Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

"Grinds" are in every game that has unlockable talents/skills/items. It just depends how fun they make them.

I love that I can roam around and not feel like I "have" to do something.

People are also making wild claims of no grinds though when there is. Also most have only played a small portion of the game and have no experienced the game at the higher levels. Lot of MMO's give you a different impression the further you get into it, and no one knows how well things will scale later down the line.

The only major difference with this game is that they took out the linear progression, they give you freedom which is refreshing, but alot of the trappings of the MMO genre are still here and strong

Alright, was up until 3am, got 6 hours of sleep and a shower.

Who needs invites?

I'd like to play a tournament with you guys. It's practically impossible to get into WvWvW, so I've been doing some PvE (level 10 now) in the Norn starting zone. Everything that's been said about it is true, that area is much more fun than the human starting zone (well, at least the boring farmlands).

(I really need to change the graphic settings for nicer screenshots)

also, playing PvE has made me appreciate the Thief shortbow

I played the shit out of this game yesterday and I'm having a good time learning the systems as I go. Any performance tips? I'm getting acceptable performance, 45-60 fps with everything maxed except to shadows, which I have set to low, but on my machine I would have expected better. In my testing, the shadow quality setting is the only one that affects my performance significantly and medium, high and ultra shadows all effect the framerate pretty much identically (35 - 60 fps, usually in the 45 fps range). The only way to get a boost, in my experience, is to set shadows to low or none.

My specs:

i7 930 @3.9 Ghz
HD 7970 @ 1125MHz/1575Mhz
8 GB DDR 3 Ram

So I just decided to try out Hawkian's xpadder controls and everything works great except for when I attempt to rotate the camera. The right stick moves the mouse around the screen but the camera does not move at all. Has anyone else encountered this problem with their gamepad and fixed it?

Basically do I need to make it so that right click is always being held down? I'm guessing that's it but how would I do this?

So I can't click to move where i want to go? I'm seriously having a hard time just playing this game. WASD for movement, okay. Right click mouse for rotation...okay...1123456789 for skills?! how in the world am I supposed to run up to a mob, attack, dodge, heal, attack, all while still focusing on the enemy?

Sometimes I'll just be standing there, not casting anything and fighting with the camera/movement only to die a few moments later. Maybe it's because I haven't played PC games in ages, but I played a ton of MMO's in the past and never had this problem.

Logitech G13. I don't underatand how people still play games with a "standard" keyboard in this day and age. Tying up 3 fingers for movement that you have to use for other actions is just silly. Then your thumb just for "space"? So 80s.

G13 - thumb controls all movement with an analog stick and your 4 fingers rest across 22 macro-able keys. No more finger yoga. 2012 FTW.

quick question guys, is there a capital city or a communal area where everyone will gather and congregate when everything settles down?

like orgrimmar/stormwind in wow?

unfortunately i can't use a device like the G13. i actually play the game left handed (all games) and use ijkl instead of wasd. with that said, wasd, i would imagine, is more comfortable and feels more accurate than a joystick IMO. unless you give a G13 to everyone and have them try it and make them change their mind, why change what works?

I've dabbled a bit before but I'm still a MMO noob. Is it common to remap your command keys? The number keys outside of 1,2,3,4 aren't comfortable for me with WASD movement. I changed A and D to strafe (though I'm considering changing them back to rotate because I'm holding the right mouse button 90% of the time) and I changed 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 to Q,E,Z,X,C,R,1,2,3. Mouse thumb button for weapon swapping.

i noticed a glitch when i tried to remap my profession skills F keys. the game crashes every time i try. but i remap everything.

the controls are no different than WOW, so i feel its something to get use to or PLEASE remap your keys. make the game yours. if you want to assign all the keys DO IT. i spent 5 years playing wow remapping my keys when ever i felt uncomfortable or something didn't work.

I was planning on getting the Razer Naga, but I've never personally used a mouse with that many buttons or a gaming keypad, so I really have no idea how I will adjust to each device. I know logitech just came out with their gaming mouse, but I really have no idea what to go for..

first time playing engineer. Quite like it so far. From what ive heard, the first two attacks on the flamethrower were rather useless. Now, the first attack on the flame thrower is pretty damaging for me. Dont know if they changed that or not, but its pretty damn effective. the 5th ability is a blind now as well. I think that is new also, but not sure

Maybe you're younger but using a keyboard since the 80s also means that some of us are pretty used to it. So re-learning a new control device for no real gain is not necessarily something to put money and effort into.

Hopping on for another pathetically small chunk of free time now...

DAMN YOU RESPONSIBILITIES

also wait we changed servers?

I doubt it since this game actually gives you reason to go out into the world. Each race has a capitol city though and there is Lion's Arch...which is a big city that all the races share. I am guessing if it does happen it will be there.

