the bathroom floor crumbles and the lizard climbs out? After the fight with Spiderman he goes back in the same hole and his labcoat is seen hanging on the rubble.
Let me start by saying that this movie possibly now holds the title for my biggest disappointment in a single scene... ... ever.
The damn crane scene
. You have Spiderman doing his best to get to the action; and then you have this freaking awesome shot of the camera zooming all the way out from his destination to where he stands. I was just sure the next 60 seconds were going to be filled with some of the coolest, most bad-freaking-ass live-action swinging we've ever seen. I was pumped, and literally on the edge of my seat ready to watch SM rush to the action in style. He jumps!!!!!
... and he can't swing and needs help from a series of CRANES to get there... climbing them like a broken old man?! Sure, he got shot. But one, that was completely unnecessary to the story. Two, it shouldn't have made much of a difference in his abilities. Three, the crane man being that kid's dad is just cheesy as hell.
Overall, my feeling is that this was an absolutely unnecessary film. And all things considered, if it had to be done, it should have skipped the origin story altogether.
Furthermore, yes, Gwen and Parker had some good chemistry. But the acting was pretty mediocre, and I never had the hate for Dunst as others. Past that, though, is the fact that the triangle between Parker, Watson, and Osborn was significantly more interesting than a 1-on-1 relationship in this film. Add Norman Osborn being the bad guy and Harry's dad just made everything better. "Go for the heart!" is a much better use of a love story in a superhero film than anything we were given in this reboot.
***
All that said, I still liked it. The use of saturated color was great. And they nailed the swinging. Action was good - the
school
scene was especially fun. The special effects were a big step up from the first, as they should be. Lizard was a good, fun bad guy. I liked how SM actually kind of acted and moved like a spider.
So, yeah, overall an entirely unnecessary film, that is boosted because of well-shot action and much better production values and special effects than the first. I'll buy it on Blu-Ray, but I didn't love it. Which is a shame, because I freaking love Spiderman as a character.
Now I'm starting to wonder if they cut a few scenes where Peter sees there's a reward for a picture of the Lizard creature which would explain why he set up his camera in the sewers. Otherwise, it made no sense other than to show Connors who Spider-Man was.
Except that Batman Begins was at the time the best reviewed Batman movie to have come out. While The Amazing Spider-Man is so far about a bit better than SM3 and a bit worse than SM1 (data provided by Rotten Tomatoes).
Was it? I don't recall seeing any print on the newspaper saying "REWARD FOR PHOTO", but it went by so fast, I could've missed it. I just thought it was a way to show the Bugle and put out the story of a lizard guy in New York.

Man, and how is it that people didn't believe the Lizard was real at that point even though he wrecked shop on a bridge for like 20 minutes (no one had a cell phone or a camera on a PACKED bridge?) and yet there are dozens of pics/videos of Spider-Man (who just fights people in alleys at night and occasionally swings by at high speeds)?
The movie isn't massively different to Raimi's trilogy. I'm not saying there's screaming similarities, but there's no dramatic tonal difference - certainly not the extent of, say, Batman & Robin and Batman Begins.
I thought that as well. It would've been nice if they had Stacy jokingly say something to Peter like, "Hey, you get a picture of this thing and I'll believe anything you say!" That's an easy enough transition.

There was a line somewhere about getting a picture of the lizard. Peter heard that, which is what led him to try to get a picture. Or something. I can't remember exactly what.
Are there seriously this many people saying it's wholly better than every Raimi film? You all are so fickle. I understand people liking it so much more than 3 due to the whipping boy status it's taken on. Personally, I'd watch SM3 10 times more before I'd watch TASM again. 3 is bad, but it's so much more interestingly bad.
Pretty much this. Most spider-man fans seem to be pleased with it, as a SM movie, so that's always a plus (esp. financially). As a 'film' some people are having issues with it, but most like it/say it was decent.
The few that avidly hate it for being unrealistic or cheesy really need to stfu and watch Raimi's SM movies. Some of the cheesiest, unrealistic, unexplained stuff in a comic book movie ever are in those movies.
It didn't make them poor movies and it won't make this one either.
Haha you don't know what you're talking about dude. I'd consider myself a Spidey fan and I hated it. I also hated it "as a 'film'" whatever that means.
Raimi handled cheese better. It's all about being tonally consistent. Raimi always had a tongue-in-cheek aspect and his films never took themselves too seriously. TASM tries so hard to be heavy-handed at times, especially when something so goddamn ridiculous like the crane scene is happening. Remaining tonally consistent is the line between smirking appreciation and rollicking, derogatory laughter.
The whole notion of not being able to get what you want and learning to sacrifice your own pursuits for the greater good is a whole lot different from "blow up the city." Or in this movie's case,
turn everyone into lizards
One of those plots has a theme and an emotional throughline. The other is just cartoonish.

