Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Huh, just noticed something that others might have not for heart quests. There is a little number next to the heart quests on the map that tells you how many events tied to that heart you have left. If it is red, you still ahve more to do. if its white, its complete.

ive run the norn starter a few times and this is the first time ive run across Pup's illness event. Kinda made me look closer at the heart quests since I dindt expect it. So if you ahve trouble leveling make sure you have actually completed everything involving that heart, and not just the first quest

I thought that number showed what level the heart events are aimed at? When I was level 4 some of the events were a red 5, 6, etc. Then when I reached that level the number was white.

I finally found the norn weapon mechant, lol. The guy is in the center square right between all of the animal spirit lodgings for those who were looking as well. Itll be nice actually trying out all the weapons now

Hmm, that would make sense. I guess people will just have to start talking to the npcs near the heart quest area since I started a pretty awesome quest chain that got me a crazy amount of exp from just talking to all of the people

Hmm, I guess upon further reflection I was just doing my personal story, lol. I honestly didnt expect it to change THAT much when choosing different options in the beginning. Its completely different

Thief is so useless in sPvP

Guardians, Necros, Warriors, Dagger Eles, Greatsword Ranger will beat you in a straight 1v1 fight every single time

we don't deal enough spike damage, go down fast, can't properly heal ourselves up. Running away and chasing is all the Thief is really good for (and Daggerstorm. Daggerstorm is great)

I think you are doing it wrong....:lol

All kidding aside, I had tons of fun with Thief in spvp last bwe. Unless they changed some stuff. Duel daggers was powerful. I always had trouble with Mesmers and that was about it.

Now that our previous BWE characters have been wiped I can't bring myself to play just WvW. Going to wait till launch now and then enjoy the game at leisurely pace.

nah, I've been playing Thief since last BWE. I haven't really noticed many changes to our class, and certainly no buffs

I use dual daggers myself, but I just can't seem to make it work. I've seen semi-successful Thieves that abuse Quickness + Pistol Whip spam, and dual pistol Unload spammer, but that's about it.

Weren't Thiefs the profession that stacked something like crit+poison and one shotted people or i am remembering wrong ?_?

Info about Character names:

Q:
While most everyone understands the name reservation policy for new characters, I would like to ask about ‘after’ we create them. Once the game goes live, and we name our characters, will we be able to delete them, and have a set time frame to reuse the name?
For example: Charr Ranger – Bob From Accounting
Say I delete Charr Ranger – Bob From Accounting, so I can make a Human Warrior of the same name. Will I have time to remake a new character using that same name? Or will it be a game wide free-for-all to take that name once I hit the “delete” button? I would hope that we can still reuse that name, without racing through the character creation process to reclaim it. I know GW1 had this option, but being it a brand new game, I want to be absolutely sure.

UPDATE: Confirmed with our Excellent Server Team Leader: We will have the same system in Guild Wars 2. There is a 24-hour “cool down” period before a deleted character’s name is generally available. This gives you time to build a new character and still use the same name.

I disagree, Thief can pretty much take down anyone 1v1 besides Necro. Guardian is possible but definitely tough. If your having trouble just focus on weak targets, your job is to take down targets that are vulnerable, get in get out as quick as you can (seeing as how that's what the Thief skills are good at) if your able to sneak up on him without being noticed, even better. Take control of points when you think you can. Try not to engage multiple targets due to the Thief's lower armour. Collapse on foes and provide support where you see fit.

Also, I highly recommend skills that focus around control of movement. Scorpion Wire (I think?) is extremely good. Take a shadow step and perhaps a skill that allows stealth and you should be good :).

The problem with events is and always will be the same; them being non-dependable (as in, individual events will not always be there for you), non-guided content, different people with different play styles and conceptions/wants/needs from an MMO will have extremely different experiences. Basically the thing is that for some people, an MMO is a game, while for others it's an experience.

For those that feel like it's a game, not having definite, reliable goals will frustrate them. They will gravitate to the one pieces of content that are there in the map, Hearts, and will measure their progress against them. If they're lucky, they'll stumble into enough events on the way to boost their levels to get by. If they don't, they'll be forced to play the events they do know, over and over. Needless to say, their experience with the game will not be a very positive one, and they'll prefer any traditional MMO to this.

