yeah, People are expecting something grandeur to happen at the end. I remember everyone talked about District 9 and it's crazy ending, so I went in expecting to come out changed for life and ended up with empty feeling and disappointment. I believe expectations will either make or break the movie.

I'm not sure what can be expected of the ending? Unless the movie lives in a vaccuum, they can't bring unicorns and rainbows to gotham, neither can they kill batman (can they?). They are somewhat limited in what miracles they can bring.

And this is called the Dark Knight Rises.

I'm just pissed they don't seem to have mid-week previews in the UK - Friday is the earliest they are showing it. Was hoping to grab an early show before I go off on holiday

Hah, IGN's review is all "Bane and Catwoman aren't the Joker so therefore not good enough." Why am I not surprised. They were pretty harsh on Bane for giving the movie a 9 rating.

One thing that my friends have been talking about is that the title references dark knight as the symbol rising to the people of gotham, not Bruce himself as per BB. Some people expect passing up of the mantle type ending and I've heard one cool idea about Bane letting Batman to kill him, therefore breaking his first rule of killing. That would also be a very powerful theme; So shattering it will not happen.

The expectations are huge.

Total Film (who despite lacking in coverage and mainstream awareness like Empire, actually review better a lot of the time nowadays) give it 5/5

A smart, stirring spectacle that faces down impossible expectations to pull off a hugely satisfying end to business. Boy, you’re in for a show tonight…

For those who don't want to read the review, Hathaway, Hardy, the holy trinity of Oldman/Caine/Freeman and Bale all get praise, Joker is brought up yet again as a reason why TDK is better (but then the review says its also no shame to come second to TDK), and it's even compared to Batman & Robin.

For those that do: http://www.totalfilm.com/reviews/cinema/the-dark-knight-rises

Have to say, I can't really think of many trilogies where all three are generally regarded as 5 star movies. Obviously opinion is subjective but critical consensus seems to be like:

Bourne - 4, 4, 5
Indy - 5, 4, 5
BTTF - 5, 3, 4
Godfather - 5, 5, 2

Can only think of LOTR, Toy Story and now this. Loving it.

I'd say Bourne is a 5 - 4 - 4

Critics and the Oscars loved Ultimatum, so did I, but I can't see where it's better than Identity.

I consider it to be my personal favorite trilogy.
Which will change on the 27th.

Yeah that's what I mean, opinion is going to change those rankings but general critic (and wide audience?) think Ultimatum is the peak.

Devin Faraci ‏@devincf
My DARK KNIGHT RISES review isn't finished. Tomorrow maybe. The movie is pretty silly, entertaining, thematically hollow. Bond-esque.

Devin Faraci @devincf
Very interested in discussing the ending when the movie is released. AVENGERS remains best superhero movie of the year.

That's good to hear, since I always disagree with him.

I just need to know if Nolan has topped Fantastic Four yet in Devin's eyes.

thematically hollow?

Is he for real?

Always has to mention another superhero film.

Dark Knight was no Spider-Man 2 and Rises is no Avengers, lol.

lol sadly he is.

If there's one thing I know about Devin, he hates Batman as a character, and he thinks Batman's villians are more interesting than Batman. Devin disliked Batman begins but gave a good review to TDK for this very reason.

And since Batman plays the core of the story, (Joker was a bigger part of story in TDK) I expect him to trash TDKR.

God damn I wish he would drop into a hole and never rise from it.

Is this guy just a marvel fanboy or what?

No, just a complete and utter douche.

I'd never heard of Devin, so I went googling. Didn't make it past the search results. "Badass Digest"? You fucking serious?

Criticizes film for being thematically hollow, then praises Avengers.

Just so everyone's clear, Devin is the dude who wrote the piece on Avengers 'Defeating Irony and Cynicism': http://badassdigest.com/2012/05/20/the-avengers-defeated-irony-and-cynicism/

Guy's been at war with Nolan's Batman since 2005, IIRC.

He is easily one of the worst critics around, so it doesn't bother me. Reviews are good so far though.

Never change, GAF.

I'm just laughing because the same shit happened for TDK, Inception, this, and probably every movie Nolan will ever make from here on out. Negative reviews are instantly dismissed.

Have some backbone, people.

If you're going to do this, wait until it's someone other than Devin Faraci.

