Does anything else think that Nolan kinda ruggles at directing fisticuff scenes? The Bane/Batman fight was pretty cool, but it had some weird shit going on. Also, that one scene near the end where Batman drops in saves Gordon-Levitt from some thugs looked laughable at the time. It was basically an Assassin's Creed brawl come to life. They all had guns and they all pretty much just walked up to him, welcoming a beat-down.

Also, fuck that scene with Catwoman doing the cartwheel in the prison. Jesus, Nolan. Alsoalso, I really hate that these movies have to be somewhat family friendly. Is there one speck of blood in the whole film? Does not match the gritty tone whatsoever.

edit: oh man, above poster disagrees

Also, and this is a smaller thing, but I felt like there were no Inception snow-mobile moments where things were getting too hard to keep track of. I liked all of the action throughout the movie, including and especially the third-act. The cops vs thugs fight was very well done.

Bane breaking Batman (the whole fight, not just the 'iconic' back-break) was a really great moment. Lots of audible gasps from people in the audience.

We have a new contender for weird, out-of-character, play for audience laugh moment

"I'M BATMAN."

*cut over to previously never shown in scene bum from twenty minutes earlier*

"NICE COAT."

vs.

"THASH WHAT THAT FEELSH LIKE."

That was the Funny or Die Batman moment.

There is nobody else around. It is purely for the audience to laugh at Batman. It is T3 Elton glasses all over again.

I had no problem with the "so that's what that feels like" line. Bruce was out of the game for eight years, he's not at his prime. It was funny that Selina could quietly ditch him.

People mutter to themselves. That's a thing.

And why do hardened evil doers join our suicidal cause? Bain is scary? They get guns? The League of Shadows has a comprehensive medical and dental plan? Oh nevermind...
Is this a serious question in the modern era? Really? It's a barely heightened version of real life.

Bane vs Bats fight was superb. Absolutely brilliant, the lack of music, Bane's dialogue, the fact you could hear every thud and kick. Fantastic.

when the mask cracked, jesus christ

Was that scene in IMAX? I can't wait to see it in IMAX Sunday week.

Nice.

Love it when Dagget(?) let his Wayne business position get the better of him and he threatens Bane. Then Bane just rests his hand on his shoulder and asks if he feels powerful, if he feels he has power over him.

Some of the nitpicks are annoying, but eh, it's a Nolan film. :P

That scene gave me chills! Too bad none of the actions scenes later matched it. The cop vs merc scene was cool.

Choreography lacked, I thought. There were some stupid looking moves by both parties. The sound and whatnot was handled well, though. Also, had I not known about the back-break, I'd probably not have assumed until later scenes that he'd suffered such critical damage to his body. This isn't necessarily a gripe, though; just an observation.

The same sentiment could have been done with a look. I really hated it because it was at the expense of Batman. Also, Catwoman in not a ninja! She shouldn't be standing toe to toe in fights with the criminals Bats take out JUST BECAUSE.

It is something I hate in so many movies. It would be like Murtaugh being able to give as good a fight as Riggs. One we know has had years upon years of grueling mental and physical training etched into them, whilst the other is just as proficient JUST BECAUSE.

Catwoman played like random chick who can kick ass #4785 that I don't buy in movies. Now if Talia were to have started kicking ass, I could completely buy that.

There was so much done in this movie to undermine exactly what Bruce/Batman is. Batman may inspire the everyman, but he IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT the everyman. That is the same reason why the allusion to Blake becoming the next Bats made me roll me eyes.

I'm sure people will complain about John Blake's reveal at the end (just have some fun damnit), but I really liked the twist they gave into the Miranda's and Bane's story.

I'm pretty sure the movie showed that he's not the everyman, mang. He's was like the supercop!

I think Bane vs Batman will go down as one of the great fight scenes of cinema. One of the many highlights of the film for me.

I avoided TDKR rumours completely, so Miranda's reveal caught me by surprise. Even if you did suspect she was, there's a lot of misdirection at play, which makes you believe it was Bane climbing out of that hole.

I thought the whole point of Kyle was that she took out people primarily by manipulating people around her, taking advantage of crude weaknesses and generally playing dirty. Which is the case for the entire movie, no? She wouldn't have been able to take on all of those guys without Batman.

