EA Joins coalition against DOMA

Electronic Arts has joined with other US employers in signing an amicus brief against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), asking the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to find the law unconstitutional. DOMA defines marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman.

Beyond being good PR in the face of the United States' changing attitudes toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities; being against DOMA also helps alleviate significant human resources headaches.

"DOMA presents a number of problems for businesses like EA," the company wrote in a statement. "It creates regulatory, tax, and discrimination complications for employers, and that's why we're standing against it. The underlying lawsuit impacts all employers no matter how big or small, and no matter the industry, and we encourage other business to join these efforts."

EA has been publicly supportive of its LGBT employees, condoning presence at both Seattle and San Francisco Pride this year. The company also participated in the "It Gets Better" campaign.

Good on 'em.

It affects them as an employer, so it makes sense for them to take a stance.
Yeah they're pretty active with LGBT support with their staff:

Do not read the comments for that article. :/

There aren't many sites where I actually read the comments. Hell the company I work for right now implemented facebook comments, and even with people's faces and identities obvious they are still complete aholes to each other.

Yes. But I do see where you are coming from. I just prefer video game news from video game developers. I can understand this is some good publicity for their company.

What? That's like saying a company shouldn't release news about their health care plan for their employees because it has nothing to do with their industry. Your perspective makes literally no sense.

Thats nice of them I appreciate their support. Even tho I dont see myself getting married, it would be nice to know that I could if I wanted to in the future.

I cannot unsee Sheapard with another man now, that banner is classic!

Good for them though, such a large employer needs to stand up for their employees. It's good to see.

I suppose. I mean, all we ever get from EA is video game news, for the most part. It's not like video games take a back seat. It's good to see them take a stand for something meaningful and be public about it.

"Well, I guess I have to be against Gay Rights now."

Wow.

People honestly cannot handle someone they don't like doing something positive.
Against my better judgement I read some of those. I always do get a good chuckle from people's attempts to justify their discrimination by touting that companies shouldn't "get involved" with social policy.

Now, please add a GLBT protagonist to Battlefield or Medal of Honor.

I have nothing against the LGBT community but let's not start shoehorning in characters to fill some agenda. If adding the character is going to add something meaningful to the game then go ahead but don't start throwing characters just because.

Unless that was a sarcastic post, then by all means ignore me. ^^ lol

Well it only makes sense. Lady on lady time is responsible for at least 70% of the sales of Bioware games.

But seriously, good for them.

Are you serious? Are you incapable of empathy for those of us that are unable to marry?

People who whine about other companies not focusing on other things annoy the hell out of me like they stopped working for an entire day just to send out a press release. I always want to ask shouldn't YOU be doing something better than posting on a message board

I still don't understand why we have a law based on religion in the U.S. It's ridiculous. So much for separation of church and state. People need to get their heads out of their asses. Good on EA for adhering to common sense, which is unfortunately not as common as we once thought.

I suggest you'd not go down that path of conversation as you are now entering into "Offtopic" territory.

It's not shoehorning in for an agenda. Why is straight the default?

How dare companies have health care. They should be making video games.

I was unaware of how many people I was going to offend with my opinion, but I was wondering if this should be on video game discussion at this point. It is no longer about the development of a video game, but instead about a company, who happens to make video games and their stance on a particular issue.

I am not against gay marriage or any of that sort of thing, I am happy for their continued support.

Games are made to adhere to preferences. No reason to not have gay characters, but there is reason to not make that a center when most of the players wont be able to identify with that.

News are made about company dealings all the time, it is not directly related to games, but not really off topic either. Its a loose association I guess.
