So I assume it is smart to avoid Dead Trigger if I can't get into FPS on IOS? I bought MC3 and hate the controls. The game looks interesting though

I could not control MC3, but I actually like Dead Trigger quite a bit. I am usually not a fan of FPS on iOS, but this one works for me. I think it might be because the zombies are a lot easier to kill. I can back myself into a corner and then shoot them one by one.

So, Outwitters is coming out next week, it looks kind of promising.

Yeah my AppShopper lit up. About everything from EA is 99 cents right now.

Tetris is surprisingly good with touch controls. Thought it would be a lot more frustrating than it is.

Played a little Frisbee 2. Enjoyable game, but it reeks of the current IAP based game design philosophy that is making me wretch at iOS gaming.

Every part of the game is designed to gradually accrue coins, nothing else. Of course they sell packs of coins in the IAP store.

Recently I completed 100%ed Mario 3D Land, and I've been wondering what that would be like if it had IAP. I guess the gradual coin collecting in this game is similar, and the fact that you can effectively gain coins from Street Pass is a little like getting them through IAP, but it doesn't feel like the game is ever trying to manipulate you.

Meanwhile its been a long time since I played any game on iOS with IAP that didn't feel like it was smugly leading you towards a pay wall. :/

I could use a nice friendly non meta-currency driven game to get my out of my iOS slump. :[

TBH I've played a bit of Frisbee 2 but haven't come up against the pay wall yet at all. But when I do get there, I'll consider it. I'll have had at least a couple hours of FREE content by that point, so if I want to play more then I think it's fair to ask for some money in a pricing structure like this.

And if Mario 3D Land was entirely free until halfway through, I'd be happy with that too.

Word of warning: If you aren't willing to spend £1.99, you won't win the boss car. Don't take his wager. I roundly thrashed him on the three races but if you accept his wager afterwards, it'll tell you to buy a one-use 'super boost'. I didn't buy it, raced the guy anyway and he completely destroyed me.

It's getting pretty grindey for me (on Tier 2 boss) but I'm mitigating much of it by only playing on my cig breaks and waiting for 70% off deals before buying a car.

Thing is, I'm not sure I can go any further than tier 2 without paying. All the tier 3 and above cars require payment in 'gold' which as you've seen, is scarce as fuck.

This is one of those games where I wish I could just pay £29.99 and have everything available. Operating two different in-app currencies (gold & cash) guarantees that I'll never pay a penny though. Worst idea you can have in a 'freemium' game.
Yeah, found that out a bit late. Pretty shitty way of doing things too, especially considering they didn't tell you after the fact. Would've been even more pissed if I'd spent money on in-game currency first, only to find I'd have to spend more just for that one-off thing. Moreso to find that it's not that "hey, if I had a good car I might be able to beat him" sort of thing, it's that there's literally no way at all that you can beat him without that $3 powerup. Pretty sure if you had the best car in the first tier with all powerups, you still wouldn't be able to beat it.

Just as well I found that loophole with the calendar to make those gold things back if I get desperate enough.

So I downloaded that Cthulu game to play on my iPad, and the game doesn't auto-rotate in the right direction in landscape mode.

Thus, if you try to play it using the iPad smartcover propping it up, you have to play it upside down.

So after ten seconds of looking at the new Cthulu game upside down on my iPad, it promptly got deleted.

Oh my sweet lord. Unrelated to gaming, but there's a jailbreak tweak called Quasar adds REAL windowed applications to the iPad. I'm watching Netflix, installing programs on Cydia, and typing this message at the same time, on the same screen on my iPad.

I can't wait to watch movies while playing Carc and Ascension. And, oh man, the possibilities with emulators!

Everyone is gleeful about the coin counterfeit item in Jetpack Joyride, but all that really achieves is making the regular progression at half speed.

So many of the 'top' iOS games feel like I'm gradually filling a metascore, and that score is usually crippled in order to motivate the purchase of coins.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. The really great part about Frisbee Forever is how you pretty much unlock the game as you go. You can watch the free videos for ~250 free star coins a day (which I do and have done since the first game). That helps offset ANY sort of grind, but really, you spend time trying to get gold on the levels, and by the time you do, you should have enough to open the next world.

[...]

Frisbee Forever is one of the few games I feel DOESN'T shove IAPs down your throat...

Personally I really hate watching adverts, and the idea of doing so for meta currency is repugnant! It's less gross than 'sign up your friends for a bonus' ala Facebook, but it's definitely underlining a disrespect for the player as anything but a revenue stream.

Whilst I agree it barely nags at all, unlike Run Roo Run or other titles, it's obvious that this is where all their design is focused. It's hard to trust the game design not to spike or introduce peculiarities when when they know sufficient players can be expected to yield at such points.

oh wow, that's pretty awesome, actually.

Haha, amazing. I checked out the trailers on Frisbee 2, and not only do they give you way more points than gameplay, they also managed to somehow break all music in the game for me.

Even after forcing the game to shutdown and flicking the settings back and forth the music won't return. The game is sound effects only now. D: at least they received their ad money! :/

Edit: you have to shut down the phone to make music return. Nice :|

Holy mother of god. With the jailbreak tweak Quasar, you can run multiple emulators on the iPad at the SAME TIME. The best part? Each emulator can connect to a different Wiimote, so two people could play two different games at the same time on one iPad.

