I can't stress enough how much Neeson added to that character. On paper, he's very one dimensional, lots of hokey lines, monologues, etc. Yet he infused the role with so much weight, character, charm and pathos and made it so much more than that.

On the other hand, not to take anything away from Ledger, but the Joker is a 50x flashier role and easier to sell.

It's the same reason why Harvey Dent is also more impressive than Joker.

I disagree. I think you can argue that not many people could step into that joker role and pull that off. Not saying no one else could do it but very few could so convincingly. Liam did a great job but I can imagine may actors could do just about the same and some even better. Same for Dent. There was nothing special about their performances. They did their jobs as actors.

Ledger on the other hand made me believe in my heart of hearts that he was genetically engineered for that role... maybe he was.
