• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

You are automatically de-leveled to the appropriate level of the content you're in. You can be level 80 in the starter zones, but it will lower your stats (including your gear) down to level 5. That means you can go back and play with friends, help alts, whatever. It doesn't work the other way, however; you can't be level 5 and be buffed up to level 80, for example.

Should note that it does for PvP though.

K yea that's what I remember hearing now. Is there a range at which content doesn't scale for a zone? Assume this means you can't out level an area, but assume that theres a level range that doesn't involve scaling in relation to the zone? Or does it always scale to a set lvl?

Always scaled down to whatever set level for that area. And that is not a zone-wide thing, each zone has a multitude of areas and a set scaling level for each one. Sometimes it will even scale you down a single level.

I'm not 100% sure but I think each part of a zone has a level setting based on the enemies in that area and players are brought down to that particular level. It doesn't seem to be a zone-wide level.

But no, you can't outlevel an area, as it will always de-level you to the appropriate level. This means you can stay in a zone to complete all of the content without getting xp / gold / reward penalties.

Thanks, though I think our times dont sync up very well, was at work at just got home now. Will see if I can perhaps get something done tonight.

As you wish. Add me to friends list (same as neogaf name) if you still haven't gotten through that.

On another note, anyone know why Teknopathetic (a-redname) does not quote people like everyone?

You do get loot penalties tho. I ran around last BWE with my lvl 29ish Guardian through lower lvl areas and got that lvl items, not my own. I tested this through several areas, but it is a common misconception that has been going around this thread that you get your own lvl items.

It scales to a specific level based on the zone and subarea of the zone you're in. So if you're fighting mobs that are say level 3 you might be 5 and if you're fighting mobs that are 8 you might be 10 or 11. The most important thing is you obviously do lose some of your overall power, however you still feel more powerful than you did at that level, but they take your HP down to about what it actually is at your downscaled level so you can never just walk into somewhere and herp derp faceroll without any worries. Those mobs will kill you without hesitation.

Might have just been your own experience. ArenaNet has stated that level-appropriate gear will drop for players when they're de-leveled to make lower level content worth doing.

To that, I would add that when I took my low-20s warrior back to Queensdale to show my brother the ropes, I ended up replacing an armor piece or two and my longbow with drops. And I wasn't lagging behind on gear either.

What's the cheapest place to preorder this in Europe that ships to Sweden? Cheapest I've found so far is Amazon with £34.97 free shipping. Don't care if it's digital or not.

Inky, you do get items for your level, don't throw misconceptions of your own around. I killed the ice brood mother in wayfarer foothills at level 23 and got a green rifle for my level.

Well, I only got lower level items for myself and I tested this around different areas exactly because I heard so much in this thread that you got your own level stuff. That was not my experience.

Might be that you only get a small percentage of these instead of the regular rates but I never, ever got an upgrade, and I played a lot of PvE, in fact, that is 80% of my BWE time right there.

It always scales. This is amazing, because they can release any level content in the game, and it will still be challenging. This is the horizontal movement they want in the game, instead of a typical harder and harder progression with loot.

Ah good fewer worlds. Also like the decision of making WvWvW matchmaking a daily thing at launch, I was worried that WvWvW would be very boring the first month due to bad mismatches.

Yeah it's not like you're getting it every 3 kills or something, the drop rates aren't amazingly high but they do happen multiple times in a play session*

*Your play session may not be as long as mine are.

For future reference Jira, it's frowned upon to post up the entire article as a post. Rather you quote aspects of it and then link the post.

Ah, I did it for people who may not be able to view a page due to work firewalls and whatnot. I'll fix it.

They went from 48 NA servers to 18 ?

That is a huge change - but the better decisions since I was seeing some really low populations in specific PvE zones (Norn 10-20 zones specifically were barren).

What I didn't get is that you could go in WvW but you might not have or your skills unlocked, and got destroyed as a result. It seems like if you're going to level up through PvP exclusively then you're going to need to get in pretty early.

Hmm? This is the first I've heard of that. Magazine scans and online articles, yes, but news updates? I see people doing that all the time for breaking news, so people at work and such can read it.

The ideal is medium population; enough people that you never feel like the world is empty, but not so many that you can't queue up for WvW and get pushed into Overflow all the time.

They went from 96 overall to 42, but now I realize you're just counting NA.

I'm pumped to get my first taste this weekend. If I like it I have a 20% GMG coupon ready to go.

I'm getting antsy for the BWE. I want to test out my necro build a bit and see how useful might is...

If Henge ends up being Medium/High population and Gate of Madness goes Full would we stay on Henge?

I'm getting the sinking feeling no matter what server we go to it will be a total fuckfest.

This massive reduction in server options leads me to believe no matter what we will be queuing.

It'll be about noon Pacific / 3PM Eastern on Friday, so you've only got about 48 hours to wait.

Not sure. We'll make that decision after we see how this weekend goes. We're actually kind of lucky to have them rolling on our planned server, as this gives us a chance to see how bad it could get, in theory.

Well, if you read the article Jira posted/linked to, they say that they have very precise controls for population management that they can use without taking the servers down. It stands to reason that they will monitor queues and such and try and divert populations accordingly. For example, if they see a server that's starting to have queues during prime play time, they may lower the cap on it to prevent people from rolling there anymore, diverting them to a different server.

Good god, the people in the Sylvari and Asura areas are going to be packed in like cattle. Impressive achievement on ANET's part though.

Hay, tell me about it. It's going to be udder madness and lots of people are going to have a cow over it. I veal sorry for them; as soon as I herd about these changes, I decided to steer clear of those zones.

I might just spend the usual calf-hour (oh, who am I kidding, I'll take for-heifer as usual) creating my character and then moove on as quickly as possible.

They cud have planned this better, and if they don't fix this bull, I'll have a serious beef with ArenaNet from here on out. This is the last straw.

Moo!

When does Beta weekends start, anyone know the exact time in GMT? or better CET

In the past, it has been Noon Pacific / 3PM Eastern / 7PM GMT / 9PM CET

I think. I always have to look up the time zone conversions.

Reading this really mooved me. Thanks Retro.

I spent too long looking for a way to work "Rumen" in there. The best I could do was "Room in" but it just didn't work. NEXT TIME, GADGET, NEXT TIME!

You're RAMEN all over with these NOODLES of information regarding the words you are using.

ahahaha

We need a new thread for the BWE, I think. New threads for new news/discussion. This is just for the Launch Date.