For those that think an MMO is an experience, this game is, however, perfect. They will mostly ignore Renown Hearts, and instead explore every nook and cranny of the world. This will take a lot longer but will inevitably make them stumble upon dozens upon dozens of events, particularly those that are not close to any Heart (which are usually the most rewarding ones, since they feel like discovering a secret). They'll also get gathering experience, plus experience from exploring, vistas, points of interest and waypoints; the offbeat, relaxed stuff. Since they'll, and this is the crucial difference, be already be enjoying themselves at this point, most often they won't even look at their level. Leveling for them will come unexpectedly and effortlessly, as a side effect of playing and enjoying the game. They'll typically be a couple of levels or more above any content they do.

The key point is that these groups will hardly be able to understand each other, and any discussion between them will be difficult, if not outright impossible; they might as well be playing different games, indeed. Worse, each experience is a slippery slope in an opposite direction, leading to further polarization. The first group will enjoy the game less and less as they grow more starved for levels. The second group will not even notice the existence of levels, adding to their immersion and enjoyment.

This is what I've noticed from others' recollections and experiences. If anyone from each camp wants to add anything, feel free, but at this point I think further discussion on the matter will be as fruitless as it has been for the past few weeks.

You are TOO REASONABLE FOR THE INTERNET Weltall.

Thanks! Yeah, I get that sometimes. :D

By the way, and completely unrelated, but under no circumstance let the beta go by before playing a round or two of Keg Brawl. It is way more fun that it has any right to be.

Also I was trying to save the Asura for retail, but I couldn't hold myself (and my GF wanted to make one too). Their starting zone has some of the best Hearts in the game. I've seen just a little of it, but, I mean, actual board games? As one of the FIVE tasks in ONE of the Hearts? Are you insane, ArenaNet!? I feel the Asura got a ridiculously huge amount of love from the devs, frankly.

The only thing is that it makes the Charr starting zone seem even more neglected, to me at least. Anyone else feel it is the least engaging one? It has a couple of nice events, but the hearts seem so... by the numbers.

In BWE1 I wrecked as a bleed+poison dual dagger thief. Though they redid traits since then so not sure how well it'd hold up.

The asura and sylvari hearts and PS are leagues better than the other 3 races.

It makes sense since they worked on them late in the development, and probably learned a few things from Human, Charr and Norn zones.

To be fair, the human starting area may still be my favorite. There's lots there that I loved, from the simple farm tasks, to plugging holes in the dam (I liked the squirts for some reason), to the amazing water visual and audio effects of the sprinklers, to how insanely beautiful everything looked. In fact I'd say that the human area is probably the most beautiful in the game; I was expecting the Sylvari to perhaps top it, but, while really beautiful in itself (and in a completely different style), I still think Queensdale and Divinity's Reach are the best the game has to offer visually.

Also, I've spent a while fishing for the post that told me to exchange the D-Pad and RB+D-Pad bindings on my configuration, but I can't find it. Turns out he was totally right; I did just that a few minutes into BWE3 and it does work much better. So, if you read this, thanks a lot! :)

Of course, thanks also go to Hawkian, whose original configuration I ended up virtually copying to the letter. The bit about having 1-3 on X, Y and B, while 4 and 5 are LB and LT, meaning that you hit your right hand weapon skill button with your right hand, and your left hand skill buttons with your right? OK, I give up, I have no words to describe how genius that is. :)

Do you need something like Xpadder for 360 controller support or is it plug and play? I'm really not a fan of A and D being camera rather than strafe but can't figure out where I'd put camera otherwise (aside from mouse which I don't think is possible).

Yup, you need xpadder and autohotkey

all relevant posts. 1st one tells you how to deal with hotkey. 3rd one has a saved game profile. all of them have different controller configs

Oh, and for people who were wondering, I do definitely like Dodge mapped to the two trigger buttons. Cant say that there is a delay at all and makes the other buttons a lot easier to press.

Well, there is a delay, but that is mostly just the lag or my brain transmitting the visual/audio queues to my brain being somewhat slow at the moment (not used to it)

Cooking is really fun and I've actually had a lot of success with the discovery tool. My concern is that the buff from food are very weak since they don't scale. Plus, it seems like to can only have one nourishment buff at a time. So how much demand will there be for items that give you very small stat boosts?

"'ve ditched Mesmer for Engineer. I am not sure if that means they have improved Engineer or if I just got tired of Mesmer being less than what it should be. I feel the Engineer can be quite fun, but it relies on getting those utility weapons. Once you get access to those, the class really opens up. It is unfortunate that the 4th shield skill is broken because I really loved using that last BWE. I do enjoy rifle and its shotgun feel. "

ArenaNet clearly has no idea what Mesmer is supposed to be in this game. To be honest, Paragon would've played better in GW2's combat system without sacrificing the feel/flavor of the class from GW1. And no, Guardian isn't a fucking paragon.