Oh boy. It was a great scene. It was my favourite scene in the whole movie. Chills.

But c'mon son!

In 50 years, maybe. The cultural size of Batman, the fact the scene was great. I don't think it's beyond the means of belief that it could be, you know? 2001 was derided when it came out wasn't it?

My five favourite scenes

Bane/Bats fight
Bruce and Selina dancing
Bats returning and the Molossus remix playing in the car chase
Alfred leaving
The idea of Cotillard naked

You really don't want to start 2001 comparisons when discussing this movie. This happens with almost every Nolan movie and it gets more ridiculous every time.

Nolans coreography is never fully perfect. From fights where punches/kicks never really connect to cars getting blown over (clearly just a small gasoline effect and then suddenly the vehicle just flips).

Also, there was no over-the-top action setpiece like the semi-trailer flip in TDK. That was awesome and creative. I don't recall anything like that in TDKR.

Oh I'm not suggesting they're the same quality or will have the same impact. I'm just suggesting that when that came out, who'd have thought it would be one of the most heralded films of all time?

I'm just saying, there's no way you can say yes or no to the fight scene being a classic. I guess.

Can anyone tell me the scenes that were in the sneak preview before the IMAX MI4 prints?

It's literally what you see in the movie from Gordon at the funeral to the plane flying off with Bane hanging from it, except with terrible vocal audio.

Well for comic book films at least, the fight is unmatched. Sure, Asian films can crank out amazing choreography, but I think TDKR trumps many of them with context.

I'm gonna copy these two posts from the CHUD forums because I think they are spot on and hilarious:

Post 1

So we have an objective, level a city, why again? Eco terrorism? I guess... even though launching a nuke is probably going to do significant damage to the city and the surrounding environment for decades. Oh well...

Regardless, we need a nuke. So instead of stealing one of the ten of thousands of nukes and dirty bombs stockpiled in countries all over the world we are going to weaponize a prototype new energy device. Yes, we willl have to find and then kidnap the one scientist in the world who has figured out how to do that, but yeah, that plan makes sense. Sort of. Why again? Cause its complicated and cool?

But to get this device, we are going to bankrupt the primary funder of this prototype device by forcing him to give control of the company and the research to our villan. How do we do this? Well we will launch a public attack on a stock exchange and then execute a series of financial transactions driving him into bankruptcy and forcing him to give control to our villian. How exactly would these transactions not be immediately reversed and cancelled? Why wouldn't all trades be immediately suspended? And even if it wasn't, how on earth are we to know our hero will provide access and control of the device to our villian?

So now we take the city. Again, I'm not sure why, given we already have a device, but blowing up things and seizing control of a major city looks cool. To garned the support (or compliance) of the local populace we then blow up their beloved football team and free 1000 of the worst criminals. Yeah, doesn't sound its going to inspire any kind of loyalty from the population at large, but whaterver.

And why do hardened evil doers join our suicidal cause? Bain is scary? They get guns? The League of Shadows has a comprehensive medical and dental plan? Oh nevermind...

Ok, so now we have the device and take an entire city hostage with a plan to detonate the device immediately if we are attacked, or if anyone leaves the city, or if 3 months go by! Say again???? We are seizing the city for three months to only blow it up anyways. Why? Cause we're evil and thats how we roll? We are making a political statement? A long winded 3 month long statement?

What a mess...

talk about overthinking....

it makes sense if Talia wanted to not just utterly destroy the symbol of Batman but also all the public institutions that Bruce Wayne and his father/mother has fought to protect.

eg: Bane raiding Applied Sciences and uses the weapons against Gotham

Yeah, its overly complicated.....but similar to the Incredibles and the "monologuing", its a trope of the superhero myth. (infact didn't Batman make reference to Talia's monologuing and her failure to set off the bomb? XD )

That's true, for cultural significance it is far weightier than something like The Raid is, despite The Raid obviously being a much better choreographed fighting movie.

'That's a lovely lovely voice.'

*click*

*bam bam bam bam bam bam bam....

...bam bam bam bam bam bam bam....

