I would be okay in saying it was a passable movie.

Also was there any specific reason Bruce was crippled in the beginning? Been a while since I saw TDK. Or was that shown in the whole visit to the hospital with the doctor scene?

The end of TDK where he tackles Dent off the roof.

Also seriously, did this bother no-one else?

That point is doubly stupid because it misses the quote and also misses the point.

He said, "It could be anyone." What that means is that the person under the mask could be anyone and isn't as important as the symbol of Batman which is a throughline of the entire damn trilogy.

Gordon wanted to know who's under the mask and Batman responded, "It's not important" to paraphrase.

Basically, Batman does what he can on a large scale to act as a symbol so that people do what they can on a smaller scale within their means. The line is a way to restate the recurring theme of the series.

wow, I thought I had this movie all figured out, and how it would be on my list of favorite movies made....sooo disapointed....

It's wierd, i like the movie but probably my biggest disapointment of all time. This summer really sucked for movies in general, thank god Avengers was the saving grace.

Wait. WUT.
people actually liked avengers more!?

Because he fell and Dent broke his fall...

This movie really needed 2 parts to be properly fleshed out.

As it's shown, it saccades from one point to another so quickly that your brain has difficulty processing what's going on.

The main points you get, but there are all these elements that are seemingly like plot holes - the movie woven like a dream, disparate flashing sequences that tie together on some higher level, while nonetheless feeling hazy in its details.

Not a bad movie as a whole... but like Bane's and The Batman's voices - sounds cool, but difficult to understand. But you understand the gist of it on the basis of everything else going on, even if you can't understand the specific words.

Tookay, I didn't catch your thoughts on Catwoman/Hathaway. What did you think?

I thought Hathaway did a good job with what she had (especially her opening scenes at the manor and bar), but the character was surprisingly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Selina could have been excised from the movie and, with a little shifting here and there, the outcome would have remained the same.

But, then again, she was a little more unique than JGL and Cotillard, whose characters seemed to be largely redundant (Gordon 2.0, Bane 2.0/Ra's 3.0).

They were all going to die shortly anyways from the bomb.

Ok but the set up gives them horrible odds and yet suddenly its a fist fight. A huge amount of them would have been shot dead before making it close enough to engage in hand to hand combat.

The end of TDK where he tackles Dent off the roof.
Yeah, I'm not really buying that, though. Batman fell from a greater height when he jumped out of his penthouse to save Rachel. He was perfectly fine from that.

It was cool to have a broken down Bruce, but it does seem forced. I feel like Batman had to have been through more between the events of TDK and TDKR, but according to the movie, he was MIA the whole time... Weird.

I think that's maybe because Catwoman was a just above average cat burglar with a bad history. Maybe you were hoping there was a supernatural element to her character like in Returns?

Even though it was ridiculous looking back... The whole nine lives deal was explored well in Returns.

I just think she was an incredibly boring character that got in the way of the Bane/Batman showdown. No one wanted to see Catwoman. I felt like Two Face served a big purpose in The Dark Knight, but Catwoman in this film was superfluous.

I'm also having difficulty considering this to be a Batman film. It felt like he was barely on the screen. This movie was like some sort of moody existential crisis that Bruce Wayne found himself in the middle of.

There is a reason for that. Batman activated his glider from his cape to lessen the impact.

When he fell with Dent... It was the full impact.

Dent broke his neck and Batman fucked up his leg.

As I child I used to do wheelies and jump ramps on my bicycle. I flew over the handle bars about a dozen times and never got injured.

One day, while litterally sitting still on my bike I slipped and broke my hand. Shit happens, injuries aren't always caused by the most dangerous thing you've ever done. Again I think this is a case of people trying to needless poke holes.

How would you have dealt with Bane at the end?

I knew that there would be a "no Batman" stretch around the middle where he was imprisoned, but I was shocked by how little his presence was felt elsewhere in the film.

15 pages since I fell asleep?! Fuck my life, and half of them are Empire staff criticising the fact Selina wasn't seen as a child trying to fuck a cat or something

Is this explained somehow in the last few minutes of TDK or is this just speculation? Again, long time since I watched TDK but pretty sure the ending sequence was him running away from cops with dogs.

I also find it extremely odd that the movie would go out of the way to mention his lack of whatever in his knees.

How would you have dealt with Bane at the end?

Without Catwoman?

If the story was kept largely as it is, I probably would have had Bane writhing on the ground and Talia performing a mercy kill on him. But I'd have to think about that more. I'm not really satisfied with any hypothetical I can come up with right now.

That said, I felt that Catwoman blowing him away wasn't much better.

I don't really have any super thought out analysis of this movie, but it just felt both rushed and way too long at the same time.

For the first half I didn't really know why anybody was doing anything which kinda sucked the tension out of everything that happened. It makes it all painfully obvious eventually, but while Bane took over the stock exchange and the big chase afterwards I just didn't really care about what was happening, and it went on for so long!

I also felt like, for a Batman movie, there sure wasn't a lot of Batman/Bruce Wayne in it. It felt like more attention was paid to all the other characters. "Hot-shot" cop-boy, Catwoman, random love interest (WITH A TWIST!), Gordon, Alferd, older annoying cop, etc.

