Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

It's easier to keep track of one thread rather than two and there's not much to talk about anyways.
Well yeah, but that's all going to change very quickly and GW1 isn't shutting down anytime soon. Where will those that choose to stick with GW1 but not play GW2 go? They will be drowned out in a sea of newness here.
The good news is, you will be in the know when the game launches and all the GW1 players are blinged out with titles and fire swords!
Meh - those will be obsolete after Christmas anyway. Yes yes, I know, transmutation stones but really I can live without being a homogeneous "look at me, I was a GW1 player" look ;)

I dont understand why the Guard's sceptor is so slow moving, and not a true projectile. I just never understood the logic behind it, why does it need those restrictions?

Has there been any discussion from Anet about additional emotes being added to the game between the BWE and release? Surely /dance is still to come...and /drum right? They aren't gonna ship without /drum right D:

Those people were never in this thread to begin with. People who are just playing GW1 and not interested in GW2 are probably discussing that elsewhere. The only reason the discussions of GW1 have been happening here is people are trying to finish up their HoM rewards before the game releases. When GW2 releases everyone here will be playing that, and not caring at all about GW1 (except a handful of people who will spend their time complaining that GW2 is not GW1).

ANet has actually stated that they wish to work on Guardian's ranged options and that they were thinking of vastly speeding up the scepter projectile speed and putting it in the 900-1200 range and then making staff the medium range option in the 600-900 range. It was a post on the official forums so it's gone now, but I think I'm remembering it properly.

Edit: Here's the statement from Jon P.

Yea, I knew they were working on tweeking the sceptor, I just never understood the logic behind it at the beginning. Why is it so limited? I can see it following the ground, or being slow moving...but both just seemed excessive qualities of the weapon. Might as well have just made it a melee weapon at that point.

So I have to start writing the OT soon and I wanted opinions on what I should cover. Remember I only have 1 page to work with so that's 24k characters.

Things I know I'll put in:

Races
Classes
Combat
Dynamic Events
Crafting
PvP
Server/Guild stuff
Story Factions
No Monthly Fee/No server downtime for patches/No queues
If I have room I'll talk about the trading post, focus on aesthetics over ever increasing numbers, cities, etc.

I just don't know how much else I should really cover in it seeing as I've already covered everything my MMO champ thread.

I'd recommend highlighting the no subscription, combat, and dynamic events while make the whole thing look sparkly and cool with pretty pretty pictures and badass videos. (probably need to do a little background with races and the overall concept i guess).

I think those are the things that make it different from other MMOs and might attract curious players to the game. A very long OP could be rather daunting as well. So keeping it somewhat manageable while hitting all the highlights is the way to go, i think

If people want more information on the game, just link your MMO champ thread and tell them to read that.

Did you ever get the whole OT situation cleared up Jira? I would hate for you to spend all this work planning the OT, only for the Mods to say "too bad, you don't get to do it."

In any case, I'm not particularly good at this sort of thing, but I will second what Piecake said, you really need to front-load the OT with all of the ways that GW2 is different from a traditional MMO.

There are going to be people popping in and skimming the OT just wondering what all the fuss is about GW2. They generally had no previous plans to play the game, but they just keep hearing about it and want to know why. Hell, I was one of those people before I stumbled upon your original GW2 topic. The OT should be designed to hook these people before they get bored and (falsely) determine that this is another generic fantasy MMO. Once they're hooked, then you can get into the detailed discussions about races, classes, lore, mechanics, what have you.

Also, it couldn't hurt to have an FAQ section at the end of the post (character limit permitting) so that when people pop into the thread just to ask "Is there any PVE in this game or is it all just PVP?" we can point them to the first post.

Edit-
I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know here. If your previous threads are any indication, you know what you are doing, and you just need to find a way to condense it to a reasonable length for the OT. I just wanted to emphasize how many people there are out there that really want to play GW2, and just don't know it yet. Its just a matter of keeping them reading long enough for the content to start to sink in.