The damning thing is that Mesmers have gotten progressively worse with each BWE. It really is a case of shoving a triangle into a square hole.

What they ended up with is a minion bomber class. It feels a little dishonest for ANet to call it a Mesmer.

BTW, if they add spears to Warriors in an expansion, they could possibly pull off a Paragon playstyle.

Good news everyone!
We’ve found and fixed at least one of the major causes of our excessive CPU usage. An unfortunate side effect of the change is that the NPC mercenaries that come from befriending a camp can not attack gates anymore, but we will be able to increase the population caps again.

A second fix we found involves our team population caps in WvW. Short story is that they were broken and made it so that even fewer people than we intended could enter the map.
So not only did we have to cut the population cap to save on CPU power, another separate bug was making that cap even smaller.

But now the build that fixes it just hit the live servers. Hopefully things should start to run much smoother for the rest of the weekend and we can start raising the population caps and cutting back on the excessively long queue times.

Thanks for your patience everyone, patch up your clients and let us know how these fixes affect your wvw experience!

PS: Yes, you should be saying the first line just like Prof. Farnsworth.

Seems like population caps in WvW were bugged a bit.

I'm not really sure I like the game. I'll need to play it more, but it feels like every auto-target, auto-attack MMO ever. Super disappointing after playing TERA. The only difference I'm seeing right now is that you don't actually have to do anything to get quests done? That's cool I guess. Spell animations are neat looking, but I don't feel like I'm ever contributing anything or progressing. Doesn't help that it seems some quests are bugged and won't complete/progress no matter what you do (the bull one in particular). Are you supposed to do every heart quest? I did one of them twice and now I'm way over-leveled for all the rest. There's no sense of direction or anything. I don't really like it at all. :|

I think the combat is really good. It's not accurate to say it's like every auto-attack MMO ever. You don't even need to target, though you can and it can be helpful. When I'm going HAM with the flamethrower on my Engineer, I don't target. I just spread out the cone of flames back and forth over groups of enemies. It plays close to a TF2 Pyro, which is something you wouldn't be able to do in your typical atuo-attack/auto-target MMO. Same thing with my Mesmer and his sword attack, I don't always target when fighting groups. It has a sweeping animation to it and thus a sweeping strike, so I just sweep through groups of enemies.

The game does asks more autonomy of the player. I know quest design has become an art of gently guiding a player from quest to quest, and quest hub to quest hub, but the PVE design is so changed in GW2 that such a game structure doesn't work as well. Plus, I wouldn't find it as fun if they stuffed it in.

1) Yes except for venturing to other starting areas
2) Yes. I'm getting level 10 and 11 hearts dropped on my map. Absolutely brilliant!
3) No
4) No

I'm not sure why I should be venturing over the world to grind renown hearts. If they want to advertise no grind then go no grind. I don't mind grinding. I've done nine level 85s in WoW already. My biggest problem is that I can't traditionally grind and because the game's XP progression is messed up I can't progress without some form of it. XP from monsters is next to nothing. I can only go walking, walking, walking oooh there's an event! A few hundred XP yay! Walking, walking, walking, walking.

Even when I do go outside the bounds of where my level indicates where I should be I feel like I'm slipping further and further behind. Which makes me walk around more "grinding" dynamic events. Which makes them feel stale incredibly quickly.

At the moment I feel like they're selling me the same old shit sandwich and trying to tell me I've got it wrong and that it's actually a smore. Which is a shame because I loved GW1 and there's a lot about this game that's incredibly cool.

Gethering, crafting, etc are huge parts of the XP boost. I know several friends who out-leveled a zone before they finished hearts, exploration, etc. There's a good YouTube vid showing all the non-grindy stuff you can do to level. As someone who has 5 85s in WoW, it was jarring my first BWE - now that I'm playing this game differently this BWE it feels like leveling is on cruise control. I'd look up that video but I'm on mobile right now - but I do know its in this thread. Trust me when I say the levels start rolling in when you stop thinking like every other MMO wants you to think. That was my downfall with my first BWE - as stated - now I feel like the levels come fast as heck.

You just miss your lolis.

If you're running around and gathering, crafting, DE'ing, doing renown hearts, grabbing vistas, and exploring each map fully... there is no way you will ever be behind on levels. The only time I have ever been behind is when I went to the next tier map before hitting its lowest level. Otherwise, I am constantly down-leveled.

