Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

so initiative ends up being a disadvantage that reduces combat flexibility for thieves compared to other professions? that seems horrible.

There's traits that give more initative in a lot of different ways... so they're not totally boned.. but ya they play a lot differently than any other class in that aspect.

That said, being able to use the same skill is very deadly. Leaping death blossom when you're specced in bleeds and poisons is lethal as hell when spammed.

I wouldn't say that. You have different skills that regain initiative.(usually each weapon has one or more with traits) You can also use harder hits multiple times in a short span where others can't. I wouldn't say it's a disadvantage, just a different play style.
a non-thief could hit, swap, and hit hard again too. even with ten initiative you're not doing more than two big things in a row (edit: or maybe you can?). it seems your attack rate is going to be very slow compared to someone with 10 different attacks on different cooldowns (with the ole' in-and-out combat style, perhaps this isn't that bad, but it seems... sub-optimal).

my hatred of cooldowns makes me want to like this class, but i do want something with a high skill ceiling and play subtleties...

Try passing off the ability to use heartseeker 3 times in a row as a disadvantage to anyone not playing a thief. :lol

I'm not saying it's a disadvantage. My original post talking about it just means thief is a lot more straight forward and maybe simpler to play. To get the most out of any other class you need to weapon swap constantly. As you said a thief can just jam the same skill 3 times.

You can have up to 15 initiative. So even the biggest stuff you could do 3 times, average stuff 5 times.

The only difference is Thief from my experience has more hard hitting skills where other professions are over all more situational. Sure you will have a couple that hit hard, but usually they aren't on the same caliber as the Thief's. I didn't play a Thief this BWE so my memory isn't as fresh with their skills, but as I recall from last BWE the traits help out a lot when it comes to initiative. There are traits for more starting initiative, traits that make more spells regain, or not cost initiative. Plus there is enough in-n-out skills to help you manouver around enough to regain enough to make it moot.

If that's what you are looking for I would stick with Thief. Just don't expect to pop in and kill them fast, unless they are weak or you are picking and choosing what battles to engage. But I would certainly not count initiative as a disadvantage. It's just a different playstyle. Just like Elementalist and Engineers not getting weapon swap. It just makes the thief unique.

I agree with you there are proabably a lot playing this way, but like I said above, unless they are picking and choosing their battles they will probably be dying a lot. There is a lot of awesome combos and tactics to use with a shortbow. The targeted shadow step and the knockback mixed with other shadow steps and stealths can make for crazy confusing fights. I would definitely not recommend just hitting the same attack multiple times unless someone is really weak.

3) Want to just switch offhand weapons with the swap button? Don't equip a main hand weapon in set two.

Hey, didn't know that. Neat!

Also, your Sylvari is just boss. I can picture him wandering the word with his katana as his only family.

I thought so, but they're not.

They're a more harder, but not too hard. We'll have to see come later levels.

Well, I spent the good part of half an hour trying my hand at the Sylvari with little success, also seeing dozens of people barely making it up the first 30%. It turns out that platform games are one of my favorite genres and I cut my teeth on Megaman and Mario Lost Levels... so "easy" may be relative. :)

My screenshots from this weekend. Mostly just locations and vistas, with some UI stuff I took for a friend.

Awesome, keep them coming! Perhaps the opening post should be updated with links to each gallery? To give people a sense of what the game really looks like.

What... so trasmutation and dyes are useless for pvp? If so, it really sucks... I hope they change it.

Dyes can be used no problem. I would go so far as to say they are a must to use ASAP because most of the starting PvP armors have HORRIBLE colors (probably to drive home the point that you're wearing a different set, the first time you step into the lobby).

It was bugged apparently. It's supposed to be a push back.

Yes, it was bugged; I absolutely loved it in BWE2 and past, but it did nothing now. See that bubble surrounding you? It would expand in a flash to several meters knocking every enemy around you away! It looked insanely awesome. You have no idea how i missed it this BWE. :(

OK, I think I'm reasonably current in my replying, so I'll start with my impressions now.