Nah, it was what other people said. There was a shot of the Bugle saying they'd give a reward for a picture. Then it cut straight to him setting up in the sewer.
Good film, but the ending left me a little unsettled.
If they even loosely follow the comics, then having Peter break his promise to a dying Captain Stacy reads like a real dick move. Denis Leary was right, and Gwen ultimately dies because Peter does the irresponsible thing. This might be why Uncle Ben never actually says "With great power comes great responsibility," which is one thing Raimi did better in his first film.
Other thoughts:
- Shaky-cam first-person + 3D = blurry picture. (A number of items in the background seemed like they should have been clearer, like the photographs in the first scene at the Parker home.)
- Emma Stone is an attractive lady. 'Nuff said.
-
Did he steal that web cartridge from Oscorp, or did he just come up with a remarkably similar container? If he grabbed one, I missed the scene.
- Great Stan Lee cameo....or greatest Stan Lee cameo?
-
Yeah, the crane thing was just as bad as New Yorkers pelting Green Goblin from a nearby bridge. Does the City of New York require these lame scenes in order to film in their state?
- If you can't tell exactly where the plot is going by the second time Peter goes to Oscorp....you're not that smart.
I'm watching Spider-Man 3 now and, up until they retcon Sandman in as Uncle Ben's killer, it's actually not that bad. The shit's about to hit the fan though. At least I've got some montages to look forward to.

Up until Sandman is Uncle Ben's killer it's better than Amazing Spiderman. But after that it gets super-wacky. Still I think the emo scenes are some of the best the series has ever had. If people didn't get it then it's their loss.

I'm still convinced Spider-Man 3 could be re-edited into a good film. There's quite a few bits of good to be found there. It would make for a pretty good video editing project.

You're right about that. When Spider-Man 3 came out, I almost walked out of the theatre, but had to stay just to see how much worse it was going to get. I've never had that thought in my mind for any other movie I've seen in a theatre. I even boo'd when it was over.
I was so pissed at that movie I wrote up some really long rant which just trashed it and offered suggestions on how they could've gotten around a lot of the problems. Wish I could find it again, it's probably a fun read.
I finally decided to sit down and watch it again about 3 years ago and actually forgot that the beginning was actually really enjoyable. I kept thinking, "Oh maybe this wasn't as bad as I remembered it". Then boom, as soon as the symbiote lands, it all came flooding back. Just nose dives after that scene. I can't remember if that's before or after the Uncle Ben retcon though.

He looks online for information about their publicly available towing cable and then gets a package from Oscorp. I'm pretty sure. Messy editing.

The Raimi one didn't actually have any effect on Goblin. He brushed it off. It was only there to show that the city loved spider-man. It also didn't really involve the people putting themselves out there too much. The Webb version has a handful of people helping Spidey despite him not having done much saving at all yet, and it plays it as a crucial moment despite being so ridiculous.
Not true. His dad was a researcher alongside Connors, he was the one who possessed the only fully-working formula, which he tried to keep out of the wrong hands. And it was Peter's father and Dr Connor's research which unwittingly gave him his powers.
1. Lizard was pretty terrible. I mean, his design was bad, but the entire character was just garbage. But, the action scenes were decent.
2. This movie has the best Stan Lee cameo, confirmed. Deniers can visit the exit stage right --->
3. Andrew Garfield crying over Uncle Ben's body was the most hilarious thing I've seen in a long time. His blubbering, quivering lip looked so funny I seriously had my laughs echoing throughout the movie theater.
4. Damn, Emma Stone is my new crush.
5. The Crane LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL... *catches breath* HAHAHAHALOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
6. Ok, Peter Parker's father "mystery" is not really central to this movie. The true question, which they will likely cover in the sequel, is:
Where did Connor find a near perfectly clean blanket in the sewer?
A sub-question might be:
And damn he moved that entire lab into the sewer and nobody noticed?
These and more are sure to be covered in the sequel. Peter Parker's dad is really a secondary plot comparably.
The crane scene was definitely the worst out of all the "NY helps Spidey moments" in 1 and 2 Goblin and Doc Ock don't give a fuck and brush it aside so casually. Especially Doc Ock.
In here we get some cheeseball watching TV saying "my boy Spidey's in trouble, yo lets get the cranes out" and it just had to be that kid's Dad too.

Yeah, ASM was easily the most contrived of the "NY helps out" moments (I can't believe this is actually a term now). Everybody and their brother just manages to get over to the cranes that are conveniently along Spiderman's route. Ugh.
You could say it's a coincidence that the crane operator was the father of the boy who SM saved. I tend to think the more believable coincidence is that the man wound up having command over the city's cranes.
