EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

It peaked with Marvel at about 98k.

Would've peaked with SF4 if they weren't running a full 2 and a half hours late.
i wonder how many people only caught the kof gf's because they were only expecting marvel to be starting.

marvel was a bit anti-climactic because many of the marvel faves got taken out early. i suppose a new marvel hero was found in infrit, but i doubt that'd last without the victory in the end. he played reallly good though and deserves recognition as one of the best. holding it down with xf3 sentinel is no easy task.

I can respect FChump's game since he didn't use Phoenix at the end.
because he switched from phoenix who was top tier in vanilla, to dormammu who is top tier in ultimate? or simply because phoenix is a hated character and dormammu is a cool one?

I actually slept through the top 4.(I swear EVO should be on the east coast to avoid time zone problems due to bad time management) I know Infiltration won grand finals, but who did he face?

Thanks for the clarification.

I don't know well how the connotation of the word is on Mexico. Sounds like something akin to "pendejo" in Puerto Rico, which can be very offensive in many situations.

I don't know how I feel about it. It is very common on competitive events to heckle the competition. Even the booing for some of the matches (minus the Mago, troll booing) felt really weird. I don't know, there people play fighting games, is not like they have a voice or a political view that should make them that unpopular that would warrant booing.

True but due to international, u get the hometown cheers or the hero/villian cheers. It'll turn into the "e-sports" argument of rawness with may end up being insult laden being one end of the spectrum and MLG's very sterile clapping on the other end, with this year's EVO threading the needle in the middle for the most part (rowdyness with a few intances of rudeness, but didn't dictate the atmosphere of the event)

A lot, likely. It did inadvertently give a gigantic boost to the insane KOF GF, though, so it ended up ok, especially since SF4 was a gigantic letdown. (Marvel totally needs to get to finish the night next year.)

Doubt it will happen. Marvel is still America's game. AE is the world's game.

Yeah no. There is a big difference between what went on for a short period today and regular tournament banter. Even the norcal stuff was directed at Champ, so isn't comparable. You might also notice that the chanting was during KOF, which had Mexican representation (against other nations) right till the end. The offensive chanting however did not persist for whatever reason.

Suggesting that you should 'send somebody packing' to stop offensive behaviour is something you might also want to reflect on. Getting 'opened up to the world' does not mean being exposed more to the antics of a small niche of people you may be used to. Unless you are talking about tournaments in Mexico or something...then I don't know. Anyway not the place for a fighting game ethics debate. I've got my opinion on the subject, you are welcome to your's.

Heh, all I gotta say is, welcome to Mexican competition. This happens all the time there, in any venue. The heckles really weren't anything you wouldn't hear anywhere else, quite the opposite in fact. Rest assured none of the insults were personal. It's not common in other countries, though, especially in the US, so if you're not used to it it may well come as a bit of a shock to you.

What the hell happened to Ricky Ortiz? I'm so mad he didn't make it to Top 8 this year.

He would have had a good shot taking down Infiltration like he did in NCR this year:

LI Joe took him out in Losers.

When in Rome....etc. It's totally not appropriate- the only place I ever see chants like that is Pro Wrestling, and that of course isn't a real sporting event.

Yeah I couldn't fight it and fell asleep around the top 4. So the results were:

1. Infiltration
2. Gamerbee
3. PR Rog/that cammy player

???

Diago and company didn't play like their normal selves. I think how late the event ran really affected their skills. Diago looked like a noob in his last two matches because of this (from my pov). He looked like a different player compared to his previous matches in the tournament.

Hopefully, at Evo 2013, all of the final matches are held in the afternoon.

What did the chant mean exactly? Because I've heard plenty of insulting chants in all sporting events. NBA, NHL, Soccer...

And Marvel will never take SF4 as the main fighting game. More people own SF than Marvel and more people play SF4 than marvel competitively nationally and internationally. It wouldn't make sense.

i didn't mind it personally at the time, people were even chanting during scv in the morning. so to see what the fuss was all about, i just googled "culero". not a good look, if i heard the word correctly.

If absolutely nothing else starting Finals Day at 8am (as opposed to I think it was 11am?) would have completely eliminated the problem. But yeah holy shit KOF ran for fucking ever; Grand Finals were fucking hype, but that was definitely the biggest time sink. The time issues definetely have bummed me out this year, I stayed up super late and called in today to finish Marvel and try to finish SF4, but it wasn't worth it at all like it was in last years.

Aside from the obvious answer of starting early at the same time as they did Friday/Saturday (actually not sure why they didn't), they could alternatively maybe run finals for one or two of the games on their respective days. Let's be honest, SC5 and SFxT at the very least could have run on their respective days.

