Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Bahaha, haven't read them yet but I love that most of your replies are to my posts. Maybe we should take this conversation to PMs before we drive everyone crazy with our Mega-posts.

I was noticing this as well. Perhaps there should be an auto-quote function set up for you two. Hit 'Reply' and it just grabs every post made in the last 24 hours.

That's because you post the most!

And because I like you. In a completely heterosexual way, of course. OR IS IT!?

Edit: Just my luck that my mega-post would be one of the last of the last page. Would it be bad if I reposted this for top page visibility? I think it may make some people's lives quite easier.

I spent a couple of hours making the closest thing to the ultimate "play GW2 with a controller" pack I could. It includes free, portable versions of every program needed, several configuration files (both of mine plus Hawkian's), detailed instructions, a one-click batch file, even instructions for paranoids like me who don't want to use the .exe files included. I uploaded it too Google Docs, but since I anticipate me updating it with stuff as people tell me mistakes, I've also made a blog post (first one in a yer and a half! :D) that I'll update with the link to the latest version. Here it is:

Edit: Yeah, I read it. I'll definitely reply via PMs, man.

Na, instead we should make it our forum drinking game. Whenever Retro or Weltall does a mega-quoting post, take a shot

Also, I found an updated skill calculator

Probably the best skill calc ive found so far as well

Nice. Curious though, how do you deal with ground-targeting? Thats about the only thing I dislike about using a controller (would never go back to KB/M though). I would love it if we get in-game support and the right analog stick switched to the move green target thing around instead of the camera while you are ground targeting.

If i just left my mouse pointer in the center of the screen it worked out okay since I could basically move it how I wanted by moving the camera. i just found it kinda awkward clicking L3 and then targeting with the left analong and not being able to move

My setup must be different. I use the right analog and move the ground target around. Sometimes it works just fine with the AHK locked for right click, other times I have to trigger that off and then move the right analog stick. Either way, once you get it down, everything is pretty smooth.

There's an Auto-Ground Target option that skips the green circle and immediately tries to cast where your pointer is. If it can't cast there, you'll just get a quick error saying it's out of range and can try again without penalty. Even kb/m users should have this option on. It speeds up your game a ton.

Nice, thanks! I really love how it tells you about boons, conditions and even combos you can perform with a given set of skills.

AOE placement is indeed the weaker point of gamepad control, but with some practice you can get around it reasonably well. What I do is, I leave the pointer kind of up, say above the head of my character. Then when I'm getting ready to place an AOE, I hit the ability button, then use the camera control to put the marker where I want it, and hit the ability button again. For example, to place the marker at your feet, look straight down; to place it far away, look almost straight ahead. It's not the most precise thing (particularly for long ranges and especially when close to the edge of the spell's reach / the marker turns red), nor is it as quick as with a mouse, but it does the trick.

I really gotta experiment with this come retail. Thanks for the reminder!

And I'm off to bed. See ya guys!

Anyone who plans on starting as a Norn at launch and wants to group early on, add "Demolitio2" on Steam or something and we can have some fun in the most beautiful starting area in the game. I love the barbarian feel to them so it's hard not to love them.

KB+M player here but I wish I had known about this.

Well, first of all, and in line with what Hawkian was saying later, the reason I have little time to post today is that I spend a good couple of hours making the closest thing to the ultimate "play GW2 with a controller" pack I could. Yea, thats what i ended up doing, but its real annoying when you forget to put the cursor in the middle of the screen and your ground target is either out of range or on the the side of the screen. Oh well, guess its something that ill have to train myself on

Honestly, I just click the stick and aim it with the "mouse" rather than trying to aim via the camera. Indeed it is a weak point but I barely even notice it anymore- though, I haven't played an AOE-heavy class/style yet, admittedly.

I'm not 100% sure about this anymore; the Sylvari area is friggin' gorgeous. That said, the Norn area is my favorite starting area. In fact, I tend to take all of my characters there to level because I enjoy it so much compared to the other zones. Not sure I'll do that this time, however. I really feel I should explore the others more and really move into the personal story stuff (which I've largely avoided).

Besides, the first character I'm going to play is either going to be a Charr or Asura. Not sure which as of yet. If you end up having trouble finding people to hang with, though, make sure to contact me through PMs on GAF. I'm more likely to see it here than on Steam.

EDIT: Also, that shark is awesome. Is there anything they didn't throw into this damn game?!

Will I need to get rid of the beta client or will it be able to be kept and used for the live game? I know a few mmo's have let you just keep your beta client.

Might want to throw that over at Reddit if you want some Karma haha. Thanks for this though. I'm very interested in trying this out but going back to look for the posts was a pain in the ass. Definitely going to try this out when it releases.

I'm not an AoE user really so the ground targeting won't be a huge problem for me at first. When I start playing new classes then maybe it will but by then hopefully ANET comes through on the controller support.

So I'm watching a recording of a stream in which the person is sitting at a gate into WvW and constantly hitting to enter it... for oh... about an hour. Yes, an hour of him trying to get into WvW. Glad I didn't waste my time trying too hard last weekend.

Good PvE.

Ah. So fun.

I keep wanting to spam this thread with "I NEED TO PLAY THIS GAME RIGHT NOW DON'T CUT OFF MY SUPPLY"

But I hold myself back... whoops!