For starters, Keg Brawl is AMAZING. I spammed Guild Chat a bit trying to get people to try it, and they were consistently amazed as well. It is a freaking riot, especially with some friends. The kind of hilarious stuff that goes on there, while still being a surprisingly deep game (for a MMO minigame), is just crazy. Really, it was THE thing to try this BWE for me. It sounded quite dumb/cumbersome on paper but I was quite addicted to it in the end.

There are also a few pet projects I'd love to have time to make for the community, like:

1) A package of XPadder free version + Autohotkey (also free) + configuration files for both + Instructions + perhaps a .bat file to start both with one click, to allow people that want to to play with a joypad to get started with minimal hassle. I'd like to include a few configurations, like Hawkian's, Thanasis' and mine. If I could find no-install versions of both, that'd be great. Does anyone know if precompiled Autohotkey scripts (in .exe form) can run without installing AHK itself? I already installed it, so I can't try.
2) A Keg Brawl writeup / playing guide.
3) A Java or C++ program to allow for easy selection and organization of sound tracks for the game; i.e. list all tracks in a directory, set categories like "City" "Night" and such, then automatically generate the playlists.
4) Another one to generate class/race combinations; say, generate 5-8 characters covering all races and/or classes, perhaps using weights to make some combos, like Charr Engineer, more common.

I'm quite starved for free time though, so let's see if I get to do ANY of all that. :/ Number 1) seems like the most beneficial and the one that would take the least time, so that'd be my priority.

those graphics are downright awful. did you have low settings on?

Loved the new races but man I love my Norn too much. The Asura was my favorite over the Sylvari. The Sylvari voice just kind of bugged me.

Overall I just want this damn game out. I didn't play too much this beta weekend simply because I felt like I was wasting time. I'm ready for the real deal.

Really liked my Asura Thief (pistol/dagger). This little guy is going to be my main at launch. :)

i am patient... willing to kill. slowly...

(i'm making a thief straight-away in any case... initiative is too much of a good idea in theory to not try it.)

still think they should add hammer as a thief weapon:) (hey, he was raised in a tough neighbourood!)

On a technical level, the game is not that impressive, even on high it's full of bad textures and very flat surfaces/low poly elements. The game makes up for it with fantastic art direction. The scale and art design of stuff is top notch. The game also runs fairly well compared to other MMOs with large amounts of players in the same area. The scale of player battles and the performance beats out any other MMO out there.

I want staff. It would be nice to have some kind of defensive/support weapon for thief. Plus I think it would look bad ass. Have the staff skills be knockbacks and stuns or something.

yeah... based on my no-gameplay-experience opinion, you'd better not get hit on your thief since they're a) squishy, and b) not able to deal with getting status ailments in a reasonable way.

in a game with an active/actioney combat system like this, it seems a shame to not play a quick melee class somehow...

I vote that everyone in GAF play an Asura, so we can be a pint-sized army running around.

I thought I was going to like the sylvari, then I learned that they glow during the night and that just put them over the top.

Is it only the night? Someone said it was based off when you said your sylvari was born? Also.. I asked earlier not sure if I got a response.. but are there day/night cycles? Swore I never saw a place get dark.

Best sylvari name I saw this beta was a male named "Charles Barkley"

Yeah, I had trouble seeing things in some sylvari areas during the night cycle. Some of the places were really dark.

It doesn't get super dark but it does get darker and the moon/sun rotates through the sky. I only made night sylvari so I dunno if they glow at different times of the day.

There are, but night time is hardly night at all in places. It's especially hard to tell in the Sylvari area.

How "involved" is this MMO? Ive never played one before because they all seem so convoluted but I really want to try this from the videos and previews in this thread. Last online game i played was Diablo 3 if thats any indication of my level.

GW2 has a LOT of stuff to do in it, but the controls are relatively easy to pick up. But knowing how to use them takes practice and some rough patches. In one way, you might have some advantages over MMO players in that you don't have another game's systems confusing you.

