Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I had issues patching. It would jump from 2mbps down to 1kbps and back up, sometimes fail so I kept restarting. Firewall on/off didn't make a difference for me. Download failed with or without firewall. My guess is servers are getting hit but I have no real clue

Hey Guys,

One of my closest friends whom I play MMO's with has fallen quite ill and has spent the last week in hospital due to a sudden autoimmune attack (first time it's happened). A bit of background, we both levelled in champions online and 80-85 when Cata came out, as well as 1-50 in SWTOR and a fair bit of EVE. He hasn't been able to get GW2 yet due to the fact he's had to spend all his money on medical bills. As such I was wondering if there was any place I could get a beta key for him so we can play together during the next beta weekend while he recovers?

If It's too hard to get a beta key I might just buy the game for him, so I would also like to ask if there's anywhere doing specials at the moment?

Much appreciated,
Arksy.

So very sorry to hear about that. :( I hope it's nothing on the serious end of the scale, and that he eventually gets better. My sympathies.
As for the beta keys, I secured a couple extra from the link provided by Anoregon; I'm guessing you did too or got that one from Dinosaur Tamer.

I seem to recall performance being just fine for EU players rolling on NA servers. We really don't have a running tally of EU players, so it's hard to say how many there will be. This is exactly the kind of thing we want an EU Officer for, I feel like we've seriously been neglecting our EuroGAF brothers and things are going to end up as last minute decisions for them.

I don't want to say "Roll on Gate of Madness" because I don't want latency issues to ruin the game for folks. I also don't want to say "Roll on Gandara" if there's only going to be 4 or 5 people there and the rest just taking a chance and going to the NA server.

Any EU Gaffers want to comment or share their thoughts? I'd love it if we could get a bunch of people testing latency in the next BWE to see if everyone rolling on the same server is viable or not.

Perfect timing; I've been wanting to share mine on this very issue for a while.

As, I'm guessing, several other European GAF members, I'm faced with the decision whether to roll on Gates of Madness, or whatever the Euro GAF server is. This choice is made perhaps less critical by the fact, as we know, that this only really affects WvW; still, the thing is that one of the things I look forward the most, is to WvW alongside Hawkian, Retro, Jira, and all the awesome guys I've met here in this and the other threads. Sure, we can still play PvE, explore dungeons together, etc. (and don't get me wrong, that's awesome), but conquering a keep alongside these people would really be cool.

On the other hand, there's several cons to that; possible lag (even though I didn't notice almost any at all in BWE2), time schedules not matching those of the main population of the server (though it might work in one's favor; valley hours would be a great time to see the consequences of failed events, or stealthily conquer forts), etc.

The alternative, playing in the Euro GAF server, could also offer benefits, like knowing GAF members (and even non-GAFfers) from the Euro zone; perhaps even from our own countries or even cities. Some might go on to become real life friends, it's happened to me and to several friends of mine in WoW. There's also the thing about having people on schedules more or less similar to your own, although in this game I don't think it's so critical as in other MMOs (no more "looking for tank" crap). The disadvantage is that, if shadows of doubt are cast about the long-term viability of even the US GAF guild, the EU one seems almost doomed from the beginning. I realize this could, in fact, be a self-fulfilling prophecy if most EuroGAFers think this way and simply roll US from the start.

So... I don't know. I really don't; I keep going back and forward on this. I was planning to play most of this BWE trying to WvW with you guys; one, to make up my mind of whether doing it is worth rolling in the US server; two, to measure exactly how different lag is from an EU server to an US one (not sure if GW2 has an in-game ping meter); and three and perhaps most importantly, because if I finally decide not to, then this BWE will be my last chance to play WvW with you all. :/

Did anyone post the link yet to the site where everyone can get keys for the final BWE?

http://www.geforce.co.uk/games-applications/pc-games/guild-wars-2/deals-promotions

I don't think they did, but the link is awesome, thanks a lot! I already secured a couple for emergencies and sent the link itself to those of my friends who could be interested. :)

I just opened the GW2 client(love the GW2 logo and theme) and is downloading some files , current status is 400 MB and is at 20% so probably is between 1 and 2 GB.

just letting know for those that have slow connections so when the beta gets closer you do not have to download all the files ,just the ones that are missing.

edit: getting some errors just close the client and open again. It start at 0% but the number of files to download gets lower .

They seem to have updated the launcher too. You put your login info in the launcher itself now.

Necro has a new double health bar, very nice for PvP.

:-( that we can no longer launch the game unless an event is going.

Although, now getting into the game is even faster. Load it up, checks for updates, click play, and you should be at the character select. Yay efficiency! Also, what's the possibility this means they put in logout to character select for BWE3?

I feel the same. I'm going back and forth cause i want to play with the GAF guys but, i think i'm leaning towards EU server now due to friend commitments among other things. I hope not all EU GAFers opt for the US server and that we are atleast represented on a EU server in some sense. It will just be a bit more tight-nit, which in a way, could be beneficial. If i have to represent on my own, i will do us proud GAF!