As someone who loves to explore, the structure of PvE in this game is utterly fantastic.

Tekno, have you gone over your opinion on PvE before? Were you wanting a more traditional WoW style progression or did you have different expectations that weren't met?

Same for me as well. I've always felt completely unimpressed by more traditional methods of questing, and always preferred just exploring the world and seeing what there was to see. Well, this game rewards that through a variety of methods.

Good PvE.

Madness! Guild Wars 2 is a the revolution of MMOs! No longer will we need to fetch quests from NPCs!

Stupid Asuran Quest said:
-New Event: Help out BlahBlahBlah by fixing the robots in the area-
*right clicks a robot* "You should speak to BlahBlahBlah to find out how to fix this robot."
*right clicks a different object in the area* "You should speak to BlahBlahBlah to find out how to deal with this."
I really hate the Asuran starting area.

Just wait till you guys find out about the puzzle in Metrica Province that leads to a champion group boss. With what is involved, it's unlikely that many will see it.

@IPoopStandingUp

Wut, If am thinking about the right quest, not only is the guy who you need to speak to like 10 feet away from those robots (literally outside the little cave they are in) he also turns you into a little robot of your own -complete with 5 different abilities- just to go through that 5 minute quest. If it is about the other powered-down robots around there is always a toolbox next to them that allows you to start them, and they even have like 4 different outcomes (including dif. animations) for the different sequences. I only made an Asura and took him to lvl ~5 and I don't remember it being a problem.

There are tricks to skipping the queue and getting straight in when a spot opens up. You just walk in and out of an Asura gate that leads to WvW. If you can't get into any of the WvW realms just go to the mists and walk in and out of the gate. Ignore the queue popup. If you can get into one of the WvW realms but you want into another, get into the WvW realm you have access to and repeat the above process on the gate of your choice.

I never spent more than 5 minutes attempting to gain access to somewhere. The only time it ever took longer was in BWE1 where I had to do the above to get into the main server for the end of beta event. Sadly they've fixed it in the PvE gates but there is no overflow servers for WvW and it doesn't seem like they have a fix for it.

Does any site have a trait calculator that has been updated for BWE3?

Piecake linked this one: http://www.gw2db.com/skills/calc/elementalist

It looks like it has all the proper BWE3 traits. At least it has the Necro's traits right.

The AOE control issue was something I had trouble with using my mouselook autohotkey script. It's unfortunate that right-click + left-click is mapped to run, and that there's no cursor while holding right mouse button. I settled for toggling it on and off, but I'm thinking when the game comes out that I'll change it to have a key which *stops* holding right mouse button only while held.

I did end up pretty happy with my controls though - with mouselook on by default, and left mouse mapped to 1 while mouselook is on, I felt like it made the combat "feel" a lot nicer.

I didn't go as screenshot-happy this time, but I did take a couple I was happy with. For some reason I didn't seem to end up with any of my characters. Maybe because I didn't want to get too attached. ;)

(And if you like them, I'll be self-promotioney and ask if you could possibly vote for me in the screenshot contest. ;) First, and second.)

The area breaks the flow of stumbling upon events and completing them, or rather, the flow proposed by ANet when introduced. The concept is simple, you find a quest area and you just go to town. There is no need to run and find a specific NPC or go through unecessary hoops. You just find adventure. The human zone is like this, for as much as I played in it (around level 16).

The Asuran zone is the antithesis of this. Pretty sure the first quest event doesn't even have enemies you can kill, it's a right click fest. The one I referred to involved finding a NPC before you can do much in the area, and after he turns you into a right-clicking robot, the progress to fill up the bar is tedious as you're forced to fight mobs as a low-damage dealing robot. You could transform into your normal form and take out the mob quickly, but then to right click on anything else you need to go back to the NPC to turn into a robot. In this instance, ArenaNet managed to mix a quirky quest mechanic with shitty and boring gameplay.

I just can't imagine someone playing that section of the Asuran zone only and thinking "this is the future of MMOs!"

To each their own I guess. I wouldn't even consider it broke the flow of the game for anyone. It took me 2 seconds to find the guy, I thought it was a good compromise having to talk to him instead of being transformed into a little robot just because, and there are many such instances in which you have to do other stuff while transformed and with limited skills (Norn and Sylvari starting areas come to mind) so I guess I just knew what that was about. I also didn't have any problem with the robot's power, but I did that quest with several other people so maybe that's it. I find it more of a welcome change of pace from combat.

The line of thinking you present in your last sentence tho, that is a terrible thing to think about this game. I know a lot of people in GAF throw that around constantly, but if you expect it to be true 100% of the time you will be very disappointed with this game. The game is not ultra revolutionary or whatever, it just makes tedious time consuming shit a lot less tedious and time consuming. That's all.

It's a good thing ANet listens to feedback then isn't it? It's not exactly difficult for them to tweak the damage that robot does so that it doesn't take so long to kill those mobs. When I did that specific Heart I happened to be playing with a friend who had already done it and when the mob popped up he killed it for me very easily. I ended up doing that Heart in about 2 minutes while he told me it took forever for him since he didn't have anyone there to kill the mobs quickly. So it really does sound like they just need to tweak some things for that Heart so it doesn't feel so tedious.

I really dont understand why falling damage traits exist. I mean, who would actually pick them? Seems like a complete waste of a trait