Mind you, this is without me having even touched my personal story.

EDIT: That said, it'd be even easier if I could get into WvW.

Still no /dance?

:(

Is there a way to find out what your framerate is without running fraps? I haven't noticed any slowdown on my system, but I'd like to test it without just going on "well it feels smooth".

Did the Asura jumping puzzle. Took about an hour, was frustrating at times, mainly cause i'm under leveled for the place (lvl 9, there's mobs that are lvl 13). At the end was a chest which I got to.. but also a lvl 13 elite that kicked my butt.

Whenever I make a new character I spend like 90 minutes doing nothing but grinding weapons on low level mobs to earn every skill. Elementalists are a nightmare.

Yea, shatter still sucks and confusion sucks as well. What the hell else is there for that class? phantasms? Those are boring as hell

they need to make shatters and conditions a lot more viable and ditch whatever else they are trying to do

Recap of my experience:

Trying out warrior. Double axe is a load of fun. Tried out ele and I didnt like it at all. A straight up caster just isnt my thing apparently.

Im going to give the necro some more playtime with his other weapons eventually and see how those are, but I quite liked the class. Engineer, Ranger, Warrior, Necro, and THF were pretty damn fun. Guardian, eh. Ele and Mesmer, BOO!

I'm not sold on the combat, which just feels so weak and slow. Don't like the general way things control either, from running to jumping - it just feels like a clunky third person shooter. Meanwhile I haven't seen anything to suggest PvE, my main interest, is particularly great. I've lost interest in WoW but it's PvE/raiding is still the best in the genre.

bleh. I'll be buying the game, but I'm not nearly as hyped as I was pre-beta

The combat could use a little more impact, I guess, but I feel it's plenty fast. When the zerg descends on one poor guy it's horrible, yeah, but when I'm just exploring the world stumbling on random enemies I feel the combat really holds up. And I enjoy the game much, much more after I decided to turn off all of the things on the map, pick an interesting looking thing in the distance and trying to run to it. Highly recommend that you play it that way if you're interested in PvE.

Ya if you're looking forward to raid and such as your main entertainment then gw isn't the place.

This beta has got me very excited for the release.

Currently testing a Sylvari Ranger and enjoying the class for it´s simplicity and added pet system in pve.

I have a couple of questions tho, for those that are more informed about the game:

1. How does a longbow/shortbow ranger rank in pvp and pve? main role and function wise.

2. Are events in any way manageable to do solo? I´m worried that once the main push of players goes through a zone, that many of these events you trigger will have little to no players around (has happened a couple of times during this beta).

Well I've been in a few events solo so far and really they were not possible for me to do. The game is supposed to scale the events depending on how many players are in the area doing them, but by myself doing an event my level it seemed impossible. Makes me wonder if the game takes account people who are just nearby the event and not actually participating in it? Cause that might be causing it to scale differently? The scaling though I think still needs to be worked on as with lot of players many of the events are incredibly trivial.

Try a controller? I think it works fantastic. Cant imagine ever going back to KB/M

As for the overall game, I was a bit lukewarm at first, but as I lost that overwhelmed feeling, started figuring out what to do, the controls, my abilities, when to dodge, etc. It got a lot more fun. I am having a great time just wondering around the world looking for stuff to do. It beats the hell out of quest hubs and the rewards for simply exploring and posisbly finding something cool are great

Im liking the combat a lot better now as well. Best MMO combat Ive played (ive only played a bit of Tera - fetch quests put my off completely)

Last BWE I loved Engineer but I'm really loving the variety of the Warrior. How will I decide?!

Look the Heavy and Medium armor designs and choose which one you like the most :D!

Confusion is actually improved. I ran similar builds this BWE and last BWE based on Confusion and Glamours. The build is far more effective this BWE than last, though I am not sure it is Tournament viable.

To compare, my Confusions were hitting (when they actually hit), around 300, maybe 500 tops. The bottom range was 160. This BWE, 300 damage is the bottom level and 1000 is the highest I've seen, with lots of 600 and 800 confusion hits.

They added another way to add confusion to Glamours and it makes them put a decent stack on foes within their area. It also works in group combat with combo fields. An unload into the combo field can stack 11 Confusions pretty easily.

The problem is that it takes like 5 mandatory major traits, leaving little else for utility and survival. You are also stuck using scepter which is the weakest weapon for Mesmers by far. You also need at least 1k condition damage.

If they had the staff add confusion on top of everything else it did, BAM. Mesmer is awesome
