what happened to good music? no seriously

Shitty new versions of those bands dominate rock radio. They're just like slow-dance garbage versions. And they're played alongside those same fucking bands you listed, over and over.

It's fucking unbearable. And is it just me or does every fucking song have to do with drinking and strippers?

It's not just the topic of strippers, its like the music is designed to be played exclusively in strip clubs. It's some sort of rash of greasy, trashy, generic butt dude stripper rock.

The op has a valid question

Music on the radio does really suck nowadays

Well especially in NYC

Z100 is pretty much unlistenable now as opposed to 10 years ago

Rap stations are terrible too, almost every song on there these days has that same 2 chainz/Rick Ross beat, and everything ends up sounding alike.

It's a bit of a bummer because part of music is enjoying it with everyone but no one really knows about these indie guys, they are way below the radar.

It became more of an effort to find
This.

I've been out of touch with most of today's mainstream music for years. Slowly becoming more like all the older folks I know who still only listen to the same stuff that they did from back in their day... Now I find most of my music through hearing it in random moments of life, and even then it's often older stuff.

Probably because it is played in clubs and parties.

It's still around. It's just not necessarily popular. I do recommend however that you listen to this album:

Beach House - Bloom

I learned about this album here on GAF a few months ago. Really glad I did... It's like an orgasm in my ears.

I agree that popular music has gone down hill, they have just got better at making it catchier and dancier, not nessasarly better music

I'm happy that after a 6 year break Smash Mouth have a new album coming out, a return to good music IMO.

Smash Mouth - Magic

Bar the bit where some 'featured' guy raps

There is TONS of amazing music out now. Por example...

But the mainstream stuff (In my opinion) has changed, and not for the better. It is depressing how popular some of these acts are (One Direction, Cheryl Cole) when they don't have that much talent.

But hey. Personal Opinion is personal opinion.

The cover used to be my icon. This album is my second favourite of the year. They lose to Heaven by The Walkmen.

In the meanwhile my dad is terrorising my hearing by singing Snow Patrol songs. God help me.

Exactly. The more I think about it all being controlled by the media the more it makes sense. Look at shows like American idol and the voice. They take this talent and grind it up and churn out junk for the same people that watch such shows and eat it right up. Money is made on both ends now.
I think the problem here is that you're focusing way too much on why people like the music today and not actually finding music you like.

Go on Google, and find music that you like, it's really painless. Listen to music you like instead of worrying about what everyone else likes, ultimately it's irrelevant.

The internet created the age of individuality and that in turn reduced mass music to the dustbin. It used to be the case that you could be fit into say five different music groups: what you'd listen would depend on those groups, as information about music only spread from mouth to mouth and through the radio/tv.

Flash forward to the age of the internet: Someone on the other side of the would can recommend you some local band you would never have heard of in the old scenario. That means there is more music as well as a lessened dependency on a group. Or that, since the entire world is now connected, it becomes easier to identify with niche groups. Therefore, good music becomes more and more a cherry picking exercise, where people select specific bands/acts to listen to. you no longer have to listen to a Nirvana cause thats what all the rocking kids are listening to, you just pick a band thats more specifically tailored to you.

For radio and tv however, that means that groups which where formerly non-mainstream but still rather big have become harder to target. People with less enthousiasm for music however (usually the people listening to simplistic pop) are still dependent on such media, so the market focus shifts to them more fully. This in turn makes pop acts more profitable than non-pop acts and a vicious cycle of targeting the masses starts. As a counter wave, you get the cherry pickers, who are often parodied by the hipster image (which I dont think necessarily is a very uniform group).

And to mention some great acts from the last few years (in terms of album releases):

Alt-J
Bon Iver
Chromatics
Gang Gang Dance
The National
M83
Mew
Pepe Deluxe
Purity Ring
Sleigh Bells
Washed Out

I hate that music is not about attitude anymore. Everything is so fucking meta, it's meaningless.

Yup, i know some bands do succeed in doing it well, but for example, that band 'All Time Low' While they have goo intentions with there music videos that mock the industry for what it is, they are really playing along with the whole seen and there music is just as namby pamby as the rest of the people they try to mock

I like this list. It's an example of really good (and relatively popular, definitely not obscure) modern music. I also like:

Fleet Foxes
Waaves
Tune-yards
Toro y moi
Destroyer
Cut copy
St Vincent

I still find incredible music. And in some cases even better music than I ever listened. What I miss is unified movements. Shoegazzers, grunge, madchester, 4AD. Not because of some homogenization of the music but just to make it easier to find similar bands, sounds. It can be the case that they do exist even and I'm only out of touch though.

I discover new bands I like every week, just by going on Youtube or Spotify. And 90% of the music I listen to is japanese but still.
I manage to find 2 or 3 new bands every week, and J-Rock is kind of a niche genre.

We could definitely hang out musically :P

Yup this has been me for about 13 years now. Most of the new music I listen to is when an old band I like puts out a new album. That basically means music just isn't as big a part of my life as it was in the mid 90s but I do ok with it. It's better than listening to 2000s music.

99% of music being played on the radio today is hands down the absolute worst crap humanity could ever produce. You can cry rose tinted specs all you want but at least pop music in previous decades was better than this shit we have today. There is good music out there today you just need to find it for yourself.

Guess I might as well join in and post some amazing music (list should be correct this time):

Kashiwa Daisuke - Stella (Seriously, set aside a half an hour and listen to this. Your life may never be the same.)

Lydia - Hospital (Indie)

Svartalvheim - If the Gods Cannot Stop Me (Symphonic Death Metal)

RQTN - 1955 - A Shelter For Lovers (Instrumental/Post Rock)

Ulver - Dressed in Black (Prog/Experimental)

World's End Girlfriend - 1000 Years of Choke (Instrumental/Modern Classical)

Roberto Cacciapaglia - Times (Modern Classical)

Earth - Old Black (Instrumental/Stoner Rock)

Agalloch - In the Shadow of our Pale Companion (Atmospheric Folk/Dark Metal)

Alcest - Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde (Shoegaze/Sorta Kinda Black Metal but not really)

Stars - The Night Starts Here (Electropop)

The Cinema - The Wolf (Electronic/Indie)

I could literally do this all day, so I'll cut it off there, but check those out. I'm sure you'll find something you like!

Not sure what stations you were listening to in the 90s, but mine were playing Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, and this was on top 40 pop radio. If any of these bands came out new today, they'd never come close to sniffing top 40 or a pop station, and they would be relegated to YouTube or an Internet radio alternative where they would have a small fraction of a fan base. They also wouldn't get any push at all from a record company and wouldn't sell anywhere near the amount of records that they sold in the 90s.

Yeah. Good music on the TOP 40 stations died out somewhere around the mid 90's.

As modern music continued to get worse and worse I dived into classic rock more and more and I'm pretty content. But modern music really does feel like it's lacking.