...bam bam bam bam bam bam bam."

:oooooooooooooooooooooooo....

Walked out of this movie confused. I enjoyed it, but holy shit there's so many things that just made me question wtf they were thinking. A few thoughts:
-Bane's voice. I honestly couldn't understand most of his dialogue, and it just sounded shit. Such a strange choice for his voice.
-Psyched they included Robin, but isn't his name Dick Grayson? Also, he was just some dude who was a cop, noting special. JGL is the fucken man though.
-Why the fuck did they spend 5 (?) months in Gotham? Just to blow it up? So convoluted.
-Too much daytime, not enough Batman.
-How hasn't everyone guessed that Bruce Wayne is Batman? Batman disappears the same time as Bruce hides away, and then they appear at the same time, and then they fucking DIE at the same time. Surely it wouldn't be a stretch to think that a fit male in his 30's who is a fucking billionaire orphan who is in charge of company that creates military grade weaponry is the goddamned Batman.
-Catwoman didn't irritate me as much as I thought she would.
-Marion has some cans
-Batman/Bane fights were odd. Why would Batman straight up fist fight Bane? Where are the gadgets?

That was the Funny or Die Batman moment.

There is nobody else around. It is purely for the audience to laugh at Batman. It is T3 Elton glasses all over again.

Is that any worse AT ALL than "I gotta get me one of those!"

Come now - Begins is the worst of the trilogy in terms of awful one-liners :)

I don't necessarily mean for culture, but for the story and characters of the film. I felt the weight of the fight, and what's at stake. Instead of "this is awesome", I thought "this matters." And to pull that off, you need a lot more going on throughout the film to get you to that point.

Gordon's line isn't a self-conscious joke at the expense of his character. It's a DAT ASS line for a sexy car and completely believable.

I will try and answer some of these. Do not mistake it for GAF defence force!

-Bane's voice. I honestly couldn't understand most of his dialogue, and it just sounded shit. Such a strange choice for his voice.

Loved it myself but understandable that some didn't.

-Psyched they included Robin, but isn't his name Dick Grayson? Also, he was just some dude who was a cop, noting special. JGL is the fucken man though.

He wasn't Robin, that was just a fun little joke from Nolan. He's the next Batman (!). The name is obviously to throw people off the scant that he'll be Robin or Batman, and that he's Nolan's own creation.

Why the fuck did they spend 5 (?) months in Gotham? Just to blow it up? So convoluted.

I guess so Bruce could watch his city die.

-Too much daytime, not enough Batman.

Haha. Guess Bane needed it that way to get Bats out in the open.

Surely it wouldn't be a stretch to think that a fit male in his 30's who is a fucking billionaire orphan who is in charge of company that creates military grade weaponry is the goddamned Batman.

Got me there!

-Batman/Bane fights were odd. Why would Batman straight up fist fight Bane? Where are the gadgets?

He hasn't used gadgets at all so far in any fist fights, guess he thought he could take Bane without them.

did anyone else have a moment in the middle of the movie, when things are well and truly fucked up, where it was like "a man in a bat costume is going to have really, really hard time fixing this"

did anyone else have a moment in the middle of the movie, when things are well and truly fucked up, where it was like "a man in a bat costume is going to have really, really hard time fixing this"

I thought all that was just setting up to there's no one that can fix this except for a man in a bat costume.

I thought all that was just setting up to there's no one that can fix this except for a man in a bat costume.

oh yeah, sure. It's just the scale of it was so ridiculously over the top (in a good way) that for a while there it was just bleak.

Gordon's line isn't a self-conscious joke at the expense of his character. It's a DAT ASS line for a sexy car and completely believable.

Okay, what about "Nice Coat!" from Bats to the hobo - that was completely silly and totally killed the tone of his triumphant debut.

I think you might be being a little selective in your nitpicking.

As for the "So that's what that feels like" line - yeah it's dumb, but if it was a comic I could totally see that corny dialogue in a speech bubble above Bats' head.

defending a stupid line with a stupid line isn't that solid an idea :p

I liked both lines, actually. I'm ok tiny bits of weird humour creeping into something so otherwise self-serious.