There are no tournaments right now, unfortunately. It's a bummer. Really hard to play PvP with friends the way it's set up right now.

Analog stick can be used as a static WASD movement. Also there's the Nostromo for those looking for a D-Pad. With the G13 - you have the option (in some games) to use the analog as an analog or WASD. Left/right/up/down is left/right/up/down whether it's analog, d-pad or WASD - the style of input does not change the output.

Also - watering your grass by filling up a cup of water and sprinkling it over your grass "works" but it's far more efficient to use a sprinkler. The person I quoted asked how is he supposed to perform actions when the finger in question is being used for movement - ie - limiting his ability to perform said action and desired movement direction at the same time.

Finger yoga.

Maybe you're younger but using a keyboard since the 80s also means that some of us are pretty used to it. So re-learning a new control device for no real gain is not necessarily something to put money and effort into.

34, thanks.

I'm a self-taught pianist since the age of around 6. Using my fingers isn't an issue when playing the keys, however, like the person I quoted originally - you just simply cannot perform every action as you'd like without some finger yoga.

Example - It's odd for me to press W at the same time while trying to activate 2-3 since 2-3 sit directly above W. If my middle finger is resting on W - trying to hit 2-3 with my ring or index finger - i must move those from strafing A-D - which means I cannot successfully move using AW or WD and activate 2-3 at the same time.

Using a G13 or Nostromo - my thumb moves in my desired direction while I have 4 fingers ready to hit any button I need. That IS a gain. The ability to perform actions you otherwise couldn't on a standard keyboard is a boon.

It's also not so much about relearning anything - you already know how to hit buttons - the difference is that your ring, middle and index fingers are no longer tied - they are free to hit what they want when they want. Is learning something new so bad?

Money for these devices is an issue, I will say. Highly overpriced - but my original Nostromo lasted me until Win7 when support was dropped. Each to their own but I wouldn't be so quick to discount the extreme advantages of a keypad DESIGNED for games vs a keyboard designed for typing.

Progression is good.

That being said - each to their own - I was merely trying to suggest that user try a gaming keypad instead of a typing keyboard. They aren't for everyone, I know, but they are vastly superior to a standard QWERTY. I can't play any game without it (save for your more controller-oriented games, thus my 360 controller).

so any other EU players that joined the US server?

I found it great that I've had no lag at all so far, considering I used to have lag while playing on the US servers of SW:TOR, so I kinda expecing lag here as well.

34, thanks.
Eh, my statement was purely inquisitive. No need to jump.

I'm not self-taught but also am a classical pianist (out of practice though). It carries over. I can objectively see the benefits of such a device. But using your mention it would be like playing a "new age" type of piano over the norm. I don't have large hands, which is like the height in the NBA version for pianist, so why not use a custom one with macros and tighter inputs? I'm not being a traditionalist but you can't fight against imprinted muscle memory. I put thousands of hours into GW1 which maintains a similar feel. So the deficiencies in adapting to a new device likely outweigh monetary gains from re-training. And there is re-training no matter how adaptable you label the device.

I'm a precision whore when it comes to controls. Being a DMC vet does that. But I'd have to spend a lot of time trying to see if there really is a speed or input advantage with such a device. I don't have trouble with your example because I've already trained my fingers to work around that issue. I usually two button mouse move or shift my fingers. There will be times where I monetarily break the movement inputs but we are talking about a few frames of animation. I don't even think the movement animation stops before I'm back to maintaining. And my directional movement is so wired in that moving to an analog would be like playing with a flight stick to me. This is like thousands of hours of embedded shit. ;)

I get what you are saying. And there are objective gains from a device. If I was new to the control scheme, I would likely try it. Same with a mouse with more buttons (less likely though, I hate those million button mice). I was just offering the point of view of an old hat and why it likely would be worse than better.

recton:
I can't imagine it is "vastly superior" though. I'd take a bet against my KB inputs vs. most people with that device.

Does anyone else feel that Guardian is really damn squishy? All my jobs are still lowbies since i am just trying out all the classes, but man, my guardian sure gets chunks of health taken out of her quite quickly

So the biggest problem I'm having right now is just flat running out of exp generators. I'm level 8 and all I have are level 9 and 10 renown hearts on the map, my story quest is 10. It wouldn't be so bad if "level 9" stuff didn't throw in level 11 stuff (on the assumption that you're 9) that kicks my ass.

I end up having to wander around looking for events to get EXP boosts. But this is worse than grinding. Much, much worse. I feel like I'm wandering around aimlessly trying to trip over EXP. At least grinding there's light at the end of the tunnel even if it's a bloody long tunnel.

I've been playing every class until at least level 5 to try them out.

Normally I hate rogue classes in MMO's but the thief is starting to edge out engineer as my main..they are awesome in this game

They are tied for lowest base health in the game. This is countered by their regeneration and aegis, increasing their effective health over time.
