I just saw Sigur Rós mentioned in the Finnish thread. I used to visit last.fm pretty frequently which is how I've heard of Eluvium, but I've never listened to any of the man's music. I like Sigur Rós well enough, but they're like Animal Collective in that I heard about them, listened to an album (Takk for Sigur Rós, Merriweather Post Pavilion for Animal Collective) and really loved what I heard and then tried going through their other stuff and was completely turned off.

Eluvium is a mix of ambient, shoegazing, and piano music depending on which album you listen to. If you like any of that type of music I would highly recommend them.

Takk is a great album by Sigur Rós. My personal favorite of theirs is Ágætis byrjun.

I find you awesome! Some of their music could definitely make me sad if I am in that mood. I actually find most of Eluvium to be very relaxing so I like to listen to them if I am stressed. Copia is my favorite album overall by them but Zerthis Was a Shivering Human Image from Lambent Material is my favorite song to cool down to. Taken from Talk Amongst the Trees works wonders as well.

I'm more of a metal fan though, and neoclassical darkwave stuff, is a really corny name for a genre to be honest, but well thats how they call it.

Animal Collective isn't for everyone, I suppose, but maybe you should give Feels and Strawberry Jam another shot. I personally felt MPP was somewhat dull.

Wikipedia states Sigur Rós as being Ambient and Post-rock but I have always found them to be hard to place in a genre since I don't think they quite fit into either of those categories.

What bands do you listen to that are neoclassical darkwave? I like some darkwave bands but am not sure if they would be neoclassical as well.

I hate you in a very friendly way.

I saw them on their Med Sud tour and and it was a religious experience for me no matter how stupid that sounds. I just wish they had Amiina touring with them at the time as their backup band because the only thing that could have made it more amazing was if they had the classical instruments backing them up.

Jonsi came through my state when he was on tour but I couldn't make it which was a tragedy. They haven't announced here for their Valtari tour but I really wish they would.

Animal Collective isn't for everyone, I suppose, but maybe you should give Feels and Strawberry Jam another shot. I personally felt MPP was somewhat dull.

What album did you start with? Merriweather sounds different than most of their other music, and I feel like I spoiled myself by listening to that album first, rather than following the progression of their sound from album to album. I suppose it's time to reveal my shitty music taste, but there were quite a few tracks on MPP that sounded like pop songs (Bluish, My Girls, Summertime Clothes) that I latched onto, but most of the more experimental tracks didn't do much for me. I'll give Feels another listen, as Grass is the only song that I really remember (although I had fun trying to figure out what the lyrics were). I haven't given Strawberry Jam much of a chance either, and it took a while for Merriweather Post Pavilion to grow on me, so I should give the other albums the same time.

Whats interesting is that all these bands are actually very different, but I found them when I went looking for similar bands, starting with Dead Can Dance, is also interesting how they are closely related to metal acts, even though the music isn't metal at all. But is common to find metal fans that dig this music. When I was younger I went looking for medieval music or similar, which lead me to Dead Can Dance, which lead me to all the others.

First album was Feels, I think. Then maybe Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished / Danse Manatee. Then Sung Tongs, and Strawberry Jam came out (and Person Pitch), but I wasn't too keen on it at first. The rest is in order.

They also have several EPs, all of which are good, imo.

I haven't heard of most of those groups but I think Dead Can Dance is great! haha I think so too, I would call it "medieval/classical like music made by modern composers, with some liberties and rock/pop elements", but maybe is too long for a genre . Maybe I'm just a sucker for female choral, ethereal voices, which is the only thing those bands have in common. I honestly don't know how those bands ended up getting that label, I'm just going by what wikipedia told me. I wanted to organize my music library and started to check their genres, to my surprise they were categorized as such.

Maybe, I am really bad with music genres and just pretend to know a lot about them. =P

I would really love to go to Dead Can Dance but they really picked a crappy month to come here. I wish they were coming here just a couple months later and then I could have gone.

I know these guys. Atrium Carceri and Tim Hecker are probably my favorite of these.

Though in my opinion Autechre make the best ambient/drone that there is. This example in particular is more intense than it has any right to be. Though if music were relationships Autechre would be my steady (or I would be their stalker, idk)

Dead Can Dance are also great, easily my second favorite band of all time.
