys, THIS is the pinnacle of gaming on the iPad. These emulators are insanely well-made.

And that Quasar tweak is just icing on the cake. Emulators and iPad games run extremely well with things like Netflix and Safari on the same screen. Obviously you wouldn't window a game like Nova or something that requires a full screen, but this is remarkable for games like Ascension, Carc, and stuff like that. It works especially well with the retina screen.

I swear I'm not affiliated with that app at all... I'm just that freaking blown away at how good it is. This completely changes my iPad.

Figured out how to do this, wish me luck!

I'm not sure.
I just know that's where it went to hell for me.

I've not seen any official confirmation, but that was my suspicion...Planechase mode specifically.

I've been avoiding quitting mid-match since starting over and haven't had any problems...but that don't necessarily mean anything.

I just finished Squids 1. That was short but very very good. I'd like more of these type of games. Focused with just a few hours play, but absolutely no filler. Onto the next one now!

Opinions on the Cthulhu game? Not the new one, but the TBS game that went free here recently. Gave it a try last night, and I couldn't get into it. Just wondering if it gets better, or if my initial impressions are on the money. The controls are "meh," missions drag on, and the interface is ho-hum, though I do dig the way you can switch out gear on the fly.

Ok EA, at least show the UK some love for handing over the US without a fight. ;)

Seriously, those sale prices are driving me nuts, I don't remember seeing the same love when our Queen celebrated her jubilee!

:O I even have old bomberman carts, this could be totally legal!

With the Wiimotes, is there any special software needed, or are they just picked up as bluetooth devices and the emus know how to handle them.

The idea of a snes emu on my iPad is making me very happy indeed - what's the compatibility like?
Compatibility is perfect from what I've seen. No additional software needed to make the wiimote work, just make sure you download BTStack from Cydia, as well. The whole thing is packaged nicely, and pretty fail-proof.

All of the emulators cost money, except the SNES one (free), but they're pretty cheap, and hover around $4-$5 each. Completely worth every penny.

Let me know if you guys have any questions or problems. This is so good, I'll definitely be interested in helping people out from start to finish if they need it.

Every time I think I can just keep everything stock, something like this comes along and makes me want to jailbreak again =/ Does jailbreaking do anything funny to, say, your iCloud backups?

That sounds so cool. WOuld any bluetooth controller work then? Thinking of making this badboy:

EDIT: oh actually no, that thing is nasty looking :P

I'm pleasantly surprised by Undercroft (iTunes link, free). It's an old-school dungeon crawler thats very light on story, but it has solid mechanics and the engine is great with minimal loading.

The art style is very faux-Amiga jank, and the SFX remind me of old-school Jeff Vogel RPG's... if you dig Etrian Odyssey you should definitely check this out.

Surprising that it's free, no IAP's that I'm aware of.

Kairosoft just released a new one to Android in the US called Sushi Spinnery.

Any word on the iOS release? Hate they seem backwards of most devs going Android first.

I know it's been out in Japan for a little bit.. looks cool.

Thankfully, the subject of this one game here interests me less than others. I really don't like Kairo releasing some games exclusively on one game service. (like IOS still not having the Cruise game)

I don't know for sure, but I don't think so. It specifically scans for Wiimotes, so I'd imagine that's the only controller it recognizes. Again, I haven't tested any other controllers, though.

Interesting. Would the Classic Controller work in leiu of a wiimote do you reckon? I might go out tomorrow and buy something for this. Loaded up my old snes collection on there this evening, I can't believe how smooth and good it looks on the ipad. Starfox ran perfectly, that's always my bar. I'm finally going to be able to play Earthbound properly, can't wait!

The Classic Controller piggybacks off the Wii Remote - it has no wireless capabilities of its own.

It wasn't always, the developer actually pulled it at one point (it was a paid app for ages) then it just showed up as free a while back.

One of the best RPG's on iOS easily.

Classic Controller works perfectly, but it obviously needs to be attached to the Wiimote, which wirelessly connects to the iPad.

As stated above, the Classic Controller is not a standalone controller, it plugs into the wiimote.

Those don't sound too bad, they're just a bit more overt than Dragon Quest itself.
I got this impression the humour was lampshadey and poking fun at the medium or pop culture.

I love Undercroft. Still need to beat it. I keep getting sidetracked by new games.

Did that faux-NES iCade pad ever come out?

The following games are all such awesome value for 99c:

Real Racing 2
Fifa 12
Shadowgun
Air Mail

Damn it's good to be on the winning team.

I was hoping Gameloft would do a sale too though. I want NOVA 3 and I have some mates with new iPads that are keen to get Modern Combat 3 as soon as it goes on sale.

Also I'm surprised that Dead Trigger got such a bad review from Touch Arcade, it's an awesome shooter and the short missions are perfect for iOS.

TA can really be hit or miss with their reviews, I thought the game was alright but not as low as a 2/5, that sort of rating is reserved for angry birds clones.

Yeah, some TA mod/admin/whatever has been creating a bit of drama over there. Evidently, there's some ridiculous feud that's been going on between TA and Madfinger for a while. 'Tis a fun-as-hell game either way. Fuck 'em.