Yeah, it's going to be tough keeping stuff to a minimum considering the game isn't just doing one small thing and the rest is standard, it's innovating in many areas while also taking the very best ideas in the genre and putting them into one package. It's going to be difficult to get this all across in one post.

I have been wondering about this as well.

Have the rules for OTs changed? I thought you could have multiple posts for the OT? God, I remember Assassins Creed Brotherhood was like 4 or more HUGE posts long.

I think Piecake nailed what should be included. Narrowing down what info you provide for even those sub-sets is going to be a challenge with only one post.

Pretty positive there's no OT issue. I posted in the OT claiming thread months before that other guy and it's pretty damn well known around here that I would be doing it and not some random person who's never even posted in our last Beta thread. It would be like me making the Halo 4 OT.

Come to think of it, not a bad idea...

I think instead of the OT being a massive info dump of all the things GW2, just focus on why GW2 is the MMO that changes the rules. Explain what dynamic events are, how the combat is, etc. Focus on the parts of GW2 that are different from the usual MMOs and really sell the game to people who have been avoiding or given up on MMOs.

We're still going with the "Guild Wars 2 |OT| The MMO (R)evolution begins", right? Sell that Revolution and Evolution.

Then, link to your massive post for the uninformed for the people who want more info.

Like, I would even go so far as to not outline stuff like classes and races except in passing (maybe a blurb for each, or even use the class montage image from the GW2 site and just put a sentence-length description about each in the image. Same for races.

Way too PR. It should be a fan title and the OT should be the opposite of what ANET shows. Though in the past I made an OT pretty much purely fan content and it got destroyed.

Have to find a good balance.

Guild Wars 2 |OT| of "yeah it's pretty okay, for like a week or so"

I agree it would be pretty ridiculous, and I hope you are right that it won't be any trouble, but I've heard stuff like that has happened before. If you haven't already, I would just PM the guy who claimed it, and explain the situation to him. If he's at all reasonable, he will understand what happened, and step aside, and then it won't much matter what the mods think. If no one disputes the OT then they have no reason to get involved.

I agree that you don't need to get all that in-depth about each of the races and classes. A short description of each, and maybe a picture should suffice. But you definitely want to mention them all. For a lot of people, when looking at an MMO, they want to know "Is this going to be a bunch of Elves and Dwarves and stuff?" They also want to know if the classes are varied and interesting. When you commit to spending that much time with a game, you want to know upfront if you are going to be bored with your character and with the world before you even get started.

Maybe a little too PR-sounding, yeah, but it's true; GW2 is both a revolution and an evolution of MMOs. I like the sound of it, but it does sound like PR-speak.

Guild Wars 2 |OT| of "yeah it's pretty okay, for like a week or so"

Guild Wars 2 |OT| "Wait a month, it'll be free to play"

Right, I didn't say "ignore them entirely", just not spend a lot of time or even a whole section describing them. Literally have two images; the "hero shot" from the GW2 professions page and a montage of the races. One-sentence description of each, link to more info. Done. Save space for the stuff that needs explaining; dynamic events, Karma, weapon sets, de-leveling, WvW, combat, etc.

That stuff alone would fill up a post. I do not envy Jira's job in the slightest.

That said, if you want to hash out the OT in google docs, I'd be happy to contribute... same for images and such.

Just my opinion and that title sounds fine. I just have my own take on the OTs around here. I'm not a fan of the short bullet point ones because they are the equivalent of "back of the box." I think people praise those just to be edgy to the past. The PR ones are just awful, wiki pulls and lame PS layouts. The best ones are the unique presentation types. But honestly those are few and far between, making most OTs insta-skip.

If Jira consolidates a lot of information into a digestible and easy to understand post while not sacrificing depth, that's a successful OT IMO. That's creating a chunk of information you can't fine elsewhere and it educates those interested in the game. The flash can come from the graphics, which you can have some fun with. But no PS PR layouts and such.