What an amazing experience this year was... unfortunately AE wasn't as amazing as last year. Marvel really stole the show tbh (as well as SCV and KOF). Loved watching all of it, I'm surprised I actually managed to stay up until 3 AM when AE finished... and it wasn't as hype as last year. :(

Anyway, hopefully 2013 marks the year they get their scheduling down pat. Though I swear last year's scheduling wasn't as bad. Maybe that's because they didn't have all these game demonstrations except for like... one, which was Soul Calibur 5. And everybody liked that, because the game was receiving some major changes. Something like TTT2 didn't really deserve a demonstration, tbh, as people know what to expect from that game. Injustice? Sure, that was a good choice to demo, as nobody knew what that game was like.

All in all, less game demonstrations (unless they continue on the amazing hype after a GFs set) and more tournament time IMO.

And yeah KOF was a pretty big time sink. It went well over the time the TOs expected, I think, looking at the schedule.

1. Infiltration

???

1. WW|Infiltration (Akuma)
2. AVM|GamerBee (Adon)
3. CVPR|PR Balrog (Balrog)
4. eLive|Xiaohai (Cammy)
5. MCZ|Daigo (Ryu)
5. HumanBomb (Sakura)
7. BT|Dieminion (Guile)
7. TH|Poongko (Seth)

Top 32 of SF4 was much more hype than top 8.

Dieminion getting bodied first match and Daigo not playing like his normal self made it not so fun to watch.

Marvel and KoF were both fun to watch. Still think it was a good EVO

Its general meaning is asshole going by urban dictionary, wiktionary, and dictionary.com

It can also double as a slur against homosexuals, though.

there was one instance during KoF when the crowd was chanting 'puto', i think they realized it was pushing it and dialed it back? dunno if that's better or worse than 'culero'

Given the circumstances, PL would leave, he has before. PL is still a youngin living with his family so his options are go with someone or nobody at all. If he can get himself into a proper team or group, I think he would leave. And by proper I mean proper. Not something like DMG where benefits are limited.

PL leaving EMP again isnt a question of will happen but insted when happen. He left EMP last year and joined like 5 different teams.

This

I know a couple of the guys that were very likely doing that, and trust me, they definitely respect the top players. I‘m not a fan of it either, but I know they don‘t mean those words in their literal meaning. Like I said yesterday, it was pretty much them being mexican.

Infrit and ChrisG and their late game bad decisions and collapse were so cringing... urgh.

Still in disbelief. All Chris G needed to do was Morrigan's DP super, it would have pushed Champ back full screen where he can finish him off with chip damage. However said Chris G may not have the mental strength to close it out called it correctly.

The break killed the momentum, I mean you can't make people wait another hour for SF when it's already that late. And some of the players looked totally done before the matches even started.

Great weekend all-around. No regrets over the amount of sleep I lost.

I was disappointed that we never got to see any of the supposed "hidden tech" for Marvel - Justin Wong's Wolverine tech or the Kubotu escape in a real match. There were a couple of Sentinel TAC infinites that god the crowd I was with hyped up, though.

Justin looked he bluffed that. He said the exact same thing last year too about having some new gdlk Wolverine tech. I don't remember if that was actually the case. It seemed to me Chris G tried to pull of the escape glitch and failed.

Any YouTube videos of top 8 in Either sf or mvc. It better yet any clips I should watch in general.

There were breaks between everything including the Tekken Tag one that saw the stream loose 40k viewers.

I was wondering if the longer breaks with just the "Evo" splash screen played some part in killing AE's viewers. They really needed a "We'll be right back!" sign on it or something.

Or more information in general on the screen in between breaks.

It would be really cool to have updated splash screens with info-- maybe brackets, schedules, player stats/profiles, etc.

It really wasn't that bad or as derogatory as people made it out to be...people are cursing and talking slang all over the place.

Culeta means ass.

Culero means ugly.

Big whoop.

Out of the thing I have read on GAF this is one of the most perplexing. "wrong people" what?

A lot of people (myself included) didn't want to see FChamp win Marvel because he's an ass, and has said personal shit about players (beyond just you suck or whatever) and has done some scummy shit. Also raffles. He was definitely the best player and deserved it, but it doesn't seem like most people are happy about it.

The other games I'm not sure about. PL did a repeat on MK, and I'm not sure that was unexpected. Bala getting 2nd in KOF I think was an upset, but past that I'm not sure.

i don't mind these words being thrown around, similar to 'fruad' and 'salty'... but why would you chant these things?
Those are futbol chants. Which shows how big KOF is in Mexico. (Bala and KOF were trending there)