I think I liked it overall and it definitely had some incredibly engaging scenes, but at the moment I think I liked the first to a lot more.

Watch him when he's running away at the end of TDK, he's limping pretty badly while running, that coupled with the amount of wear and tear his body has taken over the years.

Batman could barely walk and he just hopped on the Batpod at the end of TDK.

WB needs to go in a completely fresh direction now. Trying to mimic the Nolan movies without Nolan will only result in epic failure. Go in the opposite direction. Let's go more fantastical, more visual, more lively.

Let's go Schumacher.

Honestly, a live action TAS (in tone and episodic feel rather than nicking scripts word for word) would run great with me. Have someone a little older as Bruce - Jon Hamm would legitimately be a good choice. Have Clayface like Sandman in SM3, swooping around and fucking things up. Have Ra's in his big collared green cape. Have Killer Croc fucking around in the sewers.

Give them fuckloads of money like Boardwalk style to make it.

BAM. He even uses an anecdote too. Talks about being the Batman could be as simple as and adult giving a child a coat. Or something to that effect.

Catwoman blasting him away with the Batcycle was the only option? I was hoping Bruce would come back and outsmart him instead of actually winning a fist fight, however temporarily.
No. I was just asking as we agree on Catwoman being superfluous.
I would have omitted Catwoman entirely and the Bane/Batman showdown would have been longer and more epic. Catwoman sure as hell would not have been the one to kill him. I thought that was a total cop out.
Absolutely. I still thought he was alive. It ruined Bane's illusion to some degree. It goes from this intense fight to Catwoman making a gun joke as she uses the scenario as a symbolic litter-box.

Villain timeline in Dark Knight Rises:

[Bane]-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------[TWIST! Real villain revealed, Bane dies in 2 sec]--[Main villain dies]

Absolutely loved the movie. Came in with high expectations but not to the SUPER HYPE levels that so many people had. Probably why I enjoyed it so much.

Loved how they wrapped up Ra's story, that was quite amazing I think. The fight scene where Bane brutally demolishes Bats was very well done. I was like "come the fuck on Bats! I know you're supposed to lose this fight but fuck....i want you to win!" lol

That scene at city hall with the police vs inmates with Bane/Batman taking part. Reminded me of Troy when Hector and "Achilles" were working their way towards each other.

Didn't the doctor say that the mask Bane wears had some kind of anesthetic that is constantly "fed" to him and that's why he doesn't feel pain? Hence why when Bats went ape shit on his mask, things started to fall apart.

Fear of Death being THE utmost motivator..never thought of that way.

IMO, best movie of the trilogy. The way it tied up things from the past movies was very very well done.

I'll have to find my Bluray and check it out tomorrow. Actually might watch the whole movie to remember how good TKD was.

As far as the next Batman movie, if DC truly wants to work up to a Justice League movie like Marvel did with Avengers they need a reboot. Blake wouldn't work at all. If they do reboot, maybe go the more obsessive-compulsive, untrusting Batman angle.

I would love to know what he thought the whole Harvey Dent shit was about.

"Derr, Bruce thinks Harvey Dent could be Batman! The dudes not even rich!"

I agree, except for the slight retcon Batman does at the beginning of TDK.

'What makes gives you the right? What's the difference between you and us?'
'I'M NOT WEARING HOCKEY PANTSSSSH'

If you ain't got the real deal billionaire-dollar R&D dept + years of ninja training, you can go and get fucked! That's what TDK tells you.

Gonna jump in and agree that Bane's death by Catwoman was not earned in the slightest. Not sure how I would have done it but a surprise cannon blast from Catwoman would not have been it.

This sounds... terrible. Even if you are being slightly facetious.

It was sort of a Han-shoots-Vader's-TIE-and-bails-out-Luke-in-the-Death-Star-trench moment... but doesn't quite pull it off.

The entire buildup to the first Bane-Bats fight was spectacular. When that gate slammed down and Batman asked Catwoman if she knew what she'd done-goosebumps, man.

And then Bane just giving Batman the business for five minutes. Can't beat that.

I think the difference there is that they are literally trying to BE Batman rather than acting within their capabilities. Like they can act like Batman but they don't have the tech to back it up.

Try to stop a robbery in progress or help that old lady cross the street or whatever by all means but that doesn't mean you can be badass like Batman just because you throw together a costume.

Speaking of throughlines in the series though...I loved Cillian Murphy in this! :)

that's not Nolan's Batman?

Considering he trusted Catwoman in the third act when she fucked him over every single time he met her previously, Talia with a device that he knew was dangerous in the wrong hands for no reason and Blake with the legacy of the cowl after only having met him briefly twice, no, it's not.

I don't know if the buildup was good, considering how they waltz in there in literally a minute (I know it was a trap), but the fight itself was well-done. Didn't think Nolan had that in him.

The reboot should not be an origin story. We don't need that again. Start it off in a new universe (I'm hoping for something more fantastic, but still gritty like the tone of Batman TAS or the Arkham games) where Batman is already established and Gotham already has its fair share of super villains.

Looking at an animated film like the Under the Redhood is good. Joker, Ras Al Ghul, Batman, and Robin are already established, but the lesser known things (like there being multiple Robin's) is explained to the audience so they don't get too lost.

Either that or just go for Batman Beyond.