Just my two cents.
Guild Wars 2 OT | "I Asura you it is Charrming!"
heh

Great title, doesn't sound like PR speak at all. In fact this is basically how I described it to people. That it's an evolution of what is the generic mindset of what an MMO is supposed to be. Most likely to be copied like WoW was.

Eh, I wouldn't go with the whole revolution thing IMO. Just comes off as a little fanboyish to me(not really to me, but could come across that way to others), just seems like troll bait for people to bash it at some point. I like the more comical titles, but that's just me.

Apologies for the GW1 post.

I'm done with HoM - 35/50, will never hit 50/50 or GWAMM. Instead of wasting the money or letting it rot in storage, I figure it'd be better spent helping gaffers reach 30/50. So I'm giving away 342k, 37 ecto, various weapons (mostly hero fodder), upgrades and consumables to the folk who want it. PM me here and we can set something up in-game.

Edit: I'm broke now.

Newegg offers Guild Wars 2 for $48 today only

Are you still on the fence about purchasing Guild Wars 2? If you've been holding out for a deal, this might just be it: Newegg.com is offering GW2 for $12 off the standard edition.

The standard edition of Guild Wars 2 is normally priced at $59.99, but with this promotion, you can pick it up for $47.99. To get the discount, you'll need to pre-order it through Newegg.com (obviously) and use the following promotion code: EMCYTZT1867.

It's important to note that this is a retail box copy that will ship on release, not the digital download. Also, this promotion applies to today (July 7th) and today alone.

Yeah the class and race stuff can be kept to a minimum. I'll start working on it when I get home tonight.

Agreed. Plus the (r)evolution thing reminds me too much of the Ron Paul campaign slogan signs.

Why not just go generic like the FFXIV thread and say something about Tyria? Also, since every character starts out with their cutscene ending with "This is my story", maybe a play off that? "Guild Wars 2 |OT| This is Our Story". Little cheese there, sure, but it doesn't matter what you put, it's going to be a cheesy to someone.

Apologies for the GW1 post.
Eh, I'm over it :) - these guys did a great job explaining why it belongs here for the time being

Keep the OT simple. Concentrate on how GW2 is different and leave out fluff. Simpler the better IMO.

Agreed.

Personally, I'd rather avoid slogans and calling out other games in both the title and the OT. It reflects bad on the community and just attracts even more trolls from other OT's. Explaining how things differ is fine, but I don't see the need to overhype it.

"Guild Wars 2 |OT| The MMO (R)evolution begins",

Like others said, this sound so fanboyish or/and over the top, i support the idea of a funny title or a simple one.

The OT imo should be concise with good info to introduce new players to what GW2 is, what it does different and showcase the game, it shouldn't be a PR statement 10 post long with state of the art PS images.

In Jira we trust!

Also, Epic voice guy (CaraEmm) released a new video about Lvling up.

Great video as always. There's a lot of people who simply go from Heart to Heart and that's all they do fully expecting that to level them through the zone. Hearts are not the main driving content in the game, Dynamic Events are. Hearts are merely supplementary to DEs as one time pieces of content in case events aren't running in the area. A lot of people are so drawn to Hearts because of their love for a linear experience. I have no issues with linear experiences in gaming, but GW2 isn't that game and people shouldn't want to try to make it into one by complaining on the forums that they don't have enough XP, yet it's painfully obvious they did nothing but go from Heart to Heart and went to each POI expecting that to level them 15 times. As made clear here, Hearts and POIs are one small part in the many ways you can gain XP. EXPLORE DAMMIT. DO EVERYTHING.

I'm wondering about hall of monuments thing, is it worth getting gw and expansions to get that stuff and rewards? What do I get, weapons/titles? Is it worth it and how long does it take?

If you have never played GW1 before, it'll take quite a while. Many many many hours, many many many.

Though if you like it, and have nothing else to play through atm, working on the HoM would be a good way to pass time till August 25th.

Then don't bother :P There will be plenty of cool gear to wear/use in the actual release that the HoM rewards wont be worth forcing yourself through sometihng you dont enjoy.