Is it safe to install the beta in the programs folder? Horribly dumb question, but I thought I remember someone mentioning it causes problems... >_>

I'm so fucked... Goin' on a holiday with my GF... ah well, at least I'll still have vacation upon release.

This has been me the last two BWEs. This one? Fuck no. Taking Friday off from work and I'm going to play this game for three days straight. To say I am psyched is a damned understatement of monumental proportions.

We won't know if it's an issue until the beta forums go up a day or so before, good thing is if it is still an issue you can simply move the folder without any problems.

man that guy pumps out content like there is no tomorrow, now that is a guild wars fan lol.

so the orr end-game stuff is literally like a huge open raid? fuuuuuu i want this game now!

Orr sounds so impressive, it makes all the prior calls of concern over a lack of endgame seem absolutely ridiculous in retrospect. I'm really hoping they go balls-to-the-wall with that place - like it sounds. I want to be in a fucking war.

EDIT: Was watching someone creating a Norn and the opening cinematic makes me laugh in one part. You know, the Norn are so tough, so fearless... and they're talking about the dragon and how the spirits came to them in their greatest hour of need. "[And] we heard the voices of the spirits calling us South, away from certain annihilation..." and I'm like, "So... your spirits basically told you to tuck your tail between your legs and hoof it?"

norn story line is a bit cheap to me , atleast in the beginning i havent played much of there personal story. even though so far i dont like there story i do plan on my main to be a norn warrior.

cool looking armor on norns :)

Probably way late to this, haven't stayed up to date with the thread much, but the new launcher update is pretty cool. Not sure what the point of the login on the launcher is though.

It's one less step you have to do to get in game. We'll likely be put right to the character select now.

I liked the login screen :(

I loved it. The artwork effect behind the "2" was quite artsy, and the music was perfect. The music, I'm guessing, won't be entirely gone, as there's still character selection and creation, but if the login screen itself is gone for good, I'll really miss it.

Necro has a new double health bar, very nice for PvP.

That is interesting. I wonder if it only appears when you're targetting a Necro, or does it also show up when playing one. Also, I wonder if it shows up only in Death Shroud or always. The bar is full int hat screenshot, so I'm going for "always".

I'm still thinking about it myself. It seems I have convinced exactly zero of my friends to play it (using the NVidia key giveaway as a last chance), so I don't have any commitments myself there. Again, it's a really awesome thing that we can visit other servers and this is only an issue for WvW; I still envision GAF as a single, worldwide guild.

Started watching it, seems really interesting (the background artwork is a REALLY nice touch). I'm watching it as soon as I post this. I see it's about the Unseen Ones; this'll come in handy, as GW1 lore is still where I have the most knowledge gaps, since all of it comes from the wikis.

So the other day I broke down and bought one of the charr plushies. It was so cute I took it out for photos in the most GW2ish places I could find:

That is pure gold, really :). Loved the one with him atop the Lion's Arch-like lion statue. The plush itself is tempting me, although it's a bit expensive for my economy.

Considering how epic WvW already feels at times, Orrr is bound to be really something.

There is an issue there, and that is that of the three Norn described in the books, their style of "valor" is quite different. Some of them border on the suicidal and would never flee from a dragon or a dragon minion; others are much more level-headed. Still, in the books it is described that some Norn still regularly try to defeat Jormag and his lieutenants, but they invariably lose, adding themselves to its army. Since that army was already quite large to begin with, it's not unreasonable to think that many Norn, indeed, did stand their ground against Jormag the very first time, with predictable results. So, the current Norn are those who followed the "discretion is the better part of valor" motto. Less glamorous, perhaps, but more practical.

BOOM! Right on my Charr brother!

I'm still torn between races. On the one hand I love the sylvari for their somewhat more exotic appearance and interesting story, on the other hand I love the Norn and Charr for their ferocity.

Hard to make a choice.

Guild Wars 2 Math

5 character slots.
Roll 1 of each.
Play 4-ever.

Dammit. That link to a WoodenPotatoes video posted here earlier on lore sent me on a two hour marathon through his content, and it is glorious. It has me seriously considering dedicating my weekend to getting the Defender and Guardian titles for all the campaigns, and getting all the skills, armors and weapons for my heroes and myself.

Two words.

Steve. Blum.

That should make it easier.

My roommate and I are both playing Asura. We're going to be little elf dudes that bring the heat.

I'm torn between Charr and Asura for my thief. I love everything about the Charr but their size. Even when choosing the smallest height possible, they feel so big and slow.

Want to hear dat music again? Open up your GW2 shortcut and add -useoldlauncher to the target field. This is mine:

"C:\GW2\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe" -useoldlauncher

- In the graphics menu, there is now a autodetect button
- there are two new graphic options - Render Sampling and Post-Processing
- The audio tab looks a bit different and you can now chose an audio device

Render sampling will downscale the resolution lower than the actual resolution for better performance at the obvious sacrifice of graphical quality.

I signed up for the weekend beta that's supposed to happen on the 20th and I can't wait. I've practically been on a media blackout for this game so I know very little. What's a good class for someone who likes to play mages/casters?
