Bloomberg: 7-8" iPad Mini in ~October

I secured a Nexus 7 through J&R at a price where I'm comfortable with the idea of selling it in 4-6 months if this rumor bears fruit and the resulting product passes muster.

I'm so confused now! Was going to get the nexus but I'd pay an extra £50 for a 7" iPad instead!

I've always seen android as like another poster has said as a low rent ford compared to Apples BMW.

£159 is worth a punt and that's apples problem. They should have released a 7" iPad years ago!

I will get one as long as the hardware for this isn't nerfed as badly compared to the iPad as the iPod Touch hardware is compared to the iPhone hardware.

If Apple does release a ipad mini with a 7" screen. Wouldn't that kill of the Android tablets? Is that really good for the market right now?

If it's not good enough to compete, how is it good for the market?

Why should Apple go easy on Android? If Apple kills off the Android tablet scene that is Android manufactures own fault for not being able to compete with Apple.

i'm eager for Apple to further dominate the tablet market space. i assume it'd make any future US antitrust lawsuit against the company to open up the App Store and platform much easier to prosecute.

open up the app store for malware apps?

I don't think they can get into that sort of monopoly trouble that MS got into in the 90's. Since tablets and smartphones share the same OS and are the same platform iOS has no sort of extreme dominate position due to Android on smartphones. Tablets and smartphones are basically just different form-factors of the same thing. Like the difference between a laptop and desktop.

yes, that's the category i hope antitrust lawyers would allow.

i guess it would depend on how lawyers can/would/will differentiate the devices, and i think there are enough variances in form, function and delivery to make the case that they could be treated as separate markets.

A friend on Facebook who is an Apple fiend claims there's an Apple event on July 25th. I haven't heard anything on this anywhere.

Having a closed development platform isn't illegal, even if you're a monopoly.

Hey guys it's not really fair to android if apple releases too many appealing tablets. Don't you think they should hold back to give android a fair shot????!?!!

Its fine android is beating iphone up in the phone market anyway. Plus judges with comment sense.

Probably, but all the features on the 3GS will work as expected and without random crashes, slowdowns, and terrible battery life on the Android 2.3.

I hear people complain about this kind of thing often but doesn't this only come up in the low end Android devices? I have had a Samsung s2 for over a year now and haven't had a single crash/battery problem ever (and i dont think I have turned the thing off once yet) Maybe I am lucky x_x

Also, I had an iPhone 4 before this device and it was rock solid dependable as well, so I probably am lucky....I ditched the iPhone cause I fucking HATE itunes...never again....

I don't think apps will be such a killer feature on a mini iPad. People like smaller tablets for Web browsing and watching videos on the go. The $200 7 inch market is mostly appealing to those who can't justify a 10 inch tablet because they wouldn't use it enough.

But still, what would be the aspect ratio of this device? People in this thread are saying the iPhone and iPad aspect ratios wouldn't work for ergonomic and UI reasons. It would be pretty interesting to see if apple tries making both this and the 4 inch iPhone 16:10. Might have cross compatibility in apps.

I don't know, I considered an iPad but the price was just too high (iPad 3 @ $500). At $200 I would bite.

I would use the shit out of the $500 iPad but it's just too much money for me.

One could argue Nook Color/Tablet and particularly Kindle Fire show this may be a possibility.

I've been arguing for quite some time that I just don't seen Android having a large place in the full-sized tablet sector - I think it'll be Apple and MS.

Where I see it doing well is with 7" sizes, and more so I've always thought that the more tunnel visioned (for consumption) forks like Nook and Kindle may prove the most successful. The Nexus is garnering a lot of attention though, so maybe there's room for a more traditional Android experience. But even then, I suspect it will be used much in the way Kindle, etc are given the small amount of tablet apps.

It'll be interesting if this changes things. Apple may prove the above false, but then again it matters how this thing is marketed and what it does. If it's actually using iPhone apps, or is at least marketed in a way similar to Kindle ... I suppose it still doesn't prove anything. Same thing if MS gets involved. It really matters how it's directed.

Either way, my assumptions about Android and its forks being quite successful at 7" was made without consideration for Apple or MS entering the market. So regardless of how this or a potential MS rev are targeted, I'm looking forward to seeing how the market reacts. Maybe there simply isn't a ton of room for Android tablets in general.

I was looking for refub iPad 2 today and I checked out craigslist. The used price is actually very low. You might want to consider that.

Would you pay an extra $50-$100 for a 7 inch iPad over the competition?

The display will likely be slightly lower resolution but you get more tablet apps. Those are the main differences.

The problem for Apple is there is no mini iPad market, just a Kindle Fire market.

Probably not... I have a Nexus on order.

Might consider it though for my GF depending on the pricepoint, later in the year.

Lol. They'll sell as many as they can make, just like the existing iPad.

The fact people still under-estimate the appeal of the Apple brand over competition amazes me.

And lol that NPD is some how right and IDC, Forbes, etc are wrong. None of them know for sure Amazon doesn't reveal sales.