This was my first BWE that I participated in and I had a blast playing as a Guardian. Will there be more BWE in the upcoming weeks or was this the last one?

I played for a little while and did four classes for the intro portions of the game.

How do you level in PVE? I didn’t really want to do the “personal story” because it was too much walking around but I found that just doing the zone left me stuck at around level 5 or 6. The game didn’t communicate to me intuitively where I should go. Is this my fault for not doing the personal story?

But I can't wait that long ._.

*curls up into a ball on her bed and waits*

I've been waiting on this since 2007!!!!
I think I'm just going to give up playing other games until this releases because I know I will just sit there hating myself because it won't be Guild Wars 2 and therefore it will suck.

Nothing has been said on them releasing a Character creator before game launches which for me and most people here is August 25th?

I was unfortunately occupied for most of the weekend but i managed to get around 8 hours across the 3 days, a lot less then i had hoped. I still have no idea what class i want to main for launch. I tried Ele, Necro, Warrior and Mesmer in sPvP and had a blast with them all. However, i'm really interested in Engineer and wish i had tried it out.

Enjoying everyones screenshots and write ups too.

I absolutely disagree. I played Ranger this weekend, and I found both Longbow and Shortbow to be utterly unimpressive. Sword/Dagger just straight up outclassed them in every aspect except kiting, which is arguably safer, but much slower at taking out enemies. Greatsword was amazing as well, but I just couldn't get over the Sword/Dagger. I ended up using Axe/Axe or Axe/Torch as my secondary weapons, because it was necessary to have some kind of ranged weapon, and more importantly some decent AOE damage for dealing with large groups of enemies. But for 1 on 1 encounters Sword/Dagger dominated.

Sure, for WvW I would have switched out my Axe for a Longbow, because the longer range would make quite a difference in keep assault. And longer range does offer an advantage in dealing with boss creatures that can one shot you. But for 90% of the PVE content, I found that melee was just a better choice.

melee certainly does more damage than ranged attacks (and it should), but as you said, ranged gives you the advantage of kiting, which for me as a Thief was the key element for surviving fights with enemies 3 or 4 levels above my own and soloing skill challenges. I took part in a fight againt the boss mob of the Norn starting zone (which I believe is level 18 or 19) together with dozens of other players when I was still only level 11 (100% the zone at level 12 :P), and if it wasn't for my shortbow, he would have one-hitted me every single time. The melee fighters in our group died in droves. I did occasionally switch to dagger/dagger when it was safe to go toe on toe with normal mobs.

I don't even know which class to start with.....Necro sounds alittle like Elementalist? I want something other than warrior but is as powerful as a warrior and fun to play

both professions can cast AoE spells that do a lot of damage in group battles. The Necromancer is built around spamming conditions on enemies, life syphon spells and/or summoning expendable pets. The Necromancer also has roughly twice the base hitpoints of the Elementalist, and a special ability (Death Shroud) that makes you even more durable in a fight. Basically, you are a caster tank that slowly but steadily whittles down enemies with poison and bleeding conditions (well, the way I played him, anyway!).

The Elementalist on the other hand is an extremely versatile profession that can do a variety of things (aoe and single target nukes, conditions and healing, support, summon elementals, and best of all, elemental weapons) at the cost of being very squishy unless specifically spec'd for survivability.

I never took photos of Queensdale at night because it was not nearly as picturesque; needless to say, it happened to be night every time I wanted to show the zone to any of my friends. >_>
Really, I'm having trouble grasping how this could be missed. I guess the game is THAT absorbing. :D

Play what you want. Make of it what you want. There is no requirement to do anything really, I think the PVE would make anybody happy for $60 and then there is the PVP if that is your thing.

No sub means you don't have to 'feel' like you're getting your moneys worth.

BUT, the MMO genre might not be something you'll enjoy if you haven't played one before so it might not be the game that sucks if you don't enjoy it, but rather you don't prefer the way MMO's work.

Although this one is different than your standard WoW.

