No love for The Master? My most-anticipated of the year, as there's no Gravity anymore. Can't wait for all those too, KTS would be second for me.

I dunno. I was lukewarm on TWBB (blasphemous to many, no doubt). If its more Magnolia/Boogie Nights than TWBB, then sure.

Got my Dark Knight Rises soundtrack in the mail.

Time to add it to my MP3 player and perhaps listen to a few tracks before the midnight showing tomorrow?

Can you give examples of what you're talking about?

Ramirez - she gave away harvey dent, because some throwaway line in the beginning of TDK about her mother being "in hospital".

The "other traitor" who's name I don't even remember.

The "20 year man officer" - I didn't even know what his name was stevens untill batgaf mentioned it a few times in this thread.

Honestly, all these could've been combined to one character.

In Inception, Ariadnne is recruited as an "architect" and all she does is break some fucking glass and bring up Mal to Cobb. She is a completely useless character. I mean anyone could've constructed the dream space (even cobb) and we would've down one useless character.

Batfans are launching an attack on Devin Faraci due to his review. Hilarious, delusion stuff:

@Oliver_Klothsof:

LOL.

Nolan can't touch any of Kubrick's great films with a ten-foot pole.

@devincf TDK is Nolan's Full Metal Jacket. Memento his Clockwork Orange. Prestige is his Eyes Wide Shut. Inception is more smart than 2001

Wonderful

I find it fascinating that Nolan has the biggest Internet fan following of all the directors. I mean there are a few Spielberg fanboys here and a few Cameron fans there but nothing as larger as Nolan's. And its not due to his age either cause there are far younger directors out there too.

With that said, larger fan following means greater chance of wackos and far greater chances of hate clubs too. So it doesnt just go both ways, it goes all ways. #crazytalk

I remember back in 2010, pre-Inception, there was this big March Madness bracket for Best Director Alive. Everybody from the big legends Coppolla and Eastwood, the indie prodigies Sodenbergh and QT, foreign directors like Miyazaki and Almodóvar, new guys like Edgar Wright or Alfonso Cuaron. Nolan managed to run through his bracket, breezed past Martin Campbell and Frank Darabont, took down Zemecks, somehow managed to beat both Cameron and Spielberg, and put 45% on the eventual victor Martin Scorsese.

That guy has quite the fanbase. It completely eclipses other recent, popular American filmmakers like Fincher or Arnofosky. His following is on a whole new level, even if the amount of movies he made is a relatively small amount.

I've been rewatching the first 19 movies from the 007 series through my DVR (thanks Encore Bond Month!) as prep for TDKR.

Am I doing it right?

Roger Moore aged so damn fast it's scary. Each movie he gets fatter and out of shape.

So you're saying the secret is his vests?

But if she's not there who will the other characters infodump exposition to?

Hah. I'd put him ahead of Campbell, Darabont, and Zemeckis. Probably not Cameron or Spielberg though. Still got a long career ahead of him though

It has more to do with the decade he became popular in. You'd be surprised how many young people "grew up" on his movies now.

Am I the only one that doesn't get the fairly common opinion that The Prestige is one of Nolan's best films? It's a great flick, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't hold a candle to Memento, Inception, or TDK for me. It's basically a really good version of a Shymalan movie.

I will cut you.

It's Nolan's 5th best movie IMO. Still damn good though.

I just hate Eyes Wide Shut too much. Maybe I was expecting more Kidman sex scenes... *shrugs*

Nolan's fanbase is easy to understand though. There are some directors that make a lot of great critically acclaimed movies, but Nolan manages to do that while making them be the type of movies that most people find appealing. Thrillers/Batman/etc...and he does them all quite well. Good twists, good acting, etc...he knows how to bang em out and they taste grrrreattt (still talking about the movies).

Totally, I was 10 when I saw memento. It blew my fucking mind. The entire fundamentals of movie making, to my adolescent head, was flipped upside down.

Has Expendable seen it yet? i'd like to know what he thinks about the movie.

Exactly. As silly as it sounds to some of you, Batman Begins was my "Star Wars." It was the film that made me want to make movies. I was 12 when I saw it for the first time and it's the film that made me go. "Woah, I wanna do that for a living."

Now, it's probably not even in my top 20 of all time, but it's a movie that holds a special place in my heart and a big reason why I'm such a big fan of Nolan.

We're hockey and movies bros. Just not Nolan Batman movies bros.
I know... I wish I *got* Nolan and post-T2 James Cameron so I coulda been part of the NeoGAF-movie triumvirate.
Kubrick never made a bad film, but Full Metal Jacket is the closest he came. Eyes Wide Shut is amazing.
See, that is exactly how I feel, although FMJ fanboys would absolutely DESTROY your ass if they came in here.

Quality over quantity.

Hey, Terrence Malick's only made five feature films since 1973, and depending on who you ask any or all of them are great/masterpieces and he's one of the greatest American directors of all-time.

People love that Nolan. Dude makes an heady original thriller about dreams within dreams(within dreams), heavy on exposition and ideas, and it makes $800 million WW. Can't hate on that kind of success, I suppose. Must be doing something right.

Eyes Wide Shut is my favorite Kubrick film. Which is bizarre considering it's his latest one.

Followed by Dr. Strangelove and Barry Lyndon probably. I'll agree that FMJ is his worst.

This is kind of a vague complaint though and I could easily see it being a strength in other films. The type of thing where every little detail is relevant to the plot.

Also Ariadne was clearly an anchor for the audience, so that Nolan could explain what was going on while also advancing the plot. I can understand if you didn't feel good about but I feel like it was kind of necessary for a film that utilized a premise that needed to be explained to the audience. There are a lot more things wrong with Inception than Ariadne's character.

I am not surprised by Scullis review, I mean look at the review of the AP critic, she always gives big blockbusters positives yet she didnt like it, similarly some others. But some other critics have called it much more positive

Went through all the reviews up to now more thoroughly

34% say On Par with TDK/BB (fav of the 2) 38 *

21% say Exceeds TDK/BB (fav of the 2) 23 *

44% say Not as Good as TDK/BB (fav of the 2) 48 *

* Includes both positive and negative reviews

Yep, I love Mallick and the way he constructs films. Truely one of the best.

Wow the opinions on Kubrick flicks here is more polarizing than I thought.

I liked FMJ a lot, more then Eyes Wide Shut. Not his best or even his top 5 but still very good.

You sir are fucking crazy. 2001, Barry Lyndon, Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, Path of Glory - take your pick, but one of those 5 is his best. Clockwork is my personal fav. FMJ is at the bottom. Alone.

Totally agree about FMJ. Except I'd put The Shining in his top 3 or 5. Adore that masterpiece. I also love Eyes Wide Shut and even The Killing, which seem to be minority opinions.

Haha no, it's not a vague complaint at all, and it's not a strength in any other film. TDK is full of useless characters, and Inception is the same.

And for Kubrick, I'd say Solo's pretty much there, but my top 5 would include The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut on most days. I think those two are some of the most rewatchable movies he's done. In fact, Kubrick is too strong to have a top 5, so fuck it, I won't try.