Here's Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X running simultaneously, with two Wiimotes connected, at full speed:
PS7ey.jpg

I gotta tell you guys, THIS is the pinnacle of gaming on the iPad. These emulators are insanely well-made.

And that Quasar tweak is just icing on the cake. Emulators and iPad games run extremely well with things like Netflix and Safari on the same screen. Obviously you wouldn't window a game like Nova or something that requires a full screen, but this is remarkable for games like Ascension, Carc, and stuff like that. It works especially well with the retina screen.

I swear I'm not affiliated with that app at all... I'm just that freaking blown away at how good it is. This completely changes my iPad.

I just bought FF Tactics for the Ipad..... its a bit awkward to control but lets see.

This is my first time playing it.

Is there any twitter account that list sales in the IOS sotre?

What emus have you been running, Dacvak? And any major issues getting bluetooth controllers running on it?
Any emulator that ends in ".emu" on Cydia, plus SNES 9x (which is made by the same author of the .emu apps.)

They all run at full speed, in my experience, on the iPad 2 and iPad 3. (Haven't tested the GBA emu yet since I just got it today, but I'd imagine it's just as good.) I don't play emus on my iPhone, but I'm told they run great on the 4 and 4S, as well. YMMV.

Don't bother with ANY other emulators on Cydia - they all suck compared to the .emu series. I've tried almost all of them.

And absolutely no issue connecting Wiimotes (with or without classic controllers). I don't know about other Bluetooth controllers, like the PS3 controller. I know the iCade is supported, though.

When I was stuck in the hospital and had friends visit me, I used to hook my iPad 2 up to their 60" LCD in the lounge with an HDMI adapter, and we played 5-player Bomberman on the SNES with 5 Wiimotes. Glorious.

:O I even have old bomberman carts, this could be totally legal!

With the Wiimotes, is there any special software needed, or are they just picked up as bluetooth devices and the emus know how to handle them.

The idea of a snes emu on my iPad is making me very happy indeed - what's the compatibility like?

No, but there is a site called Appshopper that may have what you need. Either that or sub to this thread, all the best sales get hyped in here.

And I hope you enjoy FFT. I suck at it :(

Awesome, sounds like something new to mess around with! I'd really only had experience with iMAME (that was on the app store for a brief period). I won't hit you up for anymore info, what you've provided is enough. Thanks :)

Triple post!

I just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying Dragon Fantasy, especially coming from Cthulu saves the World.

The 8-bit visuals are pin sharp and very authentic, a point highlighted by the game's 20 meg filesize, compared to the muddy and indistinct 300megs that CSTW clocks in at. It also looks great on both phone and pad, but the iPad looks fantastic, the pixels really pop.

The controls are great too, with an easy to grasp vpad dealie combined with 'tap anywhere to select' (like in FFT), which is just perfect. The battles are quick and don't drag on. The magic is scarce early on and therefore more valuable. The enemy types and game dialogue are hilarious.

I'm very glad I caught that post by bubnbob pimping this, I would have overlooked it otherwise and that would be a great shame.

I don't have Cthulhu, but this annoys the hell out of me in apps. It's literally one line of code.

Uuuugh, it does that? There was a twin-stick shooter (I can't recall the name) that did that as well... would rotate to landscape, but only one way. No excuse.

Bought Mega Man X with the expectation to play the original. I don't understand how they could botch up a simple port so badly. It can't be that hard for them to have the entire level not split up into mini sections. Completely ruins the flow of the levels. The controls on the iPad were okay, but the auto charging blaster (even though you can disable it) removed almost all of the challenge the original gave me.

Yeah, so as well as killing iPod music, it doesn't rotate... pretty shoddy port really. The fact that it's multiple hundred megs for a pixel art game is a hint to this.

it's a shame since there is a half-decent game under all the laziness.

But as I've been saying, if you're after a retro Dragon Quest style game get Dragon Fantasy, it's really good.

That's fair - we all have our own take on it. As long as I'm able to enjoy the game fully without watching the videos or buying IAPs, it's a success to me. The videos are simply a bonus. And I've also never run into any odd errors like you're having with music that you mentioned, but maybe I'm just lucky, ha.

Regarding all the sales right now, anything great on sale?

It really is an excellent game. That and Guardian Saga are MUST plays for retro RPG fans.

Is Guardian Saga as meta/funny as DF? That's why I'm enjoying the most. GS looks almost a little TOO 8-Bit for my liking.

Anyone having problems with Magic 2013 crashing? I've got a new iPad and I've been playing it just fine for the last couple of weeks without any problems. Today it won't load past the screen with Nicol Bolas. I've tried everything short of deleting and reinstalling (can't now because I don't have access to wifi at the moment).

Bought Infinity Blade last night since its on sale. Our first paid game since we got the new iPad last week, I know it's old news but it's just so impressive graphically on a tablet with that amazing screen. Its just a fun game to play, will be getting IB2 soon. It makes a great first impression, very addicting already.

It really is a fun and addictive game. I played IB1 for hours and hours, so many bloodlines. IB2 looks even better on the new iPad, definitely check it out, if just for the eye candy. It is possible to get burnt out on the gameplay style though.