There's always a conspiracy. On TDK GAF told me that NYC critics had it out for the movie.
Well, 3 of 6 low ratings for TDK on metacritic are from New York critics. And 6 of the 9 for Inception were.

You are defending a city so corrupt, haters have infiltrated every level of its critics circle.

You're a little premature with this, bro. It's Devin, he's never likes Nolan's Batmans

I actually like Devin's reviews. Though I don't agree with him all the time his stuff is at least well written and he can articulate his thoughts and point of view unlike 99% of the film 'journalists' out there.

And to be fair he didn't like TDK and that's fine. No everyone can like everything. It's almost as if people take someone having different tastes as a personal attack.

And if anyone thinks that Devin is 'out to get' Batman or Nolan he savaged ASM in his review even though he's a HUGE Spider Man fan so it's not as if he's blindly pro Marvel even though the notion of such a thing existing is actually stomach churning.

It is what it is.

To be fair this is just fandom in general. Truly it is the road to madness.

I found the fact that Spider Man 'fans' were retroactively dismissing Raimi's films as garbage when they saw ASM particularly galling.

Especially when ASM is a weightless film with zero emotional direction that isn't fit to be compared to Spider Man 2.

But there we are.

I honestly don't give a shit about these reviews. The public reception is more important to me.

This isn't a movie I'll watch or not watch based on the reviews. It's an obligatory one, so I'll just take my own conclusions and that'll be it.

Just bought my tickets today for an IMAX viewing on Sunday.

I guess this movie isn't doing that well. I expected them all to be sold out.

New IMAX screen in Toronto that no one seems to know about. Thank god. Scotiabank was sold out of all the good seats until next Thursday. Can't wait!

Edit: When it comes to reviews, the place I trust least for Nolan reviews is GAF. Too many militant Nolan defenders on here. There are a few exceptions of course.

I'm premature in discussing history? It happened with TDK and Inception. But alright, let's wait for the first bad non-Faraci review.

No you're premature in calling out GAF for overreacting to bad press. "McWeeney" on the other hand, has good taste. ;)

Oh yeah, they're changing the Yonge/Dundas square location to a Cineplex. Must be done by now I think.

Devin Faraci is a terrific reviewer; I often disagree with his opinions violently, but he's a very good writer and can't be dismissed. For what it is worth, he liked The Dark Knight and gave it a good review.

I didn't pick up my tickets there though. I'm going to the IMAX screen at Empress Walk in North York. I hope it's good.

Does Yonge/Dundas have an IMAX screen?

From Drew's review :

The technical side of things is sharper than ever before, and if this really is the last film that Wally Pfister shoots, he's going out in style. Even more of this film was shot with IMAX cameras than "The Dark Knight," and it makes for some breathtaking visual moments that match the emotional impact of the film's operatic final act. Hans Zimmer's work here is brutal, percussive, borderline crazy. It feels like things are starting to shake to pieces, like the entire world is about to implode. I found the final movement of the film, a good thirty minutes or so, almost unbearably emotional, and I think it may be the best stretch in any of the films

Hells yea

Yeah I think it recently got one.

I'm not going to that one either - I'm going to the square one imax theatre in Mississauga. Though, I commute downtown every day so I'll probably see today if the sign has changed.

Robbie Collin of The Telegraph is raving on twitter:

  • Just out of The Dark Knight Rises. Can't quite believe Nolan's audacity. It's astounding - outstanding even - and as cold as polished steel.
  • The plot has a novelistic scope and it's every bit as much of an ensemble movie as Inception. Here Batman is a symbol more than a character.
  • Themes and imagery from BB and TDK are woven throughout, but Nolan's influences are bigger: Dickens, Eisenstein, Lang are all in there.
  • So yes, it is a five-star, blow-your-head-off triumph. Can see it being many people's film of 2012

I am intrigued to know that Fire Rises is the name of a chapter in Tales of Two Cities by Dickens. Maybe that is how Nolan makes coup de'tat look believable.

Another UK reviewer:

@EthanRunt

I don't want to totally dismiss his point of view because it's negative but he describes himself on Twitter as...,

Filmmaker, Film blogger, Film reviewer, plus author.

Filmmaker AND Film reviewer?!

Personally that's a 'hanging offence' for me. That just lends itself to all sorts of 'conflicts of interest'.

Fuck that guy.

Wait but Anne and JGL save it? So its still good?

Anyway I was away for the weekend.

What did I miss? FJ troll of Nolan yet again?