Mega Post incoming

So was all the Guild chatter on the Mumble server or was it disorganized due to the lack of being able to get into WvWvW?

Didn't have a mic ready this weekend so didn't join the Mumble server, but also didn't see a single thing said in the Guild chat tab all weekend. Also managed to only see one other Gaffer all weekend. I couldn't help but feel that something was broken and/or off.

You can jump into mumble and listen to the conversation, even if you don't want to talk or can't. We had quiet quite (though what an interesting slip) a few people doing just that.

Also, are you sure you were Representing the guild? I had a lot of people asking for invites because they didn't see guild chat, only to find out they were already in and just weren't representing.

Because Guild Chat was rather lively most of the weekend. It only died down after midnight (and that's when it's sexier to take it to Mumble anyways... rrrrrrawr)

DUDE!! So glad I went and checked those screenshots out. I had no idea half of that was even in the game. The orphanage, all the dragon statues, puppet show stands.....

So much love has been poured into this game.

Thanks for sharing the link to your pics Retro.

I tend to take pictures of little stuff that impresses me. We'll all see stuff like the Shadow Behemoth (who I took pictures of just to show my brothers), but how many people will notice the little scenes painted on the Orphanage?

I should have taken about a hundred more screenshots, especially of stuff like the hidden area in the Town of Nolan. I think I was just so caught up in the moment of showing it to everyone that I didn't think to snap a few photos of it.

Then again, like Rata Sum, there's something to be said for seeing things yourself, and that particular hidden area (and let's be honest, it is WELL hidden) is so charming and gorgeous that I don't think screenshots could do it justice.

When the game launches, I will personally take anyone who asks straight to it. It's a short jog outside the Black Citadel so anyone of any level can reach it. It's well worth seeing.

Alright, now that the BWEs are over it's time to pick a profession.

Yep. I've more or less got my 5 narrowed down;
  • Male Norn Warrior (Got used to their animations, yay!)
  • Female Human Guardian
  • Male Charr Engineer (I had so much fun with mine this weekend)
  • Asura Thief
  • Sylvari Elementalist

I may swap the Asura and Sylvari, or if Rangers seem much improved at launch (I am not a fan of pet management) I will consider one of those. I may also give Necro a shot.

Also, I hope the officers and guild leader of the guild can decide on the server situation sometime soon and don't let it linger for too long.

We'll get you the info as soon as we can. Obviously we need to know where large guild alliances or communities are going to take root so we can avoid them. I heard a few people suggest Sanctum of Rall for the positive connotation it's name has (read here)

Eventually one guy said, "I hope there's more to this than spamming my attacks." I messages him and suggested partying up, and he agreed. I ran to this place I knew damn well would give us a helluva fight and we went to it.

Within an hour, we had grown accustomed to one another's play style and were owning groups that were kicking our asses when we first arrived in the area. Even when mobs spawned right on top of us, we could pull it off. Added each other to our Contacts Lists.

THAT is the good stuff. Throw all that safe crap out the window.

Nicely done, much better than telling them to go back to WoW (which I saw soooo much of in Lion's Arch this weekend, that seemed to be the place to congregate and bitch). Convert them with kindness. That's the Mormon way!

Wait, you guys didn't know GAF Guild is also officially Mormon? Don't leave, I already ordered 200 pairs of sacred underwear!

My screenshots from this weekend. Mostly just locations and vistas, with some UI stuff I took for a friend.

God damn... these are so well composed it looks like National Geographic-esque stuff.

How'd you get your characters out of frame?

I see me!

I'll be semi-brutally honest here; in this thread, I've noticed your Raccon Mario-like avatar a few times and probably responded to your posts a couple of times but never really made a distinction that it's "you". It's nothing personal and it just comes with having an active thread where everyone kind of blurs into the general noise.

Not anymore. I now associate you with the exploring and jumping puzzles we did last night, your character Fiora, the voice on mumble, etc. I went to bed thinking I should have waited a few minutes longer for everyone else in Mumble to finish the puzzle so we could take a group screenshot. That, and not taking many screenshots in general, is the biggest disappointment of the Beta.

