I can't stress enough how much Neeson added to that character. On paper, he's very one dimensional, lots of hokey lines, monologues, etc. Yet he infused the role with so much weight, character, charm and pathos and made it so much more than that.

On the other hand, not to take anything away from Ledger, but the Joker is a 50x flashier role and easier to sell.

It's the same reason why Harvey Dent is also more impressive than Joker.

It begins.

What's up with his hand? Don't tell me he's doing that thing from Of Mice and Men.

At one point he says, 'Excuse me, I have a city to destroy'

And somehow it sounds fine.

Playing joker also had more risk, Ra's was safer. So yes those who say Joker is not the top most villain in the series so far are smoking some nice crystal yo

A lot of Batman foes have the potential to be horrifying. Scarecrow is the obvious one, but thinking it through, one that would work great to Argento-esque sensibilities is Ventriloquist. Could really screw with people's irrational fears of dummies.

Probably my favorite thing about Neeson's Rhas is that, even in the end when he's trying to destroy Gotham, the mentor in him is still present. He's still trying to teach Bruce. Not good things, mind you, but he's still trying to guide him.

I fucking love the Ventriloquist. I don't care how stupid the concept is, it's creepy when done right. All the BTAS episodes with him in them are among my favorites.

got in a wreck (possible dubious reason) a couple years ago. It's apparently more or less dead. Think it's the nerves. Hear that Shia La BOOF has similar problems with his hand.

Now I want a sitcom where Neeson plays Ra's as a high school teacher in a tough inner city.

He doesn't think he's a bad guy.

I disagree. I think you can argue that not many people could step into that joker role and pull that off. Not saying no one else could do it but very few could so convincingly. Liam did a great job but I can imagine may actors could do just about the same and some even better. Same for Dent. There was nothing special about their performances. They did their jobs as actors.

Ledger on the other hand made me believe in my heart of hearts that he was genetically engineered for that role... maybe he was.

Doctors operated for four hours to repair nerve damage in his shoulder and arm.[32] On CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight he stated that he is left handed but cannot move the fingers of his left hand. He wears a compression glove to protect against blood pooling due to non-movement. His publicist announced he was expected to make a full recovery.

This is actually a good point.

Yeah, I think you just hit the heart of the matter. So good.

NONONONONONONONO

Both were amazing performances that most certainly could not be filled by any actor.

I really disagree with this. I can't imagine any other actor in the role of these characters because the people that were cast were so pitch-perfect. They all did amazing work with the roles they had.

I've always found one of the saddest things about Ledger's death was him not seeing how his interpretation of the character was received by critics and the public given the amount of time and energy he invested.

Seriously. Like just imagine if Ken Watanabe and Neeson's roles were reversed. Would have been atrocious and Rhas wouldn't have been memorable at all.

Imagine trying to understand Watanabe during the training montage. Bruce would have ended up like Bane.

ID tend to agree with solo here, less so for Dent as honestly i did not care for him, but Neeson was the marriage of perfect cast and direction, the best villain this series has known to date.
