What are your issues with Sonic?

The second zone in the original, Marble Zone, is almost pure platforming. You can't get any significant momentum over large portions of it. There's a long history of slower platforming segments in Sonic.

...That's because Sonic Team were figuring out the gameplay formula. Sonic 2 and 3 refined the formula and the became much better games as a result.

With that said though, I love Sonic 1 and Colors.

Personally, I'd rather they go back to the Sonic 1 style, with mixed platforming and speed levels. It made the game more challenging and therefore rewarding to play.

Sonic was better when it was actually a platformer.

I was disappointed with Sonic Colors, one of the few if not the only game in recent memory that didn't match my expectations. I played the demo and loved it, with that and positive impressions I thought it would be a great game so I ended up buying it. When it's good, it's great, best Sonic in ages, but it's pretty much half good, half bad as it quickly falls in what has become typical in Sonic: disgusting level design filled with a gajillion unremarkable different paths with very little or nothing going for it. Coupled with bad physics, it quickly turns into a very annoying game. Then a great level comes along and you keep on going, but then it turns to shit again. Couldn't bring myself to finish it. Thankfully it was cheap. Great soundtrack though.

Bought Sonic CD at a discount a while back and my impressions are pretty much the same, minus the great levels part. It's mostly a very annoying game with terrible level design and I can't for the life of me understand the love. The Japanese soundtrack is fantastic by the way.

I want a Big the Cat fishing game. Or maybe he could've been DLC in the reissue of Sega Bass Fishing.

I don't have a problem with Sonic, I just try the new games, realize they're not for me, and then leave it at that. Lots of games aren't for me.

Did you play Sonic Generations 360/PS3/PC?

Yes

Did you enjoy Sonic Generations?

To an extent, I believe the game is the best Sonic Team made game since SA2, but modern Sonic plus some stages are still poorly designed.

Did you play Sonic Colors Wii?

Yes

Did you enjoy Sonic Colors?

Again to an extent, I'd say less so than Generations, just because something felt... off about it.

Personally the best experiences with Sonic I've had in the past decade has all been from Dimps, I love their GBA games, their DS titles, the day stages for Unleashed on Wii and PS2, if a whole game was made out of those stages it would have been easily 9/10, I love Sonic 4 episodes 1 and 2, haters can hate but the level design is much better than any classic Sonic stage made by Sonic Team on Generations, and speaking of Generations, Dimps made Generations on 3DS I feel is far superior to the console version, it lacks both Sonic 2006 and Sonic Heroes, two games fans of Sonic probably wouldn't like to remember nor would it be an accurate celebration for the character, then all modern stages are 2D with modern Sonic mechanics, so it's taking away half the game I disliked in the console version lol then the overall layout was much more functional too so yeah Generations 3DS is probably the most fun I've had with Sonic in a while, I keep going back and doing the challenges and trying to get better scores, when the console game was pretty much 1 and done.

Actually I appreciate that they have tried new things with Sonic and are not just trotting the same thing out there over and over again. It isn't always good, but it does keep me coming back.

i hate what they did to knuckles. before he use to be sonic's rival, had his own SSJ mode, and actually broke rocks. now he's the butt monkey, forgot how to shot web, and digs for emerald fragments.

i actually don't mind his stages in sonic adventure 1 and 2. but his stages could be a whole lot better. they should make his stages a lot more like the super mario 64 levels. just replace the star, with emerald fragments.

and i don't understand why there are so many hedgehogs. sonic was enough. why is there a shadow? and the silver/white looking one? i played almost every sonic game up to adventure 2. then i skipped whatever came out, all the way to generations. which was alright.

I don't think any Sonic game ever has been better than 'alright'. That's my main issue with the series.

The original is still awesome. Sonic CD and Sonic 2 are pretty good too. Really I think it's after the 16-bit era that Sonic went downhill and never recovered.

Just let Sonic go, let it go. I don't see how Sega can't come up with something new or backtrack to another old series and renew, do we really need more Sonic? Is it an importance to mankind that Sega endlessly feeds us Sonic titles?

Let it go.

I wholeheartedly agree and I actually like Sonic. Sega has so many classic franchises(yeah, I know not all of them will not be amazing sellers), yet all they want come out with and give attention to is Sonic nowadays. Yeah, yeah, I know it supposedly sells, but they need to slow down or Sonic could end up hurting Sega due to franchise or IP fatigue. How about some variety Sega?

I'm sadden that Sega ignores a lot of their classic franchises. There were some really good ones.

New Ristar please :(

Not enough Rouge. Can never have enough Bat Tits.

Seriously, I've never really got the issues. Maybe it's because I don't pay attention to them hardcore like other people. The so-so physics are the only honest things I notice now of days but the feel is way different from the classic games though and that's something I've just learned to adjust to.

My issue is that it doesn't play enough like a platformer like the Genesis games did. I wish they would tone the roller coaster stuff WAAAYY down and just make a decent platformer with cool set pieces.

Pretty much this. The Genesis games had some sections where you would just run really fast for a while, but it was still primarily a platformer.

I've been rather unsatisfied with the series for the longest time, but not so much after Generations. Sonic Team is on a good path now.

I'd say my biggest issue with the franchise now is that piss poor excuse for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. They really need to scrap that and make Sonic 5 using an improved model of Classic Sonic in Generations.

It would also be nice if:

-There was more polish in general.
-More content (that doesn't involve random gameplay with Sonic's friends) for a meatier experience.
-A Super Sonic final boss that doesn't suck.

They always seem to screw those up, and Generations was certainly no exception.

My biggest issue with Sonic has been - like Goldenroad said - the conflict is has between speed and exploration/platforming. Whenever I'm flying through a level, while it looks cool, all I can think of is, "Damn, I'm probably missing a ton of items/rings." On the flipside, when I'm going slow and exploring levels, it's like, "I *really* want to be going fast right now." It's weird and kinda hard to explain, but there it is. It was better early on, but as stages got longer and more vertical as well, I just felt overwhelmed by it all.

Completely agreed. I never feel comfortable playing the Genesis Sonic games because of what you described. I always feel like I'm losing something because I took a certain route and there's usually no way of going back to check out the other way. I'm really exploration-minded so this bugs me out a lot. I'm not into "perfect-platforming" at all. Sonic's way of platforming always felt weird to me because of this characteristic.

I have no opinions of 3D Sonic. All I've played was about 40 minutes of Unleashed and thought it was definitely not for me. I do have Colors sitting on my backlog, though. I'll get to it someday. If I like it enough I might also try Generations in the future. I have no interest at all in the games older than Colors.