Seriously people, get on Mumble, make friends. It's there for that reason.

I agree, it was so much fun just exploring the world as a group, finding all of the areas hidden away off the beaten path, and seeing all of the ridiculous attention to detail. Plus, the jumping puzzles were much more fun in a group. Nothing better than chatting with guildies while trying to meticulously time jumps and avoid traps, only to see bodies raining from the sky above.

Doing things as a group also seemed to net us more influence, so having guild get-togethers where we run through Map Completions would be really cool (and imagine what people will think when they see a huge swarm of GAF tags zipping around town).

I don't think I understand the Engineer's 4 skill with a shield. It says something about being able to shove enemies back but I've never figured out how to do it.

You've gotta hit the same button again within the 3 second window to do it. It's hard to spot at first because you press the button and it immediately rolls over to the knockback. It's definitely there, you just have to pop it quick.

Think of it as two functions rolled into one button rather than something you tap-wait-tap again to use.

Oh look, there goes my next hour. Heck, I'm getting my GF to come see them as well. Impressions when I finish seeing them. Thanks a lot, man; you wouldn't believe how I love these gems sprinkled all over the game. :)

Most heard comment in my apartment this weekend: "Oh my god, come look at this!"

Which version is everyone getting? $59 or $79?

$150 version. Will probably post pictures of the unboxing, even though that's probably the nerdiest thing I think I've ever considered actually doing.

I want staff. It would be nice to have some kind of defensive/support weapon for thief. Plus I think it would look bad ass. Have the staff skills be knockbacks and stuns or something.

Holy shit ... That's actually quite a bad-ass idea. The idea of a Thief using a bo-staff fits really well (even if GW2 staves don't quite look the part) and could give them a sort of Monk-like vibe (especially if it gives them support).

This may need to go on the list of things for the Official Forums suggestion thread I am cooking up (assuming we can post on them).

Frankly ANET made the early game too easy. The things that made it 'hard' before for most people were the elements distinct to GW2 that people didn't understand and when the scaling was simply off. You didnt dodge, you died. And that's how it should be. Even fights early on should be, at least occasionally, trials. They shouldn't be given to you.

I noticed I was needing to dodge a lot less this time to survive. Previous BWEs, I was constantly dodging by level 5. This time, I didn't feel punished for forgetting my dodge button, though it was more like I needed it less.

I do kind of prefer the way it was before. Maybe they made the earlier levels easier because this was by far the most open beta they've had?

The Sylvari glow thing took me 2,5 BWE's to find out. It blew my mind when I finally understood, when clicking on that lightbulb button during character creation.

There's a representation step???? I thought I would just hit "accept" on the invite and that was it. Whenever I hit the Guild pane I would see the roster, etc. That would explain it!

What exactly is world vs world? Is it like asuras vs humans? Is it like the normal game except you can attack other players? Is there even something like this in the game?

Alright, I don't know that much about specifics for GW2, so I'm hoping people who did beta weekends can help me out.

I'm looking to do a lot of AoE stuff, both at range and in melee. Right now I'm torn between Thief (I hear the shortbow has great AoE), Warrior (greatsword is supposed to be awesome, longbow not so much) and Elementalist (I don't know much about them and they're kinda my last choice).

Which would be best?

OK, I lied, I did take some Queensdale night pics, just hadn't uploaded them yet. Feast your eyes on this:

Ultra-high HD version here.

Retro, I finished seeing your pics, awesome stuff. I have a couple of questions:

1) The orphanage is in your personal instance? I haven't come across it, I think. Will have to look for it on retail.
2) I had already read your pic/comment about Yogi. :) I wish I found it, where in Queensdale is it approximately?
3) The windmill room seriously rocks, another thing I have to search for. Is it a particular mill or can anyone be entered? I think I tried a few of them. For some reason it reminds me a bit of ICO.
4) Aless Bradwyn... alternate spelling of a certain Phantasy Star IV protagonist?
